The Apple Mac Thread - Online Problem Solving.

Stan - 18 Oct 2006 09:24

I know there is a joint Computer solving thread but the few Apple questions on there do sometimes get missed, so thought that I would set up a dedicated one for the Mac.

...Bye the way I am quite Computer illiterate apart from what I have picked up...so no point In asking me much -):

Ian,

I wonder If you could make this thread available on the Investors side as well please?

IanT(MoneyAM) - 18 Oct 2006 10:02 - 2 of 138

Stan,

No problem - the trhead is now available on both traders and investors rooms.

Bolshi - 18 Oct 2006 10:10 - 3 of 138

Hey Stan. Don't you get answers to your problems? Eminem had that too:

"Dear Slim, I wrote but you still ain't callin
I left my cell, my pager, and my home phone at the bottom
I sent two letters back in autumn, you must not-a got him
There probably was a problem at the post office or something
Sometimes I scribble addresses too sloppy when I jot him
but anyways; f**k it, what's been up? Man how's your daughter?"

You probably need to be an Eminem fan to get it. :-)

Good luck with your thread.

Stan - 18 Oct 2006 10:23 - 4 of 138

Thanks Ian and Bolshi,

As a coincidence on R4. this morning In the Mid Week programme the fella who Invented the Apple computer said that before he invented the Mac.....computers did not even have a keyboard!

MightyMicro - 18 Oct 2006 11:29 - 5 of 138

Stan:

*old geek warning*

That was Steve Wozniak, who built the original Apple, but not the Mac. There is an Apple Mk 1 still on display in Fry's Electronics in Sunnyvale, California. I've got a picture of it somewhere which I'll try to find. He worked at Hewlett-Packard in Palo Alto at the time, and offered his computer to HP. They weren't interested. It was pretty Heath Robinson, but the Apple II was something of a masterpiece for its time.

*/old geek warning*

PS: I saw Woz a few years back pushing a shopping cart around Fry's Palo Alto -- he was buying a load of Mac software.

Stan - 18 Oct 2006 12:01 - 6 of 138

Interesting that MM,

I liked the way that he championed the little consumer.

take your pick;

google search

Stan - 26 Nov 2007 09:12 - 11 of 138

Thanks R,

Can anyone recommend any of those retailers in that Google search please? or think any are not worth dealing with.?

Kyoto - 26 Nov 2007 12:20 - 12 of 138

Stan - I'm not sure I've ever dealt with them but Scan and More Computers are supposed to have reasonable reputations. I don't think I've heard of any of the rest in the search results. In the Google Ads on the right, I don't know if any of the WD HD's at Amazon are the exact model you're looking for, but I have dealt with Dabs and Microdirect and they have been OK.

Stan - 26 Nov 2007 12:22 - 13 of 138

Thanks K, will have a look after lunch.

robber - 26 Nov 2007 15:05 - 14 of 138

OK will do, just wasted 15 minutes having a useless few words with someone online at Dabs. I will continue to look.

anyone having problems with moneyam site since installing Leopard, I have 2 macs and they both are now unable to view pages from the monitor links, i.e. graphs, trades, etc. emailed support whom say they are yet to test the leopard OS with the site !!

IanT(MoneyAM) - 04 Dec 2007 07:07 - 19 of 138

barretec,

all the things which you are having trouble opening work as a pop up - I am wondering whether a pop up blocker on your system is causing this problem. You may want to make sure pop up blockers are turned off and try again to see if that helps,

Ian

Jonathan - 04 Dec 2007 07:55 - 20 of 138

barretec,

I get exactly the same problem with Safari.

I'll investigate and see what I can find.

I would think intel-mac will be more at risk then the former G4 and G5 macs. You can see from the number of people wanting to hack intel-mac tiger installers for installation for windows computers.

barretec - 10 Dec 2007 19:54 - 26 of 138

well, it's been 10 days since Jonathan identified the problem that mac users are experiencing while loading links from their stockwatch. MoneyAM, could you please put this on your todo list and resolve this issue. thanks

I would think intel-mac will be more at risk then the former G4 and G5 macs. You can see from the number of people wanting to hack intel-mac tiger installers for installation for windows computers.

The underlying CPU architecture (Intel vs. PowerPC) isn't likely to make any significant difference to the vulnerability of the Mac -- viruses and so on are purely software problems.

Anyone know if these are legit?

Stan - 03 Aug 2008 11:29 - 38 of 138

I have sleep set to go to sleep after 3 minutes but just recently when I return the machine is switched off.

Any ideas what is causing this please?

Quicksilver 733 OS 10.3.9. and this has never happened before.

Jonathan - 03 Aug 2008 15:39 - 39 of 138

Is the screen set to blank after a minute or so? That could kick in before the sleep hits...

Stan - 03 Aug 2008 20:26 - 40 of 138

I had to change my CDROM this morning and I tweaked the battery at the same time, it seems to sleep now..so fingers crossed.

Thanks anyway Jonathan.

Stan - 08 Aug 2008 16:44 - 41 of 138

Anyone else running Panther having the problems that I have been having recently on here? see the "Enhancements" thread for background.

kimoldfield - 08 Aug 2008 16:49 - 42 of 138

Stan, I am running the now relatively 'old' OS 10.4 Tiger and I have to say it is a vast improvement on Panther and none of my hardware was affected by the upgrade. I will be upgrading to Leopard in the near future, when time permits.

kimoldfield - 08 Aug 2008 16:51 - 43 of 138

Incidentally, I use safari as my browser for MAM, it is normally very stable.

Spaceman - 08 Aug 2008 16:53 - 44 of 138

Kim, i have found that the latest version of Safari with Leopard is ver UNstable, so much so that i have stopped using it, I use Firefox all the time now.

Stan - 08 Aug 2008 16:53 - 45 of 138

Thanks Kim, just seems an awful lot of money to pay for a malfunction on just "one" site, this one.

kimoldfield - 08 Aug 2008 17:00 - 46 of 138

Spaceman, maybe I'll hold off updating to Leopard a while longer!!

I understand how you feel Stan! Tiger is a much smoother OS than anything previously and I guess Panther is better again, except where Safari is concerned; that right Spaceman?!

Stan - 08 Aug 2008 17:24 - 47 of 138

Anyone else running Panther having the problems that I have been having recently on here? see the "Enhancements" thread for background.

Think I'll just try to keep this post at the top for the Weekend to see if there are any other Panther users out there.

kimoldfield - 08 Aug 2008 18:08 - 48 of 138

I can hear the spooky music and see the cobwebs already Stan! ;o)

Jonathan - 08 Aug 2008 19:41 - 49 of 138

For what it's worth (considering I've maid my views clear on the other thread), I'm running 10.5.4 on two machines, and MoneyAM works perfectly. I also run 10.4.11 on another machine, and MoneyAM functions well. I'm using Firefox 3.0.1 on the 10.5 machines and 2.0.0.XX (where XX is a high number) on the 10.4 machine.

I don't tend to use safari as I have a number of extensions I like to run which aren't compatible, so I can't give my view on that really.

HTH,
Jonathan.

porky - 09 Aug 2008 11:28 - 50 of 138

By far the best browser I find is the Omnigroup Browser which you initially have to pay for, but is worth every penny. What I find is the fact that websites render differently, but with the Omnigroup browser you can optimize individual web sites to suit your requirements and the computer remembers each site when you return to them.

Stan - 09 Aug 2008 13:48 - 51 of 138

Sounds interesting Porky, wonder if paying for that new browser will solve the problem I am having with MAM. Are you by any chance using it with Panther?

Ed: Googled it and just get a "can't find the server box" for www.Omnigroup.com ..bit strange I'll have another go later (I did it in Firefox and Safari).

Jonathan - 09 Aug 2008 15:13 - 52 of 138

Stan,

Paying to upgrade your OS would be a better idea than paying for a browser in today's world where FF and Opera are free :)

Omnigroup's website is down for me too, fyi

Jonathan.

Jonathan - 09 Aug 2008 17:17 - 53 of 138

Omnigroup's website is back up again

Jonathan.

Stan - 09 Aug 2008 21:52 - 54 of 138

John,

As a matter of interest, if I did upgrade from Panther to Leopard would I have to buy Tiger and Leopard or how does it work when your 2 systems behind?

Spaceman - 10 Aug 2008 01:21 - 55 of 138

Stan, pretty sure you just but the latest, not related old version.

Jonathan - 10 Aug 2008 09:32 - 56 of 138

Stan,

You can just buy the latest. However, I would compare the required specs for Leopard against your machine before forking out for it. I know it's a little more particular than Tiger was (My G4 laptop can't be upgraded, for instance)...

Jonathan.

Stan - 10 Aug 2008 22:16 - 57 of 138

Thanks Spaceman and Jonathan.

For Porky: "Sounds interesting Porky, wonder if paying for that new browser will solve the problem I am having with MAM. Are you by any chance using it with Panther?"

Stan - 18 Aug 2008 15:55 - 58 of 138

Update:

Stockwatch been working fine on Safari and also been working on Firefox for the last couple of times I've dared to use it, have you tweaked something chaps -):?

I posted this on the PC thread but issue not resolved yet:

We inherited a PC system with a bigger (then I use on my Mac) Monitor over the W/E.

Question is will the PC Monitor work with my Mac processor and vice verser?

The monitor is a Gatway VX900. 18inch (measuring corner to corner). to many Ref. Nos. on the back to quote. I did notice that the lead from the PC monitor has a 15 holed pin coming out while my present Mac monitor lead comes straight out. My guess is it won't work but I don't know. Seem to think that this question has been answered on here but to many posts to go back on to find.

If not can I get 2 new cables that reflect the different connections?

I don't want to start disconnecting and plugging things in just in case the electrics don't like it.

MightyMicro - 18 Aug 2008 16:24 - 59 of 138

Stan:

Your Gateway monitor (especially if it's a CRT) is almost certainly VGA analogue and your Mac will be DVI (digital). What you will need is a DVI/VGA (digital to analogue) converter dongle to stick on the end of the Gateway monitor lead.

Stan - 18 Aug 2008 16:41 - 60 of 138

It is a CRT monitor MM, I will have a look on the Maplin site to see if they do them.

Thanks very much.

Stan - 18 Aug 2008 16:51 - 61 of 138

Is that right that i won't be able to use the old Mac monitor for the new PC unit? ie digital monitor to PC with a new lead.

Stan - 19 Aug 2008 17:52 - 62 of 138

Man at Maplin says I don't need anything, just swap over which I've done and it works..Bingo!

Stan - 11 Sep 2008 15:00 - 63 of 138

Been using the Camino browser for the last couple of weeks and find it faster then Firefox..and that's saying something. They claim that it's made for the Mac and I can see why. Also I can get Stopwatch on it to work as well as on Safari (using Panther10.3.9)..but with general surfing faster.

Stan - 19 Nov 2008 15:44 - 64 of 138

Any one used this one? http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ sounds handy for beating the BBC's 7 day rule.

Stan - 08 Nov 2009 22:06 - 66 of 138

Just wonder if anyone is camera savvy and can help me on this please?

I want to take my first step into Digital Photography by purchasing (second hand) one from the Ixus or PowerShot range.

I have been looking at the Ixus 80 (145 new) and the PowerShot A470 (70 new), and was hoping to pick either up for a lot less on Ebay.

Trouble is neither are Mac compatible in their specs.

So my question is do any of Cannon's early Digital cameras come Mac compatible.?

I've been on the Cannon website but of course they just want to sell their new stuff, I've also done some searches but not come up with any helpful sites.

Any helpful advice or website references would be much appreciated.

Thank you.

kimoldfield - 09 Nov 2009 00:56 - 67 of 138

Stan, which Mac have you got and which OS? If your computer has an SD card reader slot, the Image Capture programme or the iPhoto app should automatically pick it up. Alternatively you could buy a card reader to plug into a spare USB port. I can recommend the SanDisk MicroMate whih is very compact and you can quite often get it free with a new SD card.

Image readers are available from Canon at:-
http://software.canon-europe.com/products/0010567.asp

You should be able to use the inbuilt Mac Image Capture though, I use a variety of cameras one of which is a Canon Powershot SX20IS. All are accepted by my Macs (iMac & MacBook Pro OS 10.6.1) without a problem. I recommend that you format the SD card in your camera before using it.

Good luck; once you get started you won't look back!!

Stan - 09 Nov 2009 21:30 - 68 of 138

Thanks for all the info Kim,

I'm using a Mac Mini running on OS 10.5.8.

Just bought a PowerShot A470 on Ebay and await it's delivery.

Once again thanks for the insight.

kimoldfield - 09 Nov 2009 23:22 - 69 of 138

That's neat Stan! Image Capture should be in your Applications folder, so you should not have any problems there.

Stan - 10 Nov 2009 07:50 - 70 of 138

Oh good, It has to be logical and simple in operation for me, as I'm no camera buff -):

Stan - 26 Sep 2010 21:28 - 71 of 138

Not that we can't do the things that this clean-up piece of software provides, but it just keeps it in one place and will serve as a reminder (to me) to do some regular cleaning and not wait until the thing starts to get slower and slower.

Question is, are they a genuine outfit, and has anyone installed and run it please?

I'm attempting to download the "Firefox Software Update" for Browser31, I then get a box saying "connecting to update server" and looks like its streaming but has been doing so for about an hour.

Question is? Is that usual that it takes so long or has it frozen.

I restarted the computer and am currently doing the same thing again.. with no difference.

KidA - 01 Aug 2014 14:09 - 77 of 138

I'm on OSX 10.6.8 and did a Firefox update the other day - About Firefox shows 31.0, it took less than 5 minutes.

fwiw - I've just prepared a mac book for passing onwards - after reformatting the OS download was mojave. No problems here at all.
PS - followed the instructions on deleting/new set up but had a moment when the macbook threw up error messages. The one instruction missing is that you must connect via ethernet to your router as you've just deleted your wireless connection - obvious when I stopped to think but I might save someone an anxious moment.

After a lot of trial and error and a long online chat with Apple Support, then a phone call with them, I wiped my hard drive and restored from my Time Capsule, without which I would have been stuffed! My Photo album with over 12,000 photos and 478 videos was lost but I was able to create a new library via iCloud. Everything is back to what it was and I am going to attempt to download Mojave again. Apple Support assure me that all will be fine, if not I know what to do to get back to where I am now! I will leave it to install overnight and hope that there isn't a mess to clean up in the morning. A bit like having a real dog!πŸ˜€

Stan - 19 Oct 2018 07:33 - 103 of 138

Sounds a nightmare Kim always the same isn’t it with some of these changes, oh well getting there bit by bit...good luck.

I’ve now got the update message on the iPad but will also wait and see with that as well.

kimoldfield - 19 Oct 2018 08:27 - 104 of 138

Grrr! Same thing has happened, so I will not attempt to download Mojave again! I'd wait a bit before you try Stan!

Stan - 19 Oct 2018 08:35 - 105 of 138

Yet again sounds like they release these updates without properly testing them out in the real world.

kimoldfield - 19 Oct 2018 09:22 - 106 of 138

Looks that way Stan!

kernow - 19 Oct 2018 09:50 - 107 of 138

Kim. Since you are now happy to restore data why not try the reformat hd, let the machine install mojave automatically and then reinstall your data. A complicated work around for what should be a straightforward task but at least it’s no longer lurking.

kimoldfield - 19 Oct 2018 11:32 - 108 of 138

Hi kernow, thanks, I have considered that and may well give it a go over the weekend with a large whisky by my side!πŸ˜€

skinny - 19 Oct 2018 12:11 - 109 of 138

Buy a PC :-)

kimoldfield - 19 Oct 2018 12:42 - 110 of 138

I've got one skinny. Laptop Sony Vaio. It's cr*p!πŸ˜€

skinny - 19 Oct 2018 12:51 - 111 of 138

Buy a proper one :-)

ExecLine - 19 Oct 2018 14:09 - 112 of 138

My Sony Vaio laptop is now quite a few years old and is excellent. Bought it 'used' too.

First thing I did was clear out all the very unhelpful Sony user software which came with the machine. I built my PC myself about two years ago. It's quite hi-spec. Both machines run on W10.

The software on both machines is kept slap bang up to date with 'PatchMyPC'.
The drivers on both machines are kept up to date with 'DriverBooster 6'.
I clear junk out periodically with 'CCleaner'.
BT help me as a user with their 'BT Virus Protect'.
Any difficult Malware, Adware, PUPs or Spyware is cleared out using 'Malwarebytes AdwCleaner'.

I could never get along with Apple Macs. To me, they don't even seem to start up or shut down properly, IMHO.

kimoldfield - 19 Oct 2018 15:30 - 113 of 138

Each to their own I suppose! I always thought PCs were the best until my brother and his wife ganged up on me and persuaded me to try theirs; I have never looked back! I bought the Sony for my youngest daughter for coursework, it is alien to me after using various Mac computers over the years. This is the first time I have had a problem with a Mac!

Dindinho - 24 Oct 2018 08:36 - 114 of 138

After being prompted by Apple, again, I downloaded Mojave to my MacBook Pro last night. So far it is working flawlessly and it does seem to have a lot of nice new features. I just need to find time to test them.

kimoldfield - 24 Oct 2018 23:26 - 115 of 138

Glad you didn't have any problems Dindinho, I still haven't sorted mine!

Stan - 24 Oct 2018 23:40 - 116 of 138

What a bummer Kim, am I right in thinking you also have an iPad? If so have you downloaded Mojave on that?

kimoldfield - 25 Oct 2018 07:30 - 117 of 138

It is a very old iPad Stan, so Mojave not available. Just as well!πŸ˜€

kimoldfield - 26 Oct 2018 00:21 - 118 of 138

Managed to get my MacBook to work normally again but I will not retry Mojave just yet!

iturama - 26 Oct 2018 08:07 - 119 of 138

Mine is a 13" retina, early 2015, Kim and Mojave installed without a hitch from High Sierra.

kimoldfield - 29 Oct 2018 09:41 - 120 of 138

Iturama, I have a 15" 2016 running High Sierra, version 10.13.6. I haven't tried resetting SMC yet, may do in a couple of weeks, that may make a difference. There are a lot of grumpy MacBook Pro users out there!πŸ˜ƒ

Stan - 29 Oct 2018 09:56 - 121 of 138

Kim, I popped into my Apple store last week and there's been no problems in my area at all, temped to download Mojave but still hesitating on the basis that "he who dares can come a cropper". -):

kimoldfield - 29 Oct 2018 10:40 - 122 of 138

Well so long as you have everything backed up before you try! iCloud backup would not have been sufficient to restore my computer, thankful I had a time capsule!

Stan - 29 Oct 2018 11:50 - 123 of 138

I don't/won't use the so called cloud until I'm forced to and in no rush at the moment as other things on, time capsule sounds the back-up to use as you say when I do update the OS.

Stan - 12 Nov 2018 08:47 - 124 of 138

Any benefits for us share shifters in using Mojave at all would you say or not, if there are what are they?

kimoldfield - 12 Nov 2018 11:44 - 125 of 138

It might be an improvement Stan and look nice but I cannot see any real advantage as such; there is a Stock App now but I shouldn't think it is any different to the one on my iPhone other than it will be on a bigger screen!

Stan - 13 Nov 2018 00:31 - 126 of 138

Thanks Kim I've more time this week so intend to bite the bullet and download on the Desk Top and iPad, at least we will be up to date which is something I used not to do until I had to.

kimoldfield - 13 Nov 2018 07:21 - 127 of 138

Good luck Stan, I'm sure it will be fine!

iturama - 13 Nov 2018 08:19 - 128 of 138

Never mind Stan, if you mess it up you can make an informed decision later.

Stan - 14 Nov 2018 00:10 - 129 of 138

Both devices installed and up and working Kim so much relieved 😎

kimoldfield - 14 Nov 2018 07:20 - 130 of 138

Very good Stan! Is there a big difference?

Stan - 14 Nov 2018 08:07 - 131 of 138

Fine so far Kim I will update later in the day...but so far so good.

Stan - 15 Nov 2018 15:42 - 132 of 138

I think this sites a bit quicker and might be even quicker if I remove the browser cookies, I've only removed the cookies for this site so far.

kimoldfield - 15 Nov 2018 16:07 - 133 of 138

Well I'm glad you are still bug free Stan!😊

iturama - 15 Nov 2018 16:16 - 134 of 138

You haven't seen his house Kim.

Stan - 15 Nov 2018 16:25 - 135 of 138

Well I should be Kim I've just had my 3 monthly shower... weather I needed it or not πŸ˜‡

iturama - 15 Nov 2018 16:32 - 136 of 138

Whether the weather warranted it or not Stan. No wonder Hays has had enough.

Looking for some advice here. I’m getting e mails from my own address (imap account) or more specifically mail delivery system failure e mail from my domain name hosting service as it has correctly failed the e mail as spam and returned it to me! The failed e mails include correct but out of date passwords I’ve used and claim a trojan can access my contacts etc and web cam and demands for bitcoin ransom.
My hosting provider says nothing to worry about giving the usual advice re passwords, opening attachments, using multiple addresses for different purposes etc.
Anyone experienced the same or similar? Do I need virus/malware software (mac/ipad and iphone).
TIA
