Tim Besley, one of the two arch hawks on the Bank of Englands rate-setting Monetary Policy Committee (MPC), sounded a warning yesterday about the impact of the credit squeeze on consumer demand, suggesting that he would not be an obstacle to rate cuts if conditions deteriorated.

In Asia today, the Nikkei closed up 122.51 points at 13,757.91, while the Hang
Seng ended the morning ahead 517.11 points at 24,276.36.

New York's main oil contract, light sweet crude for delivery in March, rose 65 cents
to $96.15 a barrel in electronic deals on the New York Mercantile Exchange.
