G,
How lovely to see someone starting a 'Say something positive' thread.
Most of my threads have been on the theme that the end of the world is
not nye - even if it is for our pretty stupid bankers.
I find the Bullish Percentage chart quite indicative. It compares those
shares with point and figure buys and those with sell signals across the
whole of the S&P 500. Sadly it is not yet showing much in the green shoot scenario.
But I'll post it below and maybe again a few days later if anyone is interested.

Stan - I'm sure mouchel is a super stock for you.
However - it's not quite right for this thread because it doesn't fit the first qualifier (higher high and higher low). I also doubt it will meet the second qualifier - the 50 day moving average should be below the current price, and the red line should currently be sloping upwards.

Tabby - now you're getting it. These are shares that look like sensible LONGs - the DCB warning at the beginning of the thread is merely that - a warning not to be too exhuberant just yet - all of these prospective longs could easily fail if we have another awful day or week on the FTSE. But, chartwise, they look better longs than, say, sticking a pin in a list or taking a tip off a bloke down the pub.
BVIC was a good buy - nice one. Proof that even the village idiot gets lucky every now and then.
If you'd sold all of your MDX shares back then and bought more BVIC (or reduced risk by spreading the cash around a few from this thread instead) then you'd be a few 10s of thousands of pounds better off. But no - instead you chose to increase your MDX exposure and consequent losses, and forego the opportunity profits of the capital you've tied up and wasted in a company very likely to go bust.

Goldie - I agree it looks like AGK might be bottoming out - but on this thread we're really looking for shares that have emphatically broken any recent downtrend, and look like a new uptrend is underway. I know I've included some shares (eg PRU, BGC) that arguably don't meet the stated qualifiers - but I accept that this isn't an exact science, and I dont want to start putting other factors such as RSI divergence into the list of qualifying features - it would cause too much confusion, and one of the things I'm trying to do with this thread is to keep it simple.
From the chart above, AGK would need to break 515ish to fit the bill. At that level there would be a new higher high, the price would be trading above the 50 day EMA, and I expect the EMA would be rising. So if you're long and if AGK qualifies in the next few weeks, you'll have had the first 85p and also therefore the last laugh at my not including it for the time being.

personally, i am very happy that my portfolio overall is probably short, and certainly is if i strip out IEC ..... though ther markets always look 6/12 months forward, i think there is so much bad news in the offing, that it cannot conceivably all have been discounted ...... for instance, even if US car makers get bailed out, as will almost certainly happen, it will be at the cost of huge cuts in their workforce (unions are too strong, but that is another story) and no doubt their suppliers will be told they will only get paid at say 120 days ...... uk unemployment is still rising sharply, and euroland bureaucrats still refuse to own up to the total shit their own empire is in.

common sense suggests yes, they are " banking" on a sudden increase in interest rates to head off inflation in a year or so.
But for investors there may well be opportunities in buying gold miners if you can identify actual producers with mines in countrys with low political risk/interference. Unfortunately it seems to us most producing goldmines are located in countrys which are politically high risk.

"Speaking as an exporter, I have to say that it is a myth that devaluing our currency makes our goods cheaper. It's the bottom line that benefits."
I heard the same about people exporting to Europe. They don't change their sales price, they just take more, or less, profit.
A bit like dropping VAT by 2.5%. Most small shops have kept the same sales price and are pocketing the grant from our wondrous Government.

Why given away an increase in bottom line profit? Because at lower prices you get more business and make more profit overall (or in these tough times hang on to business that you might otherwise lose). I agree doesn't work for all businesses but make sense overall for enough business that does increase exports. That said of course there is a time lag for these things to work through and will only make a difference if sterling stays weak for an extended period.

As of now eleven of the green shoots have rotted and seven still survive.
That's in the top (green) section.
And four out of the six maybes are gonners.
Now you know me (TP). I'm usually the prophet of hope around here - but I can't add much cheer offhand.
I guess the lesson is that a 50 day MAV is too short for the present climate. I'm a point and figure man myself. I'll see if I can come up with something - but no promises.
But thanks, all the same, Gausie for giving us a few weeks of hope. Every little counts!

According to Baroness Vadera, Minister for Business (picture of foxy chick Minister below to brighten up this thread)
"I am seeing a few green shoots but it's a little bit too early to say exactly how they'd grow."
Going on to mix herself a large metaphor, she said: "Is this a positive straw in the wind, or should we say one swallow does not make a summer? It's too early to say."

30th October since the last post! Our green shoots have got a bit lost under the snow.
Maybe a bit OT, or maybe a bit relevant. Anyway it's a quiet weekend for messages other than the gurus trying to reactive another guru's loudspeakers on the PC thread.
It is a long time since anyone tried to sell us anything by phone - other than those tiresome recordings that we have won a holiday in the Carribean. But two calls in two days.
At around 5.00 pm on Friday we had a call from the owner of a hotel in Switzerland where we stayed in March 2008. We'd had a great time but had not been back since. He was phoning to see how we were and to say that he hoped he might see us again this year.
Yes, we get quite a few emails from hotels we have stayed at over the last few years - but a phone call? Never before and it certainly tempts us to go back.
And on Saturday my wife got a call from Selfidges where she occasionally buys a particular brand of skin product. The call was to tell her that some new products were coming in shortly and to offer her a free one hour makeover. Gosh. I cannot remember how long it was since I had a call from a shop to tell me they were getting some stock of something I buy albeit infrequently.
Is 2010 heralding an age of enterprise and salesmanship that went out of fashion in the years before our credit crunched?
How nice if it was.

Sir John Major: 'green shoots' of economic recovery are on the way as 'darkest moment' passed
The former prime minister said it would be unwise for a serving minister to tempt fate by announcing the end of the downturn, but that various signs, including the recent fall in unemployment and a rising stock exchange, suggested that the worst was over.
He defended George Osborne, the Chancellor, who he admitted was unpopular with voters, saying this was not surprising given the tough measures which the Government had been forced to take after the last, Labour government left the no money to spare.
During Sir John's premiership, Lord Lamont, who was then the chancellor of the exchequer, was ridiculed when he foresaw the "green shoots of recover" at a time when most of the country was still hurting from the recession which followed Britain's withdrawal from the European Exchange Rate Mechanism 20 years ago today.
Sir John told the BBC's Andrew Marr show: "Since I'm no longer in politics, I can say something that perhaps as a politician I wouldn't.
"Norman Lamont was taken to pieces by commentators for suggesting there were green shoots, but in retrospect, we can see that Norman was right. Recovery begins from the darkest moment.
