Strauss-Kahn Held In Jail After Bail Denied

11:13am UK, Tuesday May 17, 2011

Dominique Strauss-Kahn is being held at the notorious Rikers prison in New York after being denied bail.

The head of the International Monetary Fund is in a cramped 11ft-by-13ft cell - less than a week after staying in a $3,000-a-day hotel suite.

Instead of his marble bathroom, a king-sized bed and feather and down duvet from the Sofitel near Times Square, he has only the most basic supplies.

On arrival at the prison the economist was given rudimentary bedding, a drinking cup, soap, shampoo and toothpaste.

He was also physically and psychologically examined before being separated from other inmates in case he is attacked.

Dominique Strauss-Kahn at Manhattan Criminal Court

Mr Strauss-Kahn, 62, has been accused of sexual assaulting a hotel maid at the Sofitel on Saturday when she arrived to clean his room.

He allegedly emerged from his bathroom naked, dragged the maid from the corridor and then attacked her.

The economist was located by police after he rang the hotel to say he had left behind his mobile phone and told staff he was at JFK Airport.

He was removed from a flight by two officers minutes before it was due to take off and returned to the city.

Mr Strauss-Kahn in court as the prosecutors outline the allegations

His legal team insist he is innocent of the charges which include attempted rape, sexual abuse and unlawful imprisonment.

They proposed a $1m bail and said he could wear an electronic tag.

But Judge Melissa Jackson, at Manhattan Criminal Court, denied bail - claiming there was a risk he might flee back to France.

She said: "When I hear your client was at JFK airport about to board a flight, that raises some concerns."

The 32-year-old hotel maid, an African immigrant, claims Mr Strauss-Kahn dragged her from the hall into a bathroom, where she was made to perform oral sex on him.

She says she managed to free herself when the IMF chief started to remove her underwear and she then ran downstairs to raise the alarm.

Assistant district attorney John McConnell told the court: "The defendant restrained a hotel employee against her will.

"He sexually assaulted her and tried to rape her. When he was unsuccessful, he forced her to perform oral sex on him."

Mr McConnell said the alleged victim, who picked the IMF boss out of a police line-up, had given a "powerful account".

He added: "The crime scene unit has processed the hotel room. Preliminary evidence suggests there are findings that will support the victims version of events."

Unless the man is completely mad--in which case why is he in the powerful position he holds? this smells of a set up to me. The fate of debt ridden EU countries in his hands and strongly touted as the next President of France----hmmm! He's finished now whatever the outcome.

Mr. Strauss-Kahn may also face further scrutiny related to his alleged assault on a young novelist named Tristane Banon. Ms. Banon said in a television interview in 2007 that she had been sexually attacked during an interview she conducted five years earlier with Mr. Strauss-Kahn, whose name was beeped out in the broadcast. He was acting like a rutting chimpanzee, she said then.

On Monday, Ms. Banon said that she would be pressing a criminal complaint against the IMF chief. She offered a terse announcement on her Twitter account: I will speak shortly to the media. For now, a complaint has been lodged at the police headquarters of the 11th [arrondissement of Paris].

After the hearing, the 62-year-old was first taken to the rough New York detention centre known as The Tombs and then to the Rikers Island complex of jails.

Rikers is a maze of 10 jails on a 400-acre island on the East River near LaGuardia airport between Queens and the Bronx.

The site was originally owned by a Danish settler but when he sold it to the state, it became a penitentiary.

It holds about 11,000 inmates, employs 10,000 officers and costs the New York tax payer $860m a year to run.

Gerald Lefcourt, a defence lawyer, said: "It's crowded and the food is terrible. And one of the dangerous things is famous people are preyed upon.

"There are really heavy-duty prison bars and gates that make a lot of clanging sounds every time they are opened and closed."

Mr Strauss-Kahn is being held in the West Facility, which is the smallest of the 10 jails in the complex and designed for inmates with communicable diseases.

Although he is healthy, the design allows him to be separated from inmates who might try to attack him.

He is one of between 25 and 30 inmates in the jail and will be totally isolated from the other prisoners - even when he is allowed out of his cell to exercise or watch TV.

Dominique Strauss-Kahn is being held in protective custody

The economist is allowed one hour a day to exercise and can have three visitors a week as well as his lawyer.

Inmates are woken at 6am and lights go out at 11pm.

On arrival, the IMF boss was given bedding and a toiletry kit containing a drinking cup, soap, shampoo and toothpaste.

Like any other new inmate, he was also given a psychological and physical exam when guards look for tattoos or other signs of gang affiliation.

Jail officials then assign a score to determine the inmate's security risk.

It is thought Mr Strauss-Kahn will be able to wear his own clothes with jail-issued slippers. He will be able to read his own books and a daily newspaper.

Rikers is said to be hated because of its vast size and the uncertain future many inmates face while they are on remand.

Hope he got his KY gel

IMF Chief's Sex Attack 'Victim' In Hiding

The hotel maid at the centre of sex attack allegations against IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn is in hiding and feels "very threatened", her lawyer has said.

The 32-year-old is a widow with a teenage daughter and was unaware of Strauss-Kahn's identity until after the alleged incident at a hotel in New York, Jeffrey Shapiro said.

He added any suggestion his client was involved in a conspiracy to frame him was "ridiculous".

The head of the International Monetary Fund, who is facing growing pressure to quit, has reportedly been placed on suicide watch at New York's notorious Rikers Island prison.

Guards are said to be regularly checking on the 62-year-old, but he is not believed to have attempted to harm himself.

Jeffrey Shapiro, victim's lawyer, denies 'conspiracy'

It is claimed he attacked and attempted to rape the maid, from the West African nation of Guinea, at the city's Sofitel hotel on May 14 when she entered his suite.

Mr Shapiro said: "She didn't have any idea who he was or have any prior dealings with this guy."

He said that after the woman "escaped from the room she reported it to security, the New York City police were called, they interviewed her, they investigated the scene".

He added: "She's been the victim of a rape and physical assault, she hasn't had a chance to deal with that personally.

"She wants to remain anonymous because she's very much afraid that something could happen to her physically, she feels very threatened by this."

As well as pressure in his professional life, Strauss-Kahn's private life also appears to be unravelling.

Tristane Banon, a writer and daughter of a Socialist politician, has said she is talking to her lawyers about an alleged attempted rape in 2002.

The 31-year-old goddaughter of Strauss-Kahn's second wife Brigitte Guillemette claimed she was lured to a Paris studio flat by him on the premise of an interview.

IMF Chief Charged

She claims things turned nasty, with Strauss-Kahn at first insisting on holding her hand, but eventually trying to rip her clothes off.

In an interview in 2007, Ms Banon described Strauss-Kahn as acting like a "rutting chimpanzee" - but his name was bleeped out when it was broadcast.

The only reason she did not press charges at the time, her mother Anne Mansouret claimed, is because she did not want to ruin her fledgling career.

Socialist politican Aurelie Filippetti says Strauss-Kahn tried to chat her up

In other revelations, socialist politician Aurelie Filippetti has claimed Strauss-Kahn made a "very heavy, very insistent" attempt to chat her up in 2008, while playwright Yasmina Reza has also been romantically linked to him.

Spanish writer Carmen Llera also appeared to allude to a relationship with him in two of her books.

Strauss-Kahn's lawyers have denied the charges of a criminal sexual act, attempted rape, sexual abuse, unlawful imprisonment and forcible touching. He faces up to 25 years in prison if convicted.

He was denied bail at a hearing on Monday and is due to reappear in court Friday.

As the head of a UNited nations committe he has diplomatic immunity everywhere in the world (including France) whether on duty or not. It is not his being head of the IMF that gives him diplomatic immunity, but his being head of part of the UN.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-13412092

Diplomats have had immunity from prosecution in their host country for centuries - meaning they cannot be arrested or prosecuted for any offences they commit, from minor parking violations to serious crimes of violence.

This immunity, spelt out in the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, applies both when they are carrying out their official duties, and when they are off-duty.

As the head of one of the UN's specialised agencies, the IMF managing director is just as immune from prosecution as any diplomat, says Jovan Kurbalija, director of DiploFoundation, a Geneva-based organisation researching the role of diplomacy in the modern age.

Furthermore, unlike a diplomat - who is immune from prosecution only in the country where he or she is based - the head of a UN agency is immune from prosecution in all countries.

There is a big difference between the head of the IMF, and its rank-and-file members, who are immune from prosecution only with regard to "acts performed... in their official capacity".

Mr Kurbalija says the principle establishing immunity from prosecution for the heads of UN agencies is laid down in article six of the 1947 Convention on the Privileges and Immunities of the Specialized Agencies.

This states: "The executive head of each specialised agency... shall be accorded... the privileges and immunities, exemptions and facilities accorded to diplomatic envoys, in accordance with international law."

"The general principle is that heads of international organisations have full diplomatic immunity," Mr Kurbalija says.

Sex Charge Ex-IMF Chief Set To Leave Prison

Hannah Thomas-Peter, Sky News reporter, New York
Former IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn is due to be released from prison later today after being granted bail by a New York court.

A judge in New York set bail at $1m and imposed an insurance bond of $5m.

Strauss-Kahn,will be placed under 24-hour home detention with electronic tagging - conditions which he had already agreed to.

The 62-year-old, who has been formally charged with the sexual assault and attempted rape of a hotel maid, will also be monitored by an armed guard at his expense.

This was the second time within days that he had asked in court to be released.

Strauss-Kahn also signed an affidavit waiving his extradition rights.

..Former IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn is due to be released from prison later today after being granted bail by a New York court.

A judge in New York set bail at $1m and imposed an insurance bond of $5m.

Strauss-Kahn, will be placed under 24-hour home detention with electronic tagging - conditions which he had already agreed to.

He is spending one more night at the notorious Rikers Island prison, where he has been on suicide watch, before being released from custody after paperwork is signed.

His lawyers welcomed the granting of bail, saying they were "very relieved" and expect to return to court on June 6, when the accused will formally answer charges.

Prosecutors confirmed Strauss-Kahn was indicted by a grand jury, which means the case will proceed to a trial if he pleads not guilty.

He has not yet entered a plea but his lawyers have said he intends to deny the charges against him.

His lawyer told the court his French client, who has resigned as managing director of the IMF , was an "honourable man" who would not skip bail.

He said the prospect of the accused "teleporting" himself to France was "ludicrous" as his face was well-known.

Strauss-Kahn's wife and daughter were in court for the hearing.

Prosecutors argued that the accused had no right to be released. They said the proof was substantial and grows every day against him.

On Monday, he was denied bail after the prosecution successfully argued he was a flight risk.

In a resignation letter to the organisation's board on Thursday, he wrote: "I deny with the greatest possible firmness all of the allegations that have been made against me.

"I want to protect this institution which I have served with honour and devotion, and especially I want to devote all my strength, all my time, and all my energy to proving my innocence."

The 32-year-old hotel maid, whose identity is being protected, gave her side of the story to the grand jury on Wednesday.

The hearing was held in secret and it is not known what she said.

Her lawyer Jeffrey Shapiro dismissed speculation that the maid would also pursue Strauss-Kahn for damages in a civil suit.

He said: "It's not contemplated and it's not been discussed ... I'm helping her get through each day."

Strauss-Kahn was detained by New York police on Saturday aboard an Air France flight minutes before it was to depart for Paris.

If the case goes to trial and he is convicted, he faces up to 25 years in prison.

Player's attempt to sue Twitter backfires

Thousands of Twitter users are posting the name of the Premier League star who won a super injunction to stop details of his affair going public in protest at the player's attempts to sue the social networking site.
The star began legal proceedings against Twitter in the High Court earlier this week to try and force the firm to release details of users who had named him as the married player who'd had a lengthy affair with former Big Brother contestant Imogen Thomas.

Lawyers have demanded that Twitter hand over the names of users who disclosed the player's name in order that they could pursue legal action against them, and possibly persuade authorities to bring contempt of court action.

The star's name has been splashed all across Twitter for several weeks - as well as being published in several other countries - but given that the site is US-based it seems the married superstar would have little chance of winning the legal battle.

And now the move has backfired completely as his name has been repeatedly re-Tweeted by fans of the site, who are apparently outraged at the attempt to gag their free speech.

"xx xx is suing Twitter. I can't Imogen why," is just one of the messages being repeated over and over on the site

"We often take bets on the end of the world and we always allow customers to choose their own odds - after all, we don't have to worry about paying them out," said Hill's spokesman Graham Sharpe.

"Unless it transpires that there are bookies in the hereafter."

No end of the world - hoax prediction by Harold Camping.

With no sign of Judgment Day arriving on Saturday as forecast by an 89 year-old California evangelical broadcaster, followers were faced with trying to make sense of his failed pronouncement.

Harold Camping, the former civil engineer who heads the Family Radio Network of Christian stations, had been unwavering in his message that believers would be swept to heaven on May 21.

His Oakland, California-based network broadcasts over 66 U.S. stations and through international affiliates. With the help of supporters it posted at least 2,000 billboards around the United States warning of the Judgment Day.

In New York, retired transportation agency worker Robert Fitzpatrick was inspired by Camping's message to spend over $140,000 of his savings on subway posters and outdoor advertisements warning of the May 21 Judgment Day.

As he stood in Times Square in New York surrounded by onlookers, Fitzpatrick, 60, carried a Bible and handed out leaflets as he waited for Judgment Day to begin.

By his own reading of Bible, which was slightly different than Camping's, Fitzgerald expected the great worldwide event to begin at 6 p.m. Eastern Time.

When the hour came and went, he said: "I do not understand why ...," as his speech broke off and he looked at his watch.

"I do not understand why nothing has happened."

Camping, who previously made a failed prediction Jesus Christ would return to Earth in 1994, had said doomsday would begin at 6 p.m. in the various time zones around the globe.

NEW DAY COMES

That meant it would begin in Asia and Oceania, but with midnight local time having come and gone in those areas, taking them well into May 22, and no indication of an apocalypse, Camping seemed to have gone silent.

During the day, his Family Radio played recorded church music, devotionals and life advice unrelated to Judgment Day.

The headquarters of his network was shuttered on Friday and Saturday, with a sign in the door that read "This Office is Closed. Sorry we missed you!"

Camping, whose deep sonorous voice is frequently heard on his radio network expounding the Bible, could not be reached for comment.

The shades were drawn and no one answered the door at his house in Alameda, California.

Sheila Doan, 65, who has lived next door to Camping since 1971, said he is a good neighbor and she was concerned about Camping and his wife because of the attention his pronouncement has received.

"I'm concerned for them, that somebody would possibly do something stupid, you just don't know in this world what's going to happen," she said.

Tom Evans, a spokesman for Camping, said earlier this week that at least several tens of thousands of people listen to Family Radio's message.

The network is heard in more than 30 languages through international affiliates, according to Family Radio.

In recent weeks, dozens of Camping's followers had crossed the United States in recreational vehicles emblazoned with the May 21 warning. Volunteers also handed out pamphlets as far away as the Philippines, telling people God had left clear signs the world was coming to an end.

In Camping's description of Judgment Day, the Earth would be wrenched in a great earthquake and many inhabitants would perish in the coming months, until the planet's total destruction on October 21.

On Saturday, some atheists in different parts of the country held celebrations and get-togethers to mark the failure of Camping's May 21 prediction to come true.

In Oakland, the same city where Camping's network is based, over 200 people gathered at an atheist convention where speakers joked about the Judgment Day pronouncement and a vendor sold jewelry with the words "Good without God."

Cara Lee Hickey, 32, a Christian turned atheist, said Camping's prediction got people talking.

"I've heard a lot of name-calling, but most of it is from other Christians calling him a false prophet," she said.

IMF chiefs bum leer
at airline hostess By ALEX PEAKE

Published: Today
THE ex-world finance chief accused of rape told an air stewardess "What a nice a***" moments before his arrest, it was claimed last night.
Dominique Strauss-Kahn, 62, is said to have barked the lewd French expression "quel beau cul" at the business class attendant just before take-off last Saturday.

Moments later cops hauled him off the Paris-bound Air France jet in New York and arrested him for sexual assault.

The allegations came as police sources claimed the married ex International Monetary Fund boss was rebuffed by two hotel employees he asked back to his 3,000-a-night suite in the city.

Cops quizzed all staff and studied CCTV at the Sofitel Hotel where it is claimed he raped a maid.

He is on bail in New York and his lawyers say he will plead not guilty in court next month.

FSA Fines Samuel Kahn GBP1 Million, Secures First Final High Court Injunction

Samuel Nathan Kahn - Date of birth 2 December 1970
The Financial Services Authority or FSA has fined Samuel Kahn GBP1.09 million and obtained a High Court injunction restraining him from committing market abuse.

MAIN FACTS:
-This is the first time the FSA has secured a final injunction from the High Court to prevent market abuse and also the first fine calculated under the new penalties system.

-Between March 24, 2010 and April 30, 2010, Kahn co-ordinated a scheme to deliberately inflate the share price of Global Brands Licensing PLC (GBL), a company quoted on PLU.S. Stock Exchange a Recognized Investment Exchange.

-Kahn orchestrated and controlled the vast majority of the trading in GBL's shares in March and April 2010, disguising his involvement in the scheme by repeatedly impersonating other people when placing orders to trade in GBL's shares and co-ordinating trading conducted by third parties.

-The trading moved GBL's share price from 2 pence on March 24, 2010 to 5.25 pence at its height on April 20, 2010.

-The profits from this trading were withdrawn from a third party's bank account at Kahn's instruction and delivered to him in cash.

-The scheme also involved a significant proportion of GBL's shares being donated to charities.

-These donations were co-ordinated by Kahn and aimed at illegitimately taking advantage of GBL's artificially inflated share price for tax relief purposes and for the purpose of facilitating boiler room activities.

-This aspect of Kahn's scheme was not fully implemented due to the suspension of GBL's shares by PLU.S. on 30 April 2010.

-Kahn has never worked at an authorized firm regulated by the FSA but he was the subject of an FSA investigation and enforcement action in 2007 for his involvement in overseas boiler-room activities.

-In 2008 the FSA made Kahn bankrupt after he admitted liability for claims totaling up to GBP3.7 million made by the FSA on behalf of about 800 investors.

-In light of Kahn's previous misconduct and his more recent actions in GBL, the FSA has obtained an injunction at the High Court restraining Kahn from committing market abuse in future.

-This is the first occasion on which the FSA has exercised its powers under the Financial Services and Markets Act 2000 to obtain a final injunction against an individual to restrain market abuse.

-Kahn qualified for a Stage 1 30% discount on the penalty amount under the FSA's settlement discount scheme.

-The fine of GBP1.094,900 reflects this discount.

IMF chief caught in car romp with tart By NICK PARKER

Published: Today
FALLEN IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn was caught with a hooker in a kerb-crawling district, it was claimed yesterday.
The 62-year-old Frenchman - who denies trying to rape a hotel chambermaid in New York - was allegedly busted by cops in his car in 2007.

He was said to have been in a "compromising position" with the tart in the west of Paris - thought to be the sleazy Bois de Boulogne.

The area is known as a haunt for scores of roadside prostitutes, many of whom are South American transsexuals.

Respected French newspaper Le Monde said the story was "leaked" by sources close to president Nicolas Sarkozy.

They insisted no action was taken against Strauss-Kahn.

The ex-IMF boss - on bail in New York - was set to challenge Sarkozy in France's next presidential election. And his political associates believe he is the victim of a stitch-up.

Meanwhile it was claimed friends of Strauss-Kahn have offered the family of the 32-year-old chambermaid a "seven-figure" sum. They live in an impoverished village in Guinea, West Africa.

A source told the New York Post: "He'll get out of it. The woman will get a lot of money." Other reports claim DNA found on the maid's clothes matches Strauss-Kahn.

Controversy increases over choice of IMF chief

Developing countries are expressing increased concern about the possibility of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) again being led by a European.

Following the resignation last week of Dominique Strauss-Kahn the French Finance Minister, Christine Lagarde, was being widely tipped to take over the post and was being backed by the UK Government.

However, representatives of the Brics countries, Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa said choosing a managing director on the basis of nationality undermined the IMF's legitimacy.

In a statement they said: "The recent financial crisis which erupted in developed countries underscored the urgency of reforming international financial institutions so as to reflect the growing role of developing countries in the world economy."

Ex-IMF Chief Strauss-Kahns Accuser Said to Lack Credibility

July 1 (Bloomberg) -- Questions about the credibility of the woman who accused former International Monetary Fund chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn of a sexual attack have placed the case in jeopardy, a person familiar with the matter said. Prosecutors in Manhattan plan to tell a New York state court judge today that their investigation raised doubts about the victims credibility. June 6 (Bloomberg) -- Harvard University law professor Alan Dershowitz talks about the case against former International Monetary Fund Managing Director Dominique Strauss-Kahn. Strauss-Kahn pleaded not guilty three weeks after his arrest on charges of sexually assaulting and trying to rape a Manhattan hotel maid. Dershowitz also comments on U.S. Representative Anthony Weiner's apology today for sending suggestive photos, Twitter messages and other online texts to several women. Bloomberg's Su Keenan reports on Bloomberg Television's "InBusiness With Margaret Brennan" (Source: Bloomberg)

Questions about the credibility of the woman who accused former International Monetary Fund chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn of a sexual attack have placed the case in jeopardy, a person familiar with the matter said.

Prosecutors in Manhattan plan to tell a New York state court judge today that their investigation raised doubts about the victims credibility, said the person, who didnt want to be identified because the matter isnt public. Prosecutors disclosed the information to Strauss-Kahns lawyers, the person said. The New York Times reported the investigators findings late yesterday.

There will be certain disclosures made about the credibility of the witness, Benjamin Brafman, Strauss-Kahns lawyer, said yesterday in a phone interview. A court hearing scheduled for today will include a request for substantial modifications to Strauss-Kahns bail conditions, he said.

Strauss-Kahn, 62, is awaiting trial on charges of sexually assaulting and attempting to rape a Manhattan hotel maid on May 14. He pleaded not guilty and is free on bail under security conditions that include electronic monitoring and an armed guard.

The New York Times reported that investigators found the French politicians accuser had repeatedly lied to prosecutors and had possible links to people involved in criminal activity such as drug dealing and money laundering. The woman spoke to an incarcerated man over the phone within a day of the alleged assault by Strauss-Kahn and discussed with him the possible benefits of pursuing charges against him, the newspaper reported citing two officials it didnt name.
Townhouse

The former IMF chief is living in a rented townhouse in the Tribeca section of Manhattan, only blocks from the courthouse. Since his release from jail on May 20, he has been allowed to leave home only for legal, medical and religious purposes. He posted $1 million cash bail and a $5 million bond.

Erin Duggan, a spokeswoman for Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr., didnt immediately return a call after regular business hours yesterday. Earlier yesterday, she declined to comment other than to say there was a hearing scheduled.

Kenneth P. Thompson, a lawyer representing the woman, didnt immediately return phone and e-mail messages seeking comment after regular business hours yesterday. Thibault de Montbrial, a Paris lawyer hired by Thompson to search for other women Strauss-Kahn may have victimized, declined to comment.

Todays court hearing is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. before New York State Supreme Court Justice Michael Obus. At Strauss- Kahns arraignment on June 6, Obus had scheduled the next court hearing for July 18.
Midtown Sofitel

Strauss-Kahn is accused of attacking a housekeeper, a 32- year-old from Guinea, at the Midtown Manhattan Sofitel on May 14, grabbing her breasts and trying to pull down her pantyhose, prosecutors have said in court papers. The former IMF chief attempted to rape her and forced her to engage in oral sex, according to the indictment.

In a May 25 letter to the Manhattan district attorney complaining about media leaks in the case, Brafman and co- counsel William Taylor III said that, if they wanted to feed the media frenzy, they could release information that would gravely undermine the credibility of the woman.

The prosecutors office responded in a letter May 26 saying it was troubled by the defense lawyers claims they possessed information that might negatively affect the case and the womans credibility.
Forward Immediately

We are aware of no such information, Manhattan Assistant District Attorney Joan Illuzzi-Orbon wrote. If you really do possess the kind of information that you suggest that you do, we trust you will forward it immediately.

Strauss-Kahn was indicted on seven counts, including criminal sex act, attempted rape, sexual abuse, unlawful imprisonment and forcible touching. If convicted of the top charges, he faces as long as 25 years in prison.

Polls had shown Strauss-Kahn as the potential candidate with the best chance of beating French President Nicolas Sarkozy in next Mays general election. Socialist Party hopefuls have until July 13 to register for their primary, which is scheduled for October.

The case is People v. Strauss-Kahn, 2526/11, Supreme Court of the State of New York, New York County (Manhattan).

Dominique Strauss-Kahn arrives for a hearing at the New York State Supreme Courthouse
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Former IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn was released without bail at a New York court hearing for his sexual assault case on Friday.

At a hearing to seek changes to his bail conditions, prosecutors said the credibility of the hotel maid at the centre of the case had been thrown into question.

"I understand that the circumstances of this case have changed substantially and I agree the risk that he would not be here has receded quite a bit. I release Mr. Strauss-Kahn at his own recognizance," Justice Michael Obus told the court.

Strauss-Kahn faces charges including attempted rape, sexual assault and sexual abuse.
