Should I sell my ADVFN shares? (AFN)

Stuckinrut - 18 Feb 2003 10:04

Been a holder for too long but now getting very nervous, bought at 6p. The share price has held up in the last few months but looks like the market makers were dumping stock yesterday. I presume there are some concerns now that they have a competitor but also at a stroke they have wiped out some of their income and path to profits by reducing prices last week.

I sold 100,000 yesterday and am in 2 minds what to do next, anyone holding or selling? Anyone know how much cash they have left as its not too clear from the Annual Report?

Thanks Stuckinrut

Kayak - 18 Feb 2003 10:27 - 2 of 91

Quite apart from their future prospects, 'tis a bit late to be nervous. You should have been very nervous around 5p. Until yesterday you could have sold at 1p, which would have represented an 80% loss on your investment. You sound as though you would have been quite relaxed about that.

There's not really much point in worrying about the other 20% at this point.

Smallchange - 04 Sep 2003 00:57 - 3 of 91

Diffrent picture showing now, glad I kept hold of my position built up downwards from 10p..just gotta wait for the mark..and its a long wait :-(

pennyshare - 09 Sep 2003 15:03 - 4 of 91

Sold some of mine yesterday and balance today. I wonder how the sale of Ample(iii) is progressing. Heard rumours that ADVFN where trying to do a deal but didnt iii lose millions before it was bought by AMP? The time taken to manage such an operation after it has been through so many corporate hands will be a nightmare and a huge cash drain surely. Scary.

Exotoxin - 29 Nov 2007 19:29 - 5 of 91

4 years on the price is just the same!

55011 - 29 Nov 2007 19:58 - 6 of 91

Against a four year bullmarket, it is surely mismanagement.

Mr Magoo - 20 Dec 2007 13:45 - 7 of 91

tossers- website down- always problems over there.

Mr Magoo - 21 Dec 2007 00:40 - 8 of 91

why doesnt anyone else ever comment on this stock

Mr Magoo - 21 Dec 2007 00:40 - 9 of 91

are they going bust

richardbees - 01 Apr 2008 14:00 - 10 of 91

"pretax loss narrows" should be good for the next few years like "pretax loss widens" was for the last few!

sell now before inflation and boredom overtakes.....

Mr Magoo - 04 Jul 2008 16:32 - 11 of 91

does competitor not work anymore

Juzzle - 04 Jul 2008 16:35 - 12 of 91

advfn been broken since about 1:15pm today

kammy - 04 Jul 2008 16:35 - 13 of 91

disgraceful...answer to the header..yes.

Mr Magoo - 04 Jul 2008 16:36 - 14 of 91

that sounds serious- why has the sp been going up?

rayrac - 04 Jul 2008 16:41 - 15 of 91

Are they bust,ie, finance, or is this a tech thing?

romanway - 04 Jul 2008 16:43 - 16 of 91

I had assumed that it was a tech thing. However, they are not usually down for this long. Makes you wonder.

Optimist - 04 Jul 2008 17:03 - 17 of 91

I've run TRACERT which suggests that it is a problem with Colts system.

Navajo - 04 Jul 2008 17:04 - 18 of 91

Last trade time was 4:28. They also went up another 1.5% at 4:15.

A tech thing, but a bad one by the looks of it.

Pugugly - 04 Jul 2008 17:08 - 19 of 91

romanway:> I was told when I phoned it was a techie thing. however down a lot longer than usual - BUT if finance I would have expected rumours and so far as I am aware there have been none. Certainly based on the quality of the Threads I follow they seem to atract more posters some of whom are v-knowledgeable.

Any one with any knowledge?

Pugugly - 04 Jul 2008 17:09 - 20 of 91

Optimist:_ We crossed - I bet COLT age getting a right kicking

halifax - 04 Jul 2008 17:20 - 21 of 91

Unfortunately ADFN seem to have let their members out of the the "FUNNY FARM"!

banjomick - 04 Jul 2008 17:28 - 22 of 91

and it's still down, crikey! Oh dear never mind :-)

Grandma - 04 Jul 2008 17:28 - 23 of 91

halifax- what do you mean? I can't access ADVFN at all this afternoon
do you have a suggestion for a n alternative, please?

NickB - 04 Jul 2008 18:18 - 24 of 91

Perhaps Colt have not been paid.

Nil Pd - 04 Jul 2008 18:45 - 25 of 91

Yes, I think you should

Nil Pd - 04 Jul 2008 18:46 - 26 of 91

...sell your shares, Stuckinrut.

Nil Pd - 04 Jul 2008 18:47 - 27 of 91

If you haven't already.

Nil Pd - 04 Jul 2008 18:49 - 28 of 91

Coz I'm really fed up that I haven't been able to access my favourite and most informative financial site for most of today. It happens to all sites from time to time but in my experience this is the longest they've been down. They must have been hit by a serious bug.

dorothyperkins - 04 Jul 2008 18:52 - 29 of 91

how much cash is left?

invalid - 04 Jul 2008 18:53 - 30 of 91

agree nil pd I am getting withdrawal symptons, it's like losing all your friends.

Nil Pd - 04 Jul 2008 18:56 - 31 of 91

Yes, DTs are setting in already.

Dorothy, I doubt it's a cash problem - Optimist (is that you Optomist from V Fa DN?) has run a check and found it's a COLT problem.

Nil Pd - 04 Jul 2008 18:58 - 32 of 91

Oh well, over to 3 eye...may be more info there.

the pink pound - 04 Jul 2008 19:09 - 33 of 91

Some of us don't have a proper life!

" ADVFN is currently unavailable due to a power failure at our hosting facility.
July 4th 2008 20:00: Our hosting providers are not providing an ETA for power restoration, but our best estimate at this point is at least 6 hours. When power is restored our engineers will then commence brining services on-line. "

Kayak - 04 Jul 2008 20:09 - 35 of 91

Not sure the salt will do the circuits any good :-)

Pugugly - 04 Jul 2008 20:13 - 36 of 91

Exotoxin:- Thanks - May I ask where you got the data as I am still getting nothing on the main site. Some years ago they had a check site but I have lost the reference.

Thanks in advance.

guysands - 04 Jul 2008 20:15 - 37 of 91

I wondered if they had gone bust! LOL! Particularly because private investors are fleeing the market in droves now.

Exotoxin - 04 Jul 2008 20:22 - 38 of 91

Pug - it's on http://www.advfn.com/ for me

The 'status' backup site used to be http://www.success-events.co.uk/Status.htm

Grandma - 04 Jul 2008 21:03 - 39 of 91

Exotoxin- thank you for quoting the message, as the main site is still not coming up. Hope they sort it soon if we are to sleep well!!

dorothyperkins - 05 Jul 2008 00:05 - 45 of 91

Mr Magoo - 05 Jul 2008 00:07 - 46 of 91

is it really worth it, could only get 2.8p at most

Andy - 05 Jul 2008 02:07 - 47 of 91

It may be longer than the morning.

We have just received a call at my company asking for any possible technical help, and we are not the provider, and have no connection at all!

They are looking for electricians for Colt Telecom to help out as total power failure in their building, I presume that is where ADVFN is hosted.

vanhalen - 05 Jul 2008 05:15 - 48 of 91

@DVFN is currently unavailable due to a general power failure at our hosting facility.

July 5th 2008 00:30: Our hosting providers are not providing an ETA for power restoration. They have found the fault and are now testing both sets of of power supply systems. When both sets have been tested they will gradually start supplying power to the data center.

I don't know whether to sell the shares but as I haven't been able to connect to the site for the last 20 hours, I'm wondering whether they've gone out of business.

Major power outage hits New York, other large cities
Thursday, August 14, 2003 Posted: 11:45 PM EDT (0345 GMT)

NEW YORK (CNN) -- Power began to flicker on late Thursday evening, hours after a major power outage struck simultaneously across dozens of cities in the eastern United States and Canada.

banjomick - 05 Jul 2008 23:36 - 76 of 91

It's all quite strange in that where have all the ADVFN posters gone to,have they just stopped posting full stop! There appears to be a lot of them who have a lot to say but from what I can see they haven't gone elsewhere, not in any great numbers anyway!

Surely ADVFN is not made up of multi-user names? Now where is me sharpening stone? :-)
