Pace Micro looking forward (PIC)

little woman - 08 May 2003 23:40

Origonally purchased in '99 at just over 1 and sold out at just over 10 a year later. Bought back in on the way down about 7 and watched the price go down and down!

Watched the price drop to 9p and now up to 40p. Finally some really good news:

Today: 8 May 2003, it is announced that: Pace wins new business with Australian operator FOXTEL

Pace Micro Technology plc has today announced a new digital set-top box
agreement to supply FOXTEL, Australia's leading subscription television
provider. FOXTEL will utilise Pace's latest digital set-top box platform to
launch its new digital cable service and extend its existing digital satellite
operation.

We may never go back to the prices of 3 years ago, but if the price continues up to 80p, buying in now could recover the loses. But will the share price make 80p?

ainsoph - 09 May 2003 07:35 - 2 of 23

I bought some at 20p or so a long while back ......

Not currently holding but can say this - I was looking at digital set top boxes recently and there are lots on the msarket with the Nokia and Grundig boxes considered to be the best. I looked on the high street and the net and Pace was no where to be seen despite peps like JL and Dixons holding a massive range....... this is a big market

I agree that in the UK shops PACE products are not really competing well, I don't think Pace care too much because they main market is to do tie up's so they are the only supplier to one of the major companies. They lost out when they withdrew NTLs credit facility, so NTL went elsewhere. I think this was about 30% of thier business at the time. Also Telewest was a big purchaser too - and they have reduced their spending. I think The only big contract they seem to have left was with TimeWarnerAOL (?), which is what has been keeping them afloat.

I presume this latest contract will go a long way to get back the lost business.

ainsoph - 09 May 2003 10:27 - 4 of 23

I think it's foolish of them not to compete - well over a million boxes sold already .... the Nolia box retails at 140 and plenty of others around 100. Still a big potential market with the increase of 2nd /3rd sets. also keeps the name in front of your audience

I agree, which is why they can so easily turn from making lots of money to losses. Too much reliance on the "big contract". But in the short term - I just want it to go to about 80p! It'll be interesting to see if the share makes it!

Evolution Beeson Gregory has buy ratings for Serco, and Pace Micro Technology and outperform ratings for Debenhams and ParthusCEVA.

If I remember correctly production was moved to the Far East and as such unit cost price on the boxes should have fallen translating to the bottom line one hopes!
Yes agree marketing is all-important and companies need to be in your face on the high street.
Considering things have been pretty dire for pace they do seem to targeting the right kind of business at this time, and succeeding to some extent. As we know marketing is very expense and not as necessary when you can get others to do it for you, in this case the Australians

Yes ..... I noticed that - even got a leaflet to see what they had to say. There is a good website and lots of info on the available hardware. I liked the spec on the Nokia but it was on the big side

I purchased a Grundig box for 75 from Comet two months ago. I now get channel 5 for the first time and the other channels the BBC are adverting. I actually rarely watch any of it! There was no sign of the PACE box in Comet.

ainsoph - 09 May 2003 14:36 - 11 of 23

Grundig have a new more compact box available with a remote extender which allows you to hide the box

Tris - 09 May 2003 17:02 - 12 of 23

Looking at the purchases for day (especially with the last one you mention) the difference between them is huge, yet the share price has hardly moved.

Am I missing something?

Tris - 09 May 2003 17:16 - 14 of 23

Me and you both little woman lol..we need ains back for a full explanation of possibilities. He will help out here I know.

The last one clearly doesnt efect the trading/price but a look at the trades indicates very few done on sets and therefore not price moving in themselves. i often use off sets trades.

little woman - 09 May 2003 17:32 - 16 of 23

sorry ains, but you're going to have explain in more detail, what to look for.

Tris - 09 May 2003 17:34 - 17 of 23

Cheers Ains..there you go little women, not sure where it leaves us, but at least we know what it was lol

Only trades on sets moves the price by virtue of the orders disapearing .... off sets trades are done through brokers at the touch price or better (which comes from sets)

little woman - 09 May 2003 17:43 - 20 of 23

So when we take a look at the trades, whidh are the set trades?

ainsoph - 09 May 2003 17:50 - 21 of 23

they are marked up - yellow on ME or AT instead of O

little woman - 09 May 2003 17:57 - 22 of 23

ains, I know its nothing to do with pace, but...........if you take a look at the trades on CS. the AT buys are way higher than the sells, yet the price has hardly moved. Is there something I am missing?

ainsoph - 09 May 2003 18:05 - 23 of 23

Corus is a highly traded share and moves fast ..... the trade analyser is almost certainly wrong but you will note the sets trades are again not in the majority. Its more an art form than science but you have to look at a number of factors including the timing of the trades and flow of orders. Corus and Pace are not really comparable
