U+,
Well, what a week that was!
It really makes you wonder when TEP will stop rising?
I was comments such as "the P/E is too high" when it was at half the price, so not sure where we stand now.
My guess is that TEP will keep on rising until Express Day, in the expectation of some good news beig announced.
And I wouldn't count against it either!

Well Utilitiesplus I see it as a fantastic growth company and a long term hold.
You might be interested to see this lifted from Robbie Burns site the Frequenttrader.........................
Star of the day though is Telecom Plus which is soaring higher as I write. It looks like it is going to break through previous highs soon on its way to 350p.
An interesting e-mail regarding the head man at Telecom Plus, Sir Charles Widoger from a reader. He spotted Sir Charles has set up directorships in dormant companies including Credit Card Plus, Petrol Plus, Car Plus, Air Plus, Water Plus, Insurance Plus among many others.
This is interesting as it shows where the company could be heading in the future - I can see credit cards and water provision, car rental looks possible and house insurance but I'm not sure how he is going to sell air!
He is a great businessman and it looks like he is going to try and supply everything you'd normally pay for at home. Now imagine what all these services to come will do to the company's share price.. on top of that, those becoming distributors now could find they are getting in at an excellent time! ENDS.
Very interesting indeed and shows just how much growth the CEO could get out of this gem of a company. Think I will add now.
cheers.

Well we can see from this which way the company is going and for those of you who think it might be too late to get in think again, heres the last trading update from the company and dont forget just over 20 days to results, which should show the Forward P/E to be very underdemanding indeed..........

Shares For A Bull Run 21/10/2003
Market Comment
By Maynard Paton
These days, every man and his brother is a 'value' investor. No surprise really, since the bear market has unmasked numerous 'growth' share charlatans. Plodding smokestack businesses with their reliable dividends are now the way forward. Or are they?
Trouble is, us punters too often invest through the rear-view mirror. The time for high dividend shares was 1999 -- prior to the bear -- not 2003. So, looking forward to the emergence of a new bull market, surely now must be the time to return to growth shares.
As noted before, tomorrow's bull market leaders will be small, growing companies that are too young and too obscure to have upset a crowd of investors during the previous market downturn. With no history of disappointment to hold them back, investors will soon appreciate these new stock market 'stories', especially if a castle in the air can be constructed.
With that in mind, Telecom Plus could well be a future bull market champ. Floated in July 2000 at 200p, its shares now trade at 325p -- somewhat amazing given the company's activity: supplying telephony services to small and medium-sized businesses. Today, Telecom Plus said its full-year profits would be 'significantly ahead of expectations'. What were those expectations? Earnings growth of 25% this year and 35% next.
Corin should also do well in a bull run. It develops and manufactures a wide range of reconstructive orthopaedic devices and floated at 111p during May 2002. Corin's latest annual results showed sales up 23%, profits up 62% and operating margins of 18%. With 'considerable' opportunities for 2003, brokers anticipate profit growth of 44% this year and 24% in 2004.
Finally, Sondex (LSE: SDX.L - news) is another growth business without bear market baggage. Having floated at 100p just three months ago though, the developer of oil well inspection devices has yet to publish any results in listed form. Still, over the past four years, operating margins of 27%-plus have been recorded, while sales and profits have experienced average annual growth of about 25%. 'Increasing demand' and lower interest payments are set to boost this year's earnings per share by 170%. Growth of 19% is expected in 2004.

Under 'normal' benign market conditions I usually note maximums for both buying and selling TEP of around 5000 each. Currently the maximum Buy is a paltry 500 shares whereas the maximum sell is ...... wait for it ..... 25,0000 shares.
The MM's want your shares to sell to others. They'll pay a bit more yet __ in fact make that a lot more. All aboard for the Great Ride North? Yes sireee.

Mark, it means in a nutshell that I am very confident it will rise further. If I was to say Bearish that would be exactly the opposite. I really should have put long term bullish. Anyway heres Robbie Burns comment on Telecolm plus today.........
Interesting to read the BT statement. The way I read it is it's saying it can't compete that well with companies like Telecom Plus and Thus taking business away so it is simply going to increase dividends and become an income stock rather than a growth stock.
I'm not surprised to see Telecom Plus higher after the BT announcement - it looks like BT is not going to get much more competitive on pricing which can only help TP.

Help To Save Money On Bills.
129 words
Somerset Guardian
35
English
(c) 2003 Somerset Guardian
Michael Rhodes, organiser of the Frome Ideas Fair, has launched a service offering a way to save money on household bills.
Mr Rhodes and his wife Kay are independent distributors for Telepounds.com Plus PLC.
Subscribers receive one itemised bill covering their charges for telephone, mobile, gas, electricity and internet charges, rather than getting each bill separately.
Mr Rhodes said: "Many people are paying more than they need, and we introduce them to a service that can save them significant amounts of money, and in some case hundreds of pounds. We then help by filling in the single form that is necessary." Telecom Plus PLC, also known as The Utility Warehouse, can be contacted on 01373 303811, or at www.smartroute.co.uk. ENDS.
Just one of many promotiond going on around the country in this fine company.

Hi...This board is not for touting for business.!!
I am also a distributor for T+,but know that this for discussion and advice on the companies etc not a sales pitch. If this was the case the boards would sink below an avalanche of in effect spam.
Yes T+ is a low cost model of operation but the costs get charged somewhere,in fact at the distributors door.
My feeling about share price is that it has reached a level which will only move in relation to any further additional increase in profit.
No I do not hold T+ shares either as options or as a fully paid up shareholder unfortunately.

Wansford,
Agreed, the T+ thread on ADVFN was like that for a while, as was the Kleeneze one, where people were effectively touting for business rather than posting about their views about T+!
I doubled my money on T+, but doubt they can carry on producing these sort of increases. As with other MLM companies before, a degree of saturation will eventually set in, and it's surely only a matter of time before a serious competitior starts up and markets telephony and utilities together?
It's now VERY hard for anyone to declare themselves "the cheapest" in the telecom market, due to a myriad of tariffs.

ANDY, i cant believe your post!! ( a degree of saturation will set in?)what rubbish is that,,we only have 1% of the market, you and i will be in a nursing home before that happens! U+,
Yes I saw that news the other day.
You miss the point that a lot of people don't WANT to change!
Look at the growth of T+, considering their prices, is not exactly phenominal, is it? It is taking a long time for them to achieve a customer base, and I think you will see a competitor in the market place soon, maybe Tesco?
Please don't go down the personal abuse route when someone doesn't agree with you, debate is preferable surely?
utilitiesplus
- 21 Nov 2003 13:34

Andy, this is not personal, using referal marketing we were the 3rd fastest growing company in 2002,11th best share performer 2002,these are incredible statistics.Yes the take up is slow and always will be with our method. The company has come a long way in the last 6 years and the bank balance speaks volumes,NO DEBT what so ever, aquisitions payed for in cash!! You will not see many companies that can pull this off especially in our market.
As for a competitor,it will not happen! Tesco wouldnt operate a networking system for a start and without this form of buisiness they could not compete on our level, yes they may aquire more services but on one billing platform,NO.Others have tried outside the energy market such as Virgin to get a national supplying liscense for gas and elec and they have failed..And until these companies go down the T+ route they will NEVER be able to offer ours prices!!!You as an exec should know this!!!
Therefore never mind how much people could save with us whether its 1000 p/a or 200 p/a the fact remains that if a customers brings all thier services to us they will have the best price package on the market barring NONE!!!

U+,
I am well aware of the products T+ offer, but they still aren't collecting customers at the rate they might, IMHO, and this MAY be down to consumer resistance to change, and nothing to do with tariffs and cross utility billing.
Tesco and Sainsbury's are now entering the fray, and would be trusted suppliers insofar as people trust their brand names, and yet they too aren't doing that well.
The carphone Warehouse seems to be doing very well, and theirs is a good scheme because they cross sell their mobile customers at the point of sale, and have nearly 50% of T+ customer total in a few months, and a much faster growth rate!
With regard to Tesco, they may not do cross utility billing, but there's nothing to stop them offering cross utility discounts, and referring one to the other! I'm not saying they are going to do it, just that it is a possibility.
I would be careful about claiming that T+ tariffs are guaranted to be the lowest, some of their phone tariffs aren't necessarily!
In truth it's hard to navigate the myriad of deaus being offered by so many6 suppliers, but to make a generic statement "we are the cheapest" is probably not possible, because it depends on so many factors, such as individual useage.
I agree T+ are a good company, and I did very well with them, but see some consolidation at this point, and i expect more competition to emerge!
Andy.

HI....My post of last week I feel has put a bit of life into this thread.
Alot of the postings on tjese sites seem to be very much along the lines arent we great or just look its gone up or down so much, but very little of hard info for one to consider to make an objective decision,so a few facts about T+ for you to make an informed investment decision,as follows.
T+,is a virtual utility company, owning no hardware as such in terms of networks, masts ,power stations or the like, being total reliant on its ability to get the best terms, from 02,T+,Opal telecom ,the power generators etc,so no nasty capital plant to renew, depreciate etc.
Its does not advertise at all,all selling costs are born by the distributors.
The distributors pay to join, and get paid when thy sign up a customer and an ongoing basis,as long as the customers stay with T+,ie the residual income.
The distributors are controlled and motivated by the senior distributors,so that the only staff directly employed are the call centre/customer service staff, plus accounting function and IT.
Now you will see that even as there is 10000 dists and 150000 customers, the lack of customers in relation to say carphone/talktalk @350.0k+ is not a big problem,if a dist does not sign up customers its not costing T+ just the dist.
In a way its a very wasteful system but as long as dist base keeps expanding then so does customers.
A sthe costs remain fixed the customer increase goes straight to bottom line,as also T+ has no debt, its a cash cow and will only get the hiccups when business declines.
To counter the argument MLM reaches saturation, even in the market place sinc e advent of carrier pre selection there is the ability to slowly increase market share which is happening.
The dream of financial independence draws people in ,but as can be seen from the figs 10.0k dist 150.0k customers a lot of people are dreaming not living the dream.
Yes there is competition from tesco.carphone uncle tom cobleigh and all but because we at T + work more on recommendation than advertising which I find has nil effect then we will keep gpoing at or near the best value end.
Yes there are companies cheaper on phone calls, mobile and occasionaly on gas and electricity but nobody bills on one bill/platform with as good across the board value, with excellent customer service as back up.
Unfortunately I did not get into shares at beginning of the year and have no intention now with p/e of 50+ and yield of 1.5
I dont know if U+ shares are options, but this is another area in which T + rewards its distributors.
Right the above is info ,not armp for the company and is put on the board to give some constructive reasons for investing only,my only interest is to explain it because as a distributor some waffle, hype and ignorance had been shown about the company.
Trust the above is of benefit to present or future investors.

Telecom plus has gained 9.3% to 371.5p over five days. On 17 September it said it expects the financial performance for the year ending 31 March 2004 will be significantly ahead of market expectations at the time. After the announcement of its interims tomorrow, 28 November, the directors intend to pay an interim dividend of 4.5p, an increase of 80% compared with the same period last year.

Chock theres profit taking going on prior to results in the morning, was to be expected, seems to happen in nearlly all stocks at the moment.
Im sure we will see a quick recovery and then a march on upwards. To get in top 250 depends what other companies do aswell but Robbie Burns the Frequenttrader is very confident they will do it, and this would mean exposure to far more Trusts/institution buying. They love stocks like this that plod up northwards.
Im looking towards a very healthy 2004 on this one.

From Robbie Burns the Frequenttrader............
An excellent set of results from Telecom Plus pleased me today. The 80% rise in dividend is very welcome and shows how serious the company is about becoming a big player.
The share price has been all over the place but who cares? It’s along-term winner and I intend to hold for a long time. The future looks good.
They use very “prudent” accounting. There is nothing more to come here except for extra growth. What’s even better about the company is, if there is a recession people will be after cut-price gas electricity and phone services even more!

Picked this up this morning from iii.
On a prospective p/e multiple of c30x for y/e 31/3/04, the above heading might seem absurd. However, put this rating in the context of annual e.p.s growth of nearly 70% - similar to that achieved in H1 - and between 40% and 45% in each of the following two years, and it's not, IMHO, so silly. On this basis, the respective PEGs for '04, '05 and '06 would be 0.45, 0.51 and 0.37: expensive?? Furthermore, T+ returned exactly 50% on capital employed last year (a "clean" ROCE when compared with so many other cos which exclude pre-1998 goodwill from their accounts, tucking it away within the small print as a note to the reserves; naughty)and this seems destined to increase whilst cash flow is strongly positive with NCF representing 124% of net attrib at the interim stage. Margins are actually rising, despite fixed-line telephony now accounting for less than 50% of revenue, with the Opus investment and full OFGEM licence helping to improve margins on the energy supply side.
Overall, the interim results could hardly be faulted and the fact that the shares didn't respond was, of course, due to their c40% outperformance of the FTSE since the trading update in September. Nevertheless, I for one didn't quite expect a virtual doubling of profits, delighted though I was! Customer growth during the first 6 months was nearly 70% of that achieved throughout the WHOLE of last year and given the underlying momentum in distributor / customer growth plus the fact that T+ still has barely 0.7% of the available market(which surely answers Tom Fingers' concern over the exhaustion of potential converts), there can't be any valid reason why earnings shouldn't continue to climb exponentially - all IMHO!! Hence the forecast numbers given earlier and my view that the shares remain a "BUY" despite regularly hitting new all-time "highs"; but this is what a genuine quality growth stock is really all about, isn't it? Quality seldom comes cheap but as I've tried to argue here, I think it could still be so in this case.
There is still considerable pent-up demand from institutional investors and with the "free float" under 50% (with none of the former holding 3% or more of the equity), the lack of market liquidity should add to the company's fundamental attractions in continuing to drive the share price upwards. To what level and by when? I very much doubt if T+ will ever - certainly not for the moment - be accorded a PEG of anywhere near 1.0, otherwise we'd be thinking in terms of a price approaching 7 within the next year; the market simply won't accept that any company can keep growing at the rates which T+ is achieving ad infinitum. But the longer that it does keep its record intact, the more credibility it will recieve and unlike most other cos, T+ doesn't have to worry about constraints on things like production, raw materials, recruitment, planning applications and heavy outlays on R & D, plant, new factories / retail outlets, inventories etc. It is, therefore, in a virtually unique situation and given what it has already achieved, the entry barriers are now, IMHO, quite high. For instance, in terms of convergent billing, Centrica, which is the only genuine multi-utility competitor, would probably go bust if it tried to convert from its traditional system of seperate invoicing for each different service given the ensuing upheaval in IT systems conversion / integration and the enormous cost of so doing, not forgetting the expense of rectifying processing errors and customer defection caused by all the inevitable confusion. As far as marketing is concerned, one has to remember that T+ went through some very difficult times in its early days when the competitive climate was not as severe as it is now and a new entrant today would find the start-up phase almost impossible to weather by offering cut-priced tarriffs to build a customer base large enough to ever hope to achieve critical mass.
So to go back to answer (or try to) what price and by when? A target PEG of, say, 0.7 doesn't seem unreasonable when applied to y/e 31/3/05 in respect of which, my e.p.s projection is c17p. This would, therefore, give a price of very nearly 500p and one would expect the market to start discounting next year's results in earnest during Q1 of next calendar year (?). With the shares closing on Friday at 362p, this scenario infers an upside of c38% between now and next February/March - some three to four months away; quite a tall order but not impossible. Whatever, T+ is NOT a short term punt but a stock which looks increasingly like a thoroughbred and should be invested in as such.
Just two further points: when trying to set a PEG target, one must be as sure as one can that the growth rate for the year or years in question is broadly maintainable - 60% down to, say, 40% for the following couple of years is O.K but not to only 13% or 8% (just for those who aren't familiar with the PEG concept). Secondly, my calculations / estimates are pretty unscientific and there's no special reason why I've dropped my projected e.p.s growth rates for '05 and '06 down to c40% from 67% for this year (ending 31/3/04). It's purely general conservatism and the practice I've always followed of being purposefully cautious when bullish of a share and optimistic (earnings-wise) when bearish and recommending sales if that makes any sense!
Incidently, some of you may have noticed that the interim tax charge for T+ worked out at just over 32% compared with a little under 25% at the halfway stage last time. This was due to the exhaustion of tax losses brought forward in one subsidiary and slightly higher bad debt provisions above the level agreed with HMG for tax offset - don't worry, it doesn't mean that more of us aren't paying our bills, it's just prudent accounting. I get the impression that the full year rate may ease back slightly.

There were a couple of big deals in Telecom Plus yesterday - it could be the biggest shareholder Sir Charles Widoger making another gift to his charitable foundation.
Or he could be releasing shares for institutions, or he could simply be banking some cash. Whatever it didn't affect the price much so I suspect there is nothing to worry about.

Just read a post on iii and some broker or forecaster reckons T+ growth will slow down next year! Is he wired up,does he think us Exec's are gonna slow down when there is residual and share options up for grabs? I think that now the share price is at an high and exec's realise what their share options are worth for the lttle effort put in to get them this year will be like every other, massive action..For example from my point of view my share options are worth around ?6.500 profit for getting around 25 customers, does he not realise that when we get the go ahead for options again knowing what i know now that i will indeed sign everyone and their dog to qualify for more! Why then should next years results slow down??Does he not understand how T+ go about their biz i wonder??

Hi, I'm new to the shares game and Money AM, and like chock, am also a Distributor for TP. I'd just like to mirror what chock said about the growth of TP Distributors all over the UK. I'm in the North, where there are more than 40 or 50 Distributors a week signing up in Manchester alone. Now, I'm not suggesting theyre all "dynamic", but there are many quality Distributors out there who will continue to expand their businesses at a fast rate. I'm convinced the company will be a household name in a few years, and have invested a rather large pot of my savings in its' shares!

I have it on good authority that the CEO, Charles Wigoder sold 10% of his share of the company recently. That 10% is to be split between two main new investors into TP, as yet unidentified, but the news is apparently 'very exciting'. There is also going to be a final Share Option promotion for Distributors in the New Year. Well worth going all out for if you ask me, and will definately boost customer figures for the Annual Report

There was an interview with Sir Charles Wigoder, the chief man at Telecom Plus in the Mail on Sunday – he says he expects Telecom Plus to become a FTSE 100 company and as the article says if anyone can so it he can!

Now chairman and dominant figure in Telecom Plus, which sells cut-price household power and phone services, there are few signs of him taking it easy.
The company is valued at 224M, but Wigoder reckons it will join the 1bn-plus heavyweights in the FTSE 100 index within five years. Hardly a leisurely pace.
But the world championship bridge player simply can't resist taking the next big challenge - and the next risk. 'It's not about money - that is just the score. I am ambitious, I have always wanted to be the best. If I'd followed my father into law, I'd have wanted to be a Law Lord.'
Wigoder peppers his speech with ums and ahs, but he is purposeful in thought and action.
Slicing into a thick steak at lunch in London's Caprice, he confidently reels off figures suggesting the group will double in size in four years...and double again by 2010.
At 42, he has time on his side. He has a young family - a boy of 13 and three girls aged 11, 8 and 4 - and splits domestic life with wife Lizzie between homes in north London and the Cote d'Azur.
In the firm's last financial year, he pocketed 255,000 under the open-ended contract he negotiated in 1998 when he joined the cash-strapped business as executive chairman and largest single shareholder.
Wigoder was just 35 when he made his mark with People's Phone. Vodafone paid 77m cash for the company and he walked away with 6.5m. Now, just seven years later, his stake in Telecom Plus is worth eight times that.
Was he resentful that his venture capital backers got the bulk of the profit from his labours?
'No,' he replied philosophically, 'it's the old argument - you can have 100% of nothing or a small percentage of something large.'
But his passion for taking risks means he is less sanguine about the regulatory regime for publicly quoted businesses.
'All the regulation in the world will not prevent dishonest businessmen from defrauding investors,' he said.
'The Government seems to want to regulate risk out of the market, but the nature of capitalism is about taking risks. Institutions* and investors should be able to assess risk. All regulation does, is increase cost.'
Early in his career, working as a 'teenage scribbler' analysing stocks, he met Michael Green and wrote about the 'very charismatic chairman' of Carlton Communications.
He was hired by Green as head of corporate finance and development, engineering audacious deals to accelerate Carlton's growth. But his two biggest deals - bids for Thames Television and for satellite TV, subsequently BSkyB - both failed.
Itching to run a business himself, he struck out on his own when Green refused to give him command of a Carlton division. It was 1986, the height of the have-it-all era.
'There was huge opportunity,' recalled Wigoder. 'We could issue paper to acquire businesses. I had a credible management team, a good story and the right track record. There were lots of institutions prepared to be supportive.'
He joined Sangers Photographic, a small firm quoted on the second-tier Unlisted Securities Market, changed the name to Quadrant Group and took it to a full listing.
The firm had a lucrative shop in London selling car phones, but after Vodafone and Cellnet refused it a licence as a service provider, Quadrant bought one via Southern Cell Phones, based in Essex. But the stock market crash in 1987 dramatically stopped Quadrant's ambitions.
Wigoder based himself in Essex to sort out Southern Cell Phones - and saw the future. He was convinced there would be huge growth in mobile phones, but could not persuade Quadrant's chairman to bet the ranch on it. So he remortgaged his flat and raised 500,000 to start People's Phone.
Two years after the sale to Vodafone, Wigoder underwrote a rights issue to raise 1.1m for Telecom Plus. He rewired its business model and operations. It kept its marketing and distribution methods, capturing customers cheaply through personal recommendation of 10,000 freelance distributors. This army of foot soldiers, growing at 500 a month, earns commission recruiting friends, family and neighbours to Telecom Plus services.
At meetings in local hotels, recruits are served tea and biscuits with the incentive of extra income. Unlike a pyramid, distributors earn commission from real income paid by customers they introduce.
Telecom Plus raised a further 5m in 1999 from new shares and convertible* loan stock and floated at 2 a share in 2000 to raise 3.5m. The shares crashed to 70p during the bear market* but have recovered to 367p.
Wigoder, not one to suffer self-doubt, remained sanguine throughout. 'I am no longer in such a hurry,' he said reflectively. 'Telecom Plus is a long term project and I can afford to be patient.'

I think a lot of this company and feel 'Widgy' is a good manager. I always have said show me a good management and I will show you good staff and a good company. Anyway Guys here is a bit more positive publicity from the Sunday press...................
Telecolm Plus tipped as share for the year by Amanda Forsyth of Standard Life in the Observer today.
In brief she says it is easy and cheap to recruit new customers through the Business model. Also says as new customers join the firms buying power will improve.
Says both the number of customers and services taken per household are expected to grow steadily, delivering forecast earnings growth of at least 30%.
The likelihood of positive earnings looks high.
The company is on the brink of joining the FTSE Mid 250 index, which will widen its audience significantly and this should help the the price of the shares. ENDS.
cheers GF.

Chairman is quids in at Telecom Plus
Published: 10:21 Sun 25 Jan 2004
By Graeme Davies, Companies Correspondent
Email to a friend
Telecom Plus' chairman is 400,000 better off today after selling some shares; meanwhile a trio of shrewd investors are hanging on to their stakes.
Peter Nutting offloaded 100,000 shares on Thursday at 402p each, banking 402,000 in the process. However he does still hold 851,700 shares or 1.4% of the 240 million company (TEP).
He was joined by fellow non-executive director Dominic Wheatley who sold a more modest 25,000 shares at 402p each, banking 100,000. Wheatley has 243,060 shares left.
Their double sale has depressed investors a little and Telecom Plus's share price slipped by 2.5p to 401p on Friday. Its share price growth has been phenomenal over the past two years, rising from 84p in early 2002 to an all-time high of 408p earlier this month.
Citywire tipped Telecom Plus in May 2002 at 109.5p so Friday's closing price represents a 266% gain in less than two years. We have already advised investors to book some profits but hold on to a residual stake and this remains our advice as the company still appears to have some way to go.
Three top investors obviously share this view as they are clinging on to their stakes. New Star's AAA-rated Patrick Evershed, Dan Nickols of Old Mutual who replaced Ashton Bradbury at the turn of the year on the Old Mutual UK Smaller Companies Inc fund and Carl Stick of Rathbones are all continuing to hold Telecom Plus in their funds.
Telecom Plus' simple yet effective strategy is to sign up customers as agents who pass on the good word to friends, family and colleagues in return for a small fee. As the company has expanded from telephony into gas, electricity and internet services so its customer base has steadily swollen.
In the first half of the year it signed up 26,000 new customers to take its total to 160,000, double the number of new customers from the previous year. This helped turnover rise by 46% to 37.2 million and pre-tax profits by 96% to 4.9 million. With just 160,000 customers Telecom Plus has a lot of the country to go at yet and few are willing to bet against it at the moment.
cheers GF.

Check this out folks,interesting!!
Sales army pays at Telecom plus
Midas, Mail on Sunday
14 March 2004
GETTING sales to grow without incurring high costs is a problem for small companies, but utilities reseller Telecom plus appears to have hit on an interesting solution.
Instead of relying on expensive marketing and direct sales forces, the company uses a network of independent distributors to sign up customers for its cut-price phone, gas, electricity and internet services.
These independent distributors, which currently number 12,000, mostly part-time, then take a cut of the amount spent by the customers they have signed up.
It has proved an effective way to build up more than 160,000 customers for Telecom plus, where chief executive Charles Wigoder controls 25% of the shares.
Wigoder previously founded the People's Phone retail chain and sold it to Vodafone.
Using independent distributors in this manner is also a cheap way to acquire clients, with the company's administrative costs running at less than ten% of revenues.
The growth in customers has translated into rapid rises in profits. For the financial year that closes at the end of this month, analysts expect profits of about 10.7 million, up from 6 million last time.
The shares closed last week at 337 1/2p, valuing the group at 206 million. A forecast dividend* of 9.5p leaves them yielding a prospective
Trading under the Utility Warehouse brand, about half the company's turnover comes from fixed telephony, with a third from mobile. But energy is growing quickly and customer discounts increase when they sign up for more services.
Midas verdict: Growth companies do not come cheap and Telecom plus shares trade at a heady 29 times forecast earnings per share*. However, the multiple does fall sharply on expectations for future years. Telecom plus has an interesting business model that should be capable of creating a much bigger business in the next few years. The share price has doubled over the past year, but has drifted lower from a high of 407 1/2p in January, so now looks a good time to buy.

A lot of people are asking why the weakness in the price of TEP, well I for one dont think it is anything other than general market sentiment of a weak nature that we have seen over the past few weeks. When this one moves it tends to move in a big way either way.
Its certainly not a different company than it was 3 weeks back.
This is what Robbie Burns the Frequenttrader had to say about it today......
The Mail seems to be tipping my whole portfolio at the moment - they tipped Telecom Plus last week. Maybe it will be Vanco or Fenner at the weekend?
Talking of Fenner that's up a bit today and it slowly seems to be gathering a head of steam. If we can clear 105p, 120 looks on the cards.
Ashtenne continues to go higher as does Gyrus. Carrs Milling should report soon and that should lift the shares. AMEC looks strong.
Telecom Plus is suffering from weakness but it always does when there's not been news for a while, a statement is due soon and that should help lift the shares again.ENDS
A statement soon. Off the cuff Im not sure wether this is a trading statement or part year results, either way Im sure we will get very positive comments.
Stick in there.
cheers GF.

Charles buys in around 60,000 shares and the price doesnt reflect..Whats goin on?? Results are out soon and are expected to do very well indeed..This is a great long term hold stock so why so many sells,,why has the price dropped so much??There was a sell signal given from Shares Mag,,and they reported that charles wants to sell..What a load of b----------s,surely the price hasnt reflected this stupid piece of advice??

Free calls sounds great for the customers but if the customers are not paying for the calls how will the distributors get paid ?
I realise that this offer is only to other Telecom Plus customers so how many Distributors will want to get existing customers to encourage their friends and family to sign up knowing that they will lose the commissions on the calls?
I know there is gas and electricity to consider, but I would have thought that with free calls some Distributors will see their commissions reduced.
Ultimately as with the customers the distributors are the life blood of the Company
Its a great business plan and a cheap way of getting customers but if they go down the road of free calls to compete it might backfire
I hope Telecom Plus is not shooting itself in the foot here
Just a thought

I imagine they are hoping the customer will take more services..Me for example always get the energy along with the phone deal..When i find out more i will let you know.
Mark
Did you take up the offer??

This one just keeps dropping, day after day.
After sitting on a nice 10% profit, and expecting great things, it's now been whittled a way to a 5% loss!!
Can anybody shed any light on what's happening? And please, no sales pitches from TEP distributors!!

Princess, this always happens before the results come out,it has the last two times anyway. Also when there is no news for the company to give out people lose interest in this share hence it tends to drop again.Whenever news is released it has always been good news which tends to rally the price once more..Results are out at the end of may and are expected to do well,,this is when the price should see big improvements..

If people who wrote in magazines knew what they were talking about, they
would be making lots of money trading.Been in theese for a long time and
I hope to make a lot more money by holding long term.

SELL,they have some very wierd ways of thinking these mags!!! Do they get paid for talking out of their arse..LOL..I think the rise stems from the director buying in but if things go as usuall this share will climb just before results are out and again after for a couple of weeks strong.
I can tell you that the response from our free call offer has bought in great results and will do for quite a while..

I hope, for TPlus Guy's sake, that this one shows some upward movement before he returns from his hols!
Seems to be sinking like a stone. Surely this is more than a tree-shake, although there's not been any news, as far as I'm aware, which could cause such a drop.
Any other holders with any thoughts?

PRINCESS
every share in my portfollio is red today and olthough i am many thousands down i still have my sense of humour.re telecom plus been in theese since 2.20 and still expect 10.00 long term.its been a bumpy ride since 4.00 but with directers buying last month and results due soon i still intend to hold, historicly the price always seems to drop before results. no advice intended,i have spoken to a couple of distributers and they tell me buiseness is booming.

Sorry that your portfolio is down at the mo'. I agrre with you that TEP is still a good long term hold. It's a;ready started its tentative way back up.

Hi Guys im back from hols and yes i am surprised but not alot because like Roy has said this share always drops before results are put out and then seems to go from strenth to strenth..I know the results will be good again because we have grown in both customer and distributor numbers and more poeple are taking multiple services..
Our free telephone offer has brought in quite alot too. This share could go 10+ in time because of the way we operate which means we should see growth every year for some time to come and unless we get replicated which would be hard there is going to be more services added to our list which in turn should help us grow...
This is all my opinion obviously and i have been a exec for T+ now for 5 years and have seen great improvement each and every year since joining..Anyway,,bye for now and cant wait for results to be announced,,will let you know when this happens..
Mark
By the way we have a free share option scheme on offer to anyone wanting to join our biz so if interested please let me know...

Here you go guys and gals,,
TELECOM plus PLC
Preliminary results for the year ended 31 March 2004
Telecom plus plc, the UK's leading integrated multi-utility (gas, electricity, telephony, internet), announces preliminary results for the year ended 31 March 2004.
Financial and business highlights:
*Turnover up 41% to #81.8m (2003: #58.0m)
*Profits before tax up 90% to #10.6m (2003: #5.6m)
*Final dividend of 5.5p, total of 10.00p for the full year (2003: 5.75p)
*Earnings per share of 12.2p (2003: 6.8p)
*Subscriber base increased 33% to 178,000 (2003: 134,000)
*Number of services provided increased 39% to 312,000 (2003: 225,000)
Peter Nutting, Chairman, said:
"We have now successfully transformed ourselves from an alternative supplier of fixed-line telephony services into the UK's first low-cost integrated multi-utility offering gas, electricity, fixed telephony, mobile telephony and internet services.
"We are particularly encouraged by the initial response to our introduction of the Utility Warehouse Discount Club concept during October 2003 (a refinement of the new brand we had launched a year earlier), which has led to a marked increase in the average number of services being taken by each new member.
"The combination of our unique multi-service utility proposition, the successful introduction of our new "Club" concept and the exceptional value we are providing to our customers give us great confidence in our ability to deliver sustained growth over the coming years."

Antje I feel the same and I am going to hold unless there is some "bad" news which hasn't hit the market comes out.
I don't think the Gas problem is enough to discredit this company to this degree.
It must be irritating if you are running the company unless of course you wish to buy a few more shares.
