Been trying to daytrade both the FTSE and DJIA on IG Index spreadbetting. Im still learning the ropes just now. Using basic Tech Anal along with news and fundementals. I still need some decent software for my TA. Any suggestions would be welcome. For what its worth DJIA holds resistence and support at round numbers more often than not e.g. 9400/9500 have had quite a bit of success doing that. Markets difficult at the moment but short term buying on the dips on both the FTSE/DJIA will be my strategy.

hello zarif

i swing trade 'try some might say :)' SPX NDX using the spreads, i dont use much in the way of technical indicators to be honest (mainly sentiment) but im looking at the basics to help with entry points (trend/support/resistance breaks/SAR/ROC etc). At the moment were pretty extended on the sentiment front but it has eased over the last few weeks with prices still making gains. hmmm.

ive got the big number in the SPX at around 1015 which could be used as a pivot point.

just started to day trade EUR/USD using spreads at it seems to follow the spot pretty much to the point using (fibs/SAR/ROC). ive heard plenty complain about price skewing and worse on index/stock spreads which can make life very hard for a day trader. DYOR and all that

Hi zarif,

I've just started using deal4free's training software and had an interesting day spreadbetting the DOW for monopoly money. End of day I was up 520 pounds (simulated) which I was pretty happy with considering I am just learning the ropes and was operating mostly on gut feel. Learned a lot about holding my nerve :-)

I've been share trading for a couple of months now so some of the graph patterns were looking familiar.

deal4free's software is excellent. The only other I've tried is E*Trade's CFD interface and I find d4f's easier to use.

Well, after losing several thousand dollars (simulated, I'm glad to say) this morning through random and careless trading, I actually applied some thought to the DOW after 3pm and picked up about $600, watching the trends and support levels and spotting the drop back from the peak.

Patience and nerve are certainly the essential ingredients of this game. I shall spend a fair bit more time practising before going in for real.

I get most of my information from this site. I've just upgraded to Level 2+ and the streaming graphs are very useful. For TA graphs I tend to use Yahoo. Their graphs are loads better than any other I've found, though the display can be a little buggy sometimes.

Why don't all of you stop following the 'Muppet's Index' i.e. the Dow Jones and start following a real trader's index like the S+P or the Nasdaq Composite ??

As for not using technicals and concentrating on sentiment indicators, I'd add bulletin boards and chat rooms to the list of indicators worth following - just do the opposite once everyone is an expert as to why it's going up/down !

All the above sites look ok although get a bit fed up with all the adverts all over the place !

Hi Zarif !

In my experience you get what you pay for ! I've found that on a lot of the free sites the info's not actually that helpful or too vague etc.

For TA I'd start with the charting package on E-trade's system - it's a reasonably basic system - if u want something a bit more advanced then ESignal seems to cover most things. As for financial sites there are tons out there, but most are #### ! 1 i've found useful over time is the harry hindsight service - it's not a tip site - they trade their own money - that's what i like ie not just sitting there spouting crap ! Site has good technical levels and analysis of what's going on. Think they still run a free trial then u have to pay monthly. Having said that - they've saved my skin a few times now so don't mind paying.

Hi Jules
It is no intrusion at all.
I have decided to do it full time and am going to get as much practical experience and advise and help (inc tips that i can). This includes going to seminars (real ones not those Russ whitney and vince stanzionne types) and collaborating with traders online.

Also am not going to go crazy with the amounts of dosh that i stake. Must play it as astrategy game that no matter what the outcome is the whole pot is not gone.

Let me know if there is any seminars going on.I am in Chester, Cheshire.

There is a very good one that iwent to in Bredbury nr stockport By a Fred Stafford who Is to do with Gann Management (Gann levels etc) and it was free including superb lunches and there was no high pressure salesmanship either.

Thir email is: info@gann.co.uk and they have these seminars/workshops in cheshire and london

zarif - 24 Sep 2003 13:55 - 40 of 126

Afternoon everyone:
An intersting article that i came across on my sorties in cyberspace.

Re: The 50% retracement article for the dow:

That level represents the half-way point between the all-time high of 11,722 reached by the Dow ($INDU: news, chart, profile) and its low last year of 7,286. The blue-chip average has been hovering around this level for several weeks now, closing modestly above it on some occasions and below it on others before ending Tuesday's action at 9,576.

As Jack Adamo of Jack Adamo's Insiders Plus newsletter put it recently: "According to Dow Theory, when a bear market rally makes up more than half the decline from the previous top, it is more likely to test the old high than the old low. Obviously then, that halfway mark is an important juncture."

Richard Russell, editor of Dow Theory Letters, adds: "I'm interested to see whether the Dow can pull up and away from 9,504, or whether 9,504 will act as a 'magnet,' and in the end be too much for the Dow to overcome."

I nevertheless have my reservations about this 50 percent retracement principle, for several reasons.

First, it's not clear that either Charles Dow, for whom the Theory is named, or William Peter Hamilton, who spelled out and interpreted the Theory in a series of Wall Street Journal editorials in the first three decades of the last century, ever mentioned this principle.

That's according to Bill James, a Sacramento-based investor and author who has devoted much of his life to studying the Dow Theory. James has been working on a book about the Dow Theory for 20 years, and not only has he not found any reference in Dow's or Hamilton's writings to such a principle, he believes that they would have "quickly discarded" it as being "too much in conflict" with the rest of their Theory.

Apparently, the 50 percent principle was instead introduced by E. George Schaefer, who published a newsletter in the middle years of the last century by the name of Dow Theory Trader.

On one level, of course, it shouldn't matter whether this principle is or isn't part of the Dow Theory. The key question is whether it is a helpful market-timing tool. And I'll get to that in a minute.

But it is important to be clear and precise about what any theory entails, for without that precision it becomes difficult, if not impossible, to judge its effectiveness in a scientific way. For example, if someone told you that the Dow Theory has a poor track record, you wouldn't know whether the Theory that was tracked included the 50 percent principle or not.

All in the interpretation

In any case, the key question is whether the 50 percent principle is effective. Answering this is not as straightforward as you might imagine, however. It depends crucially on how it is interpreted.

For example, Adamo's formulation of the 50 percent principle is true, but only trivially so. Even if the stock market's movements were entirely random, the 50 percent principle would still appear to be true.

After all, if I'm closer to the market's high than to its low, which would be the case once it has retraced 50 percent of the previous bear market, random volatility alone would make it more likely that the market sooner makes it back to that high before making it back to that low.

To study the effectiveness of the 50 percent retracement principle, I therefore measured the stock market's performance following periods in which it had retraced 50 percent of a previous decline. If the principle is in fact useful, then the market should have performed better following such periods than following other bear market periods when it had failed to retrace 50 percent of its decline.

Here's how I designed my study:

First, I identified the 18 major bull market tops that occurred between 1896, when the Dow was created, and today.

Then for each of these market tops, I identified the first date thereafter at which the market had declined by 10 percent. I examined all trade days from then until the market subsequently surpassed its previous top.

Next, I segregated all these dates into two categories. The first contained those on which the Dow Industrials had retraced at least 50 percent of the decline from its previous top; the second contained all others.

For all dates in both categories, I measured the Dow's performance over subsequent periods lasting three, six and 12 months.

What I found was that the market performed almost exactly the same regardless of whether the 50 percent retracement principle had been satisfied.

On average, over the three months following trade dates that satisfied the 50 percent principle, the Dow gained 1.0 percent. Over the three months following trade dates that did not satisfy that principle, the blue-chip barometer on average gained 1.3 percent.

Though this difference is not statistically significant, notice that the market actually performed better following periods in which the 50 percent principle was not satisfied.

Consider next the difference over the subsequent six months. On average following periods in which the principle was satisfied, the Dow gained an average of 2.4 percent, as compared to 2.7 percent following periods in which the principle wasn't satisfied. This again is not statistically significant.

And over the subsequent 12 months, the average gain was identical for dates in both categories: 6.1 percent.

To be sure, my particular formulation of the 50 percent principle is not the only way of interpreting it. But the results of my study suggest that it may not be as effective a market-timing tool as many consider it to be.

And that, in turn, suggests that the 9,504 level may not be all that significant after all.

Dow Jones - Key levels & Trends 26 September 2003

Support breached

The Dow Jones had been up before it moved sharply lower at the close ending the session down 82 points at 9,344 and just a fraction above the long term Fibonacci support at 9,336.
Most importantly the index moved down through the support line and should the Fibonacci just below give way we're most likely heading for 9,000.

Resistance is 9,467 (the lower old support line) and then the upper resistance at 9,671.

Zarif, what is the typical/average contract size that traders trade on an index, I suppose the minimum is 1 per point move? and max 1000 per point?

To test the water I did my first dow contracts ...

5 pound a point contract at 9336 followed by 10 pound a point contract...from 9342...

Up so far....it's quite a rush at first, especially as it moves lightening speeds, stops you walking away...

Your not bold Zarif...? lol...could easily lose ones hair at times...lol..

zarif - 29 Sep 2003 16:53 - 58 of 126

Jules99:
To answer your question i would say this:
a): depending on the company you can put 1p/pt to say 1000 per point -but I dont think it would be wise to do 1000 per point unless u have won the lottery and cghances are u could lose it in one swoop.!!!
Some companies allow 2/pt as minimum.
b): I always open a bet with 2/pt and if my decision is right then i will put my normal size at 15-18/pt. I dont wait for it to make me loads as soon as i am comfortable with the amount gained i will close it even if it then goes( and more often it does) to show a greater gain after closing.
c):Think of it as a game and never risk your whole pot.
d): stick to your stop losses (adjust them etc accordingly) to lock in your profits.
e)be prepared to take small losses dont let the trade carry on especially if it is going against you or u will end up losing a lot more and your profgits financing your losses.

you have to watch the dow as it is volatile and hence the risk/reward ratio is there. They say when in DOW you WillEither Say WOW or OWW!!!!

I like that last comment...so far doing ok...:-)

At this stage 5-15 a point suits me fine, so when the market does go against it's not a huge loss...also using CMC CFD's a/c they always quote a 5 point spread, is is normal...or should it be 4 point spread?

When the DOW closes up tday...it normally has a high % chance of positive effect on the S E asian markets right...You know what I'm thinking today...

what are thoughts...

Monitoring at present gone long again $5 a point from 9320...I'm looking to make..between 100-450 from each hold...which suits me fine at the moment...if in the last hour market closes above 3320 say 3340 I may leave open, in case it opens on a positive note tmor...

I learnt today not to become too freindly or emotionally attached with indices...if theres a profit and u want it then bank it...tomorrows another day to jump in..

most of the move down today was due to the futures falling overnight.
if you don't have a stop loss on overnight you could get royally banjaxed.
be careful and keep up the good work.

Mega Bucks gave us a real time Dow link either on here on the Dow thread

Dear Magician:
Many thanks your comment regarding the dow. Why Do you think that the dow is a"muppets" index and give us your reasons for not trading it. I find it quite good and volatile enough to trade compared to the likes of Ftse which is too docile for me.
Your suggestion of trading the SP500 - Okay give us your suggested entry and exit levels and what are its volatility and motility (momentum)?? I always thought s+p and Nasdaq trailed with the DJia.
Anyway we have an open mind to all trades and are in it to make money and have fun at the same time and "dont fall in love with any share or index".
Look forward to hearing from you.

Hi everybody,
Just closed the long from yesterday and taken out some shorts. I think shall fulfill both before the day is out as we had quite a down slide yesterday. Also this is the end of the 3rd qtr and beginning of the 4th qtr so be careful with your trades and watch the stoplosses etc. Generally if Sept was a good month then Oct seems to be a downer especialy in the opening weeks. So my personal scheme is Shorts will be the main operatives.

Zarif...Hi...been a hell of a day...

Been a good day today, closed 10conrts of my ftse long contracts which I mis calculated yesterday...at 4158...kept 5 pounds long from 4158...

DOW longs closed and gone short at 4359 at $10-P ($10 a point), have a feeling it may close around 4330 or drop back there or finish at 4380...any thoughts?

Still learning though...

where have you gone short from?

Jules99.

zarif - 01 Oct 2003 17:41 - 94 of 126

I Just closed a Long at 9360 - a 100pt gain at 15/pt. I have tagen a short from 9363 DEC DOW and now going to wait. I usually find that in the frequency of trades make more money in shorting than on longs. You are quite right what goes up must come down - unless it flies and sometimes the market does give us a kick in our egos.

jules remember bank as much money as you can and dont get greedy if you are happy with what you have in front of you take it and stay in cash as at the end of the day CASH IS KING.

ZARIF,

Just started on CFD a week ago, been doing a lot reserach into them..go to htpp://www.cmcplc.com/cfd/index.asp

for an insight... allows you to trade on margin...very high risk if you do not know how to money manage...or understand derivatives

My a/c is small, but is more than enough for my purposes...

As I write I think Dow just going Sideways at 9395-9405...Boring...!!!

Open positions now are DAX- long from 9325 - that was a mistake yesterday...Wont be trading DAX again...weird one...thankfully came up today,,,

FTSE long 5 pound-P from 4159...+10...will close out a/m...

DOW 2 shorts in place now...9359 - 9383 which I dont see a major problem...

Just read below what i came across while trawling the net.Be careful of deal4free:

Deal4Free just took 800 out of my account and won't answer the phone?!!
Hey everyone

I can't believe what happened earlier on. My account with Deal4free has dropped from 800-odd quid down to 6.81, and I didn't even have a bet open!!!

What is going on here?! Anyone else had this problem?

I phone Deal4free and they said it was a 'software problem' (after having tried about four times and having them hang up on me). Naturally I was worried that they had gone bust and were shifting the money over to Tel Aviv or something...Apparently not...But I still haven't got the money back in my account yet.

They've admitted that the amount I specified should be in there, but the action hasn't been completed yet. Dodgy or what? I didn't go furious with them, but that is highly irregular. I'm surprised nobody else has posted about this today...
