Exchange steps up activity in China with regional office
The London Stock Exchange announced today that it will open a regional office as part of its strategy for attracting listings from China, which is one of the international exchanges key target markets.
The new office, the Exchanges first in Asia-Pacific, will establish a permanent presence in the region and act as a base for senior Exchange executives who visit the region regularly.
In the coming year, Exchange executives will be in China on a number of trips aimed at building relations within the principal economic and financial centres and raising the companys profile. Among these trips:
Chris Gibson-Smith, the Exchanges Chairman, will be in China in April;
Martin Graham, Director of Market Services and Head of AIM, will be at the seventh International High-tech Expo in Beijing in May; and
Clara Furse, Chief Executive, will be in the region again for a week in September.
As part of this, the Exchange is building its ties with the Shanghai and Shenzhen exchanges, two increasingly important exchanges in the region. In January 2004, the Exchange signed Memoranda of Understanding with both exchanges.
Initially, the office will be based in Hong Kong, which remains the Asian centre for international finance. This office will support the Exchanges efforts to attract Asian companies to Londons international market.
In particular, the Exchange will be targeting the large privatisation deals and other medium to large enterprises in China. Since 2002, the medium to large enterprises, of which there are around 4 million, have accounted for over 50 per cent of Chinese GDP and have experienced a growth rate of between 20 and 50 per cent annually.
The Exchange will also continue to promote dual listings in London and Hong Kong through a single prospectus.
Commenting on the Exchanges plans in the region, Clara Furse said:
"As one of the largest and fastest growing economies in the world, China is a core market for the London Stock Exchange. By the same measure, as the worlds most international financial centre, London should be the natural home for dynamic, growing Chinese companies looking to attract international capital. London has more funds under management than New York and a much more pragmatic system of regulation under which international companies can list and raise money".

Emerging Mkts: china is the main one.
Napolean said that "let the giant sleep for if it wakes up it will shake the world" i am certain that it is just beginning to do so and will give a mighty profit to those that do their homework and get on the bandwagon now.

I am but a novice in this game, but I would offer a word of caution.
It is no secret that a Play of the Week tip by Shares Magazine for a penny share can lead to a 'spike' in that company's SP. I have personal experience of two.
ZOO - bought after the tip and then watched the share settle to a more realistic level, I am still waiting to get back into profit.
IEN - I purchased an interest in this company just after the New Year, (8.8p) and was delighted to see it tipped as a Play of the Week a few weeks later. I monitored the price Thursday and Friday, sure enough it rose to 14.6p. I kept a close eye open the following Monday to see when the price topped out and sold that same day at around 14.5p. Sure enough the SP fell back over the following days to a level of about 11.5p. It has yet to get back to the former levels.
The point I am trying to make is that strong tips from magazines / newspapers can artificially inflate the price. Personally it is unlikely I will act on a media tip again. Once you have the info, so does everyone else and it is probably to late. It may well be that CYC will continue to rise and go from strength to strength, only you can make the decision whether to buy tomorrow or not. DYOR.
Good luck

I tend to agree with your opinion of CYC, but as you clearly understand, it's not necessarily a good idea to act late on a tip, (on the other hand the SP may continue to rise and one has missed the boat, but isn't that the joy and frustration of investing in the stock market?). I must say that the China association is very interesting and I will be monitoring the SP to see what happens and may possibly dip my toe in this week.

I've just got a few as a punt. They look interesting and the model is good, even if there are a couple of failures the potential upside is enormous. Still seriously volatile at the moment though. China is the maket of the moment but is it overheating?

A note of caution from the BBC:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/3522552.stm
The article says SMIC, China's largest chipmaker, has had a rough debut on the NY and HK exchanges. There are concerns about Chinese accounting practices.
Has made me think twice before taking the plunge!

Oakapples142, No problem. It appears that a RNS (must emphasise NOT issued by CYC) was picked up yesterday. Stated "Chinese Wonder" a holding Company will be coming to AIM on/about 30th September 2004 and I gather that SP has gone north because of expected confirming RNS from CYC. As usual DYOR. Good Luck.
