PIVOTS - Daily Indices and FTSE 100 & 250 Stocks (PIVS)

These must NOT be posted or linked to away from the MoneyAM site. Such an operation can be traced.

Otherwise, I hope they are of use to you. They are to me...

excellent info - thanks

little woman - 12 Mar 2004 08:55 - 4 of 362

Thanks BrianTrayda

For anyone who doesn't know, I use these figures to work out stop loss. I believe S3 is a level a share sometimes drops to before going back up. (Having used in the past, only to find the share drops to it, my stop loss kicks in and then the share recovers straight away!) I now use a figure 1-2% below the S3, on the basis if a share breaks S3 then it will continue down.

So far it has worked well, and dispite the current market drop, non of my stop losses have actually kicked in yet. But then I don't seem to be holding any of the companies that have been hit hardest!

BrianTrayda - 12 Mar 2004 10:00 - 5 of 362

LW - all of the levels will have some impact. It's amazing how well they work. I'll drop the occasional chart in to emphasize the point.

If you always keep in mind that everybody has a preset buy/sell cut-and-run number in their head you have to ask how do they get that number. Pivot, trend channels and Fibs are very popular. I've always felt it was a self-fulfilling prophecy scenario.

So far non of my stop losses (to lock in profit) has kicked in despite the falling market. This makes me think this is a tempory fall. (And if it's not, then the stop losses so I will take profits - will eventually kick in!)

BrianTrayda - 15 Mar 2004 11:26 - 8 of 362

FTSE came back to Piv at 4437, but it's having a problem as to where to go next.... Lot of stocks hit main Pivot and bounced. Wait for the Yanks to decide now...

Melnibone, I use them myself and I've posted them in the Traders Room for a long time. It is amazing how reliable they can be. All intraday, but I've done work on longer periods and the results are pretty good, but the further back you go the less reliable they are.Software is my primary business so it was really just a case of tidying up what I had already.Lots of folks help each other in the Traders Room and I was just reciprocating.

Many thanks for info Brian. Used info on FTSE this morning on 8.30 reversal. Noticed program trade blob on chart and then abc setup immediately afterwards to confirm upward movement (been on course with Croc), also 50MA crossed pivot level positive at this point. Took 12 pts and closed for days profit. May be beginners luck, but paid for my skiing holiday next week.

BrianTrayda - 17 Mar 2004 09:32 - 20 of 362

Taboad - they work don't they.;-)Luck or skill, who knows, but well done. :-)ps: For indices always leave a few points each way from the Pivot and then watch the 1 and 5 min candles for confirmation. Think you'll find that damn reliable.

apeman - 26 Mar 2004 01:04 - 40 of 362

Just a note to Brian to confirm that I use Pivots. The information is incredibly useful although, as you advised, the Pivot points are not to be used blindly. For myself I have found them a comforting aid when they confirm my own research on stocks that I am holding or following closely -even when they confirm my own stupidity for forgetting to put a stop loss order in when I knew full-well that one of my holdings was hovering close to what I calculated to be a support level!!!!
I am also finding your info as an invaluable aid when I start researching a potential new holding.
Very many thanks for your work in producing the data and long may it continue -it is highly appreciated.

Melnibone - 26 Mar 2004 09:38 - 41 of 362

Hi Brian,

I use pivots, but not blindly. I use them as targets for what
I think is going to happen to a stock within the constraints
of the FTSE movements which are in turn controlled by the
US indices movements and pivots.

Hope that makes sense.

Melnibone.

Brian,

I think something may be wrong with your spreadsheet.

There seems to be some wrong closing prices and pivot points.

Eg: Take a look at AVZ and SBRY. Your close prices and consequent
pivots seem to be nearer Fridays opening prices, not the closing
prices?

Has some of the sheet not updated correctly, or something?

There seems to be only a few folks regularly looking at this here in Investors Room. Of those that do, do you also have access to the Traders Room? Not much point in updating it both sides for such a small number.

It's also true that Pivots are good for single days, and "Investors" think of much longer time frames...

little woman - 18 Apr 2004 13:20 - 87 of 362

As I've said before I use this thread to work out the level to set my stop losses.

I know Brians asked before, but can I ask again - could you post to say you look at this thread.

I do have access to the Traders Room, and asked if this thread could be put on the Investors room, after I trying to explain to someone about PP, and how I use them to set my stop losses.

Melnibone - 18 Apr 2004 17:11 - 88 of 362

Hi Brian & little woman.

I look at this thread most days and do not have access to the
Traders Room.

I have nothing against the Traders Room, it's a free country and
if folk want to have a private area that they pay for then that's fine.

I just don't see why I should pay to post my thoughts, and I can't really
see why other folk would want to pay to read them anyway. :-(

As for paying to read other folk's thoughts, my head is too full of my
own without paying to read other's. ;-)
And, anyway, if my Delorean doesn't work, then why should their's. :-))

To me, this is similar to having a drink and a chat in a cyberpub.
Share thoughts, views, experiences and sometimes have a joke or two.

I've learned a few things that have modified some of my views here, and
maybe some of my views have done the same for others.
It's what sharing and helping is all about on these boards.

It's kind of you to share your work in the Investors' Room, but if it's
causing you a lot of extra work for too small a readership then I will fully
understand if you revert to only posting it in the Traders' Room where I'm
led to believe there is a larger community.

I personally feel it would be a shame if quality posters and information
were restricted to a private room. Quality posts and information will
attract people to this site, but only if they can read them.
Increased footfall on the site will attract advertisers and the
increased traffic would generate more traders taking up some of
the quality premium services that MaM offers.

But who am I to tell people how to manage their business.
I'll be E-Mailing Alan Greenspan next and giving him tips
on how to sort out the World's economy. :-))

Melnibone.

BryanTrada I dont get the 'export to Excel' option when I right click on the table. I'm using W98 so maybe that is the problem. Any suggestions?

Jolly useful data though.

apeman - 06 May 2004 01:49 - 125 of 362

snoball -it doesn't work with XP either. Simply right-click in the scrollable area, left-click "select all" and then on keyboard "ctrl c" or "edit copy" using mouse in the usual Windows way and you will then be able to paste all the info into excel, or wherever else takes your fancy.

For the Excel Export you need to install the Excel Web Import optional item. I'll post a link later on.

Thread on 'the other site' regarding the Goldline system. The program downloads the days closing numbers from the Goldline system then calculates and tells you at what level to buy, sell, move stops,or hold.

The poster started in Feb and has now lost a fair whack plus the cost of the system.

Interesting thread I thought.

No such thing as a "winning" system. If there was the whole universe would use it and we'd all be billionaires..... It's just tools in the toolbox. That's it!The best system I do know of is Spaceman's "Concorde Method" ;)

brianboru - 06 May 2004 14:13 - 130 of 362

Yes Brian I agree and as has been pointed out on the other thread one needs the market to be in a trend and not going sideways for the 'system' to work.

i have just a question, from a relatively newbie. Could you explain the different colours, i.e red, blue etc.

Do you have anything similar for DOW, S&P500, Nasdaq100?

Many thanks
Lee

BrianTrayda - 20 Jun 2004 15:40 - 189 of 362

Lee: It's based on the closing price. That number falls somewhere within the pivot values and the red is if it's below the central point or blue if it's above. You need to see the full trading day range of the individual stock to see what the actual relevance.

38 - 21 Jun 2004 14:38 - 194 of 362

Spookily Good. Check out Desire Pet Today. Stormed up through R1, hit R2, just breaking through by a gnats b', then dropped back down and puttered about around the R1 level. Even if nothing else (and I am sure that there is much accuracy in it) it provides a great framework for thinking about the stock price.

If I hadn't mentioned it before (and I am a sporadic poster at best) thanks for posting up this info.

BrianTrayda - 21 Jun 2004 21:59 - 195 of 362

38: They are uncannily reliable. That means a) lots of folks follow them, b) the computer programs use them as well. Just look at a lot of intraday charts (5 min candles) and you'll see. Not always on the money, but not bad..

Had a couple of requests to explain colouring:

Look at the closing price - it has to appear in the Pivot range somewhere. So the colour coding of the Pivot values reflect where the closing price is. Below central Pivot is red, above central Pivot is blue.

(Just noticed there's a small gremlin on one of the lower colourings.)

They are visual clues as to where the closing price may indicate the "sentiment" of the stock [think about closing auctions] and it's direction. There's a awlful lot of visual clues based on the pivot colouring and the price/vol rise/fall and it's a matter of looking at, and recognizing, the patterns. The idea is to just let you do a quick visual scan to look for any anomalies to add to your watch list.

Pretty good description in there..In a nutshell they give you a pretty good entry and exit point in a stock, but always use a secondary indicator to make sure of course.Don't forget, there's no such thing as a "sure bet" in life. morning BT,JJ50,Apeman et al.
The dow rallied yesterday. I think it will today as usually does around expiry time (tomorrow is double withching).
Aslo jobless claims out today at 13.30gmt leading indicators at 15.00 and philly fed at 17.00hrs.
So hopefully a volatile market where we can scalp.

There's not so many here in the Investors Room that use them, but those that do are welcomed. Guess that's because they are daily, so only good for the buy/sell day and not the in between.
