A late sell off in US equities as traders worry over leaving long positions open with the terrorist threat.

Woolworths reported an inline profit of 69.8 million pounds and said it would refit 50 stores and downsize its out-of-town big W format to further improve profits which rose 32 percent during the year.

Barratt Developments easily beat expectations with a 35 percent rise in first-half profit to 142.6 million pounds and said demand remained robust despite UK interest rate increases. The interim dividend was set at 6.9 pence with the final dividend seen up around 20 percent.

Ted Baker fashion chain posted a slightly higher than expected 26% rise in annual profits to 13.9 million pounds and said it was confident of another year of growth with retail sales up 8.4 percent in the first seven weeks.

Paladin Resources oil said it planned to invest around 75 million pounds to boost production and reserves as it reported a 28% rise in annual profit to 84.8 million pounds on turnover up 58 percent to 268.2 million pounds.

Paragon home loans firm said trading remained strong in its first-mortgage and consumer finance divisions and in line with its expectations.

BT moved to cut line rental and call charges as it simplifies its tariff structure to counter mounting competition.

Morning all

Nice start to the day! The big question is: will it continue!

Melnibone - 24 Mar 2004 09:13 - 6 of 38

Morning all.

It seems pretty obvious now that terrorism is the problem
with the markets.

Judging by the way all the markets are going back to flat at the
end of the day, traders are just closing positions at the end of each
session. Croc's chart is showing a slow drift down.

Don't intend to fight this, so I took my LGEN profit on that last
bounce and went flat. Will just follow the market now and scalp profit.

If there is another attack, or God forbid another 9/11, I see no point
in running the risk of being caught long no matter how Bullish my
view of the market is.

If you can't beat 'em, join 'em and play safe. There's always tomorrow
if your pot is still intact.

GSK testing the 1050 level again.

SKP close to testing the 60p level on very low volume.

Not tempted for longs in the current climate.
Fear is starting to grow in the market imho.

I was wondering about the end of the tax year. It's less than 2 weeks away and I must admit I'm "tidying up" my portfolio at the moment in preparation! I'm wondering how many others are doing the same - or are people not that organised!

Melnibone - 24 Mar 2004 09:54 - 9 of 38

Can't help you there, little woman, these days LTBH means
holding overnight for me. :-))

The last post seemed to chop off what I was saying.
Here's the rest of it again.

Failure to hold above 4300 is now important to the FTSE, and if it breaks
the PnF is showing a possible decline target of 4150.
Sorry to be so gloomy, but I've learned from the past it pays to listen to the market and
not stick with your own ideas if they go against the evidence of your eyes.

to post these PnF charts without it.

Can anyone help me regarding RNS regulations. RTD released an RNS after the close yesterday relating to trades made in the last week of Feb upto the 1st of March. Hence the RNS is 22 days after the transactions. Does anyone know what the rules are on RNS, is there a specific timescale they have to operate within? Sorry to be offtrack but this one has got to me!!!

Melnibone - 24 Mar 2004 16:42 - 16 of 38

I'm sick of this. I've had to log off twice today
with someone doing port scans on my computer.

The last one, Sygate warned me, was that some file sharing
program was trying to gain access.

As Brian said last time, if I log off I change my IP address
and throw them off the scent, so I'm beginning to wonder if this
is one of the sites I use that is trying to gather some sort
of information.

No matter how often I clean my computer, I keep picking up
tracking cookies. I'm going to start checking my cookie folder
each time I change sites and see if I can find out if it's one
particular site. If I do it's the last time I go there.

I will not have a company invading my privacy and trying to track
my movements.

Kayak - 24 Mar 2004 16:50 - 17 of 38

Melnibone, the whole point of your firewall is that it has stopped the "attacks". You don't need to log off, the firewall is there to protect you. That having been said, the attacks are very unlikely to have been directed at you. They normally originate from other PCs on the Internet which have been infected by viruses and are trying to infect others by scanning for all connected PCs within a range of IP numbers. Turn off the notification feature of Sygate and don't worry about them.

As for the cookies, if you upgrade to version 6.0 of Internet Explorer there are plenty of options to disable cookies, but quite frankly you don't need to worry about them either.

Melnibone - 24 Mar 2004 17:20 - 18 of 38

Thanks for that Kayak, I was starting to get annoyed there.
I'll try and chill a bit and let the firewall do it's job.

Citywire have a item on GSK today.

They're saying much the same as us. Good LTBH play for a 2 year
investment horizon but timing needs to be watched for your entry
point to maximise potential profits.

I keep getting "security" e-mails from "banks" I don't bank with! I wonder how I keep getting picked?

Melnibone - 24 Mar 2004 18:56 - 21 of 38

You're not alone little woman, I get several of them a day.

I've also lost count of the number of people who think I need
to buy Viagra or want me to view questionable photos.

I don't bother to open any of them. Straight to the recycle bin
and promptly deleted along with all the attachments that come
with them.

are your security setttings suitable? via Tools/internet options/security.
I know I am speaking to experienced users but sometimes settings need to be adjusted. I always say go for the simplest things first. Hope this helps.
Oh and by the way I have been subjected to a lot of port scans recently and emails with attachments containing viruses, these have been dealt with by Macafee and blueyonder respectively.

Barratt Developments says no final div

LONDON (Thomson Financial) - Barratt Developments Plc. said it will not pay
a final dividend for 2007-2008 as it announced a cost reduction programme
intended to save 40 million pounds in annualised cost savings, the closure of
two divisions and the loss of around 1,200 jobs.
A review indicates that the group will incur a pre-tax write-down in the
value of land and work-in-progress of approximately 85 million pounds for the
financial year ended 30 June 2008, the housebuilder said.
Forward sales have been "significantly impacted" by the UK housing downturn,
and stood at 0.7 billion pounds, of which 539 million pounds was contracted, at
1 July 2008, down from 1.41 billion on a like-for-like basis in 2007, of which
866 million was contracted.
