04/05 Football season (FOOT)

Scripophilist - 12 Aug 2004 11:26

I am signing up to the following if any body wishes to follow me. I will update and post the league table on this thread. Did ok last season but joined late and was unable to catch up the leaders. Here's hoping for a better result this season!!

---------

http://www.bbc.co.uk/fivelive/challengelawro/index.shtml

The new Premiership season kicks off on Saturday and this year BBC Radio Five Live's Challenge Lawro will be bigger and better than ever! What's more - we've also teamed up with BBC Sport's Football Focus. Tune into BBC One every Saturday from noon for the Premiership pre-match build-up and to hear the presenters give their predictions on the weekends' Premiership action.

Win with Challenge Lawro

The prizes aren't bad either - the Manager of the Month is invited onto Five Live's Drive programme to give Peter Jane and Mark, their footie predictions...and also awarded one of our shiny new Manager of the Month medals. At the end of the season, the player who has scored the most points, will be presented with a special Challenge Lawro trophy by the man himself. They will also be offered the chance to come into our London studios to be a pundit with Mark Lawrenson!

Last season, over 120,000 people registered to play Challenge Lawro. If you think you can take on your friends to be the champion of champions, then get playing now!

Kivver - 13 Aug 2004 09:36 - 2 of 213

Yes. i signed up last year, i would recommend it. It is quick easy and good fun, but not as easy as it seems.

Scrip,... how would you like to come back with 3 recommendations for this weekend i will as well?

Kivver - 13 Aug 2004 10:03 - 3 of 213

Blackburn 1 WBA 0 West Brom have a much stronger defence and wil not let many goals in.

Portsmouth 0 Birmingham 1 A much strenghted blues team this year.

Villa 2 Southampton 0 All is not well at Saints this year. Beattie unlikely to play.

daves dazzlers - 13 Aug 2004 10:07 - 4 of 213

great day if your a red, thank god it looks owen`s going yep pee.

Kivver - 13 Aug 2004 12:13 - 5 of 213

Football is now clearly all about money, i have been going to watch my team for 30 years. Well it is now time for me to think about money and i am not going anymore. Why should i spend 40 quid (1 ticket, not thinking about the kids, a pie and a pint), yes 40 QUID, so these jumped up idiots can drive around in porches, ferrari's, and earn more money than they can ever spend on hloidays girls and golf. The british puplic have got to wake to this rip off. The Man u team could not even bother to walk over to the fans that travelled all the way to Romania. Its time to bring them back into the real world. Think about your nurses, emergency services, teachers, doctors, binmen etc. You never hear of a footballer having to wait for a scan or an operation. Sorry, but i needed that moan. What do you think?

Scripophilist - 13 Aug 2004 12:55 - 6 of 213

Well the kids and wife stopped me from going a few years back. Sometimes its a bit soul searching when your team is not a top flight team and you spend daft amounts following them!! That said I do go when I can for the atmosphere and to shout at the ref a wonderful tonic for a stressful week.

Kivver I sort of agree with your selections. BTW, I'm a Southampton fan!

If any body is on Challenge Lawro give me your user ID and I will post up a table.

Kivver - 13 Aug 2004 13:15 - 7 of 213

Sorry about that scrip, do you think beattie will go? The ironic thing is i've watched B'ham City for 26 years through some of the worst games you could ever imagine, beaten by Altringham, kidderminster and many more. I spent thousands watching home and away all across the country at grounds like swindon, Hull, Stockport. It is such shame now they have reached the promised land i am not going to go anymore. 40 quid a ticket is a disgrace. That could be some peoples disposable income for the week. btw my user name is Kivver on lawro.

Scripophilist - 13 Aug 2004 17:17 - 8 of 213

Thanks, will add you.

No need to apoligise! I watched my first match in 1974 when I was a nipper. Remember trudging to the ground and paying 1.50 to stand on the terraces, oh how times have changed! Blame the Taylor report for 40 tickets, not forgetting the incredible wage bills!

Last season IMO (some may disagree) Philips looked as sharp as a knife towards the end of the season and Beattie as blunt as a piece of wood. I remember watching the Villa game at home and in the warm up Philips was burying the ball in the net from all over the pitch. Beattie stepped up and blasted the ball over the bar. The difference was stark. Maybe just a confidence thing?

I'm not sure sure we would miss him but it depends what Sturrock has up his sleeve.

I remember watching Crouch in the Villa game and laughing because he looked such a donkey. Then we go and sign him! I couldn't believe it.

Sould be an interesting season.

No longer is our focus staying up, it's making sure we finishing ahead of Pompey. That's all that matters, sod Europe!

Congrats to Dave37 who is off to a flyer. As for my alter ego, now down in 170ish place from 26th. I can't believe even a small number of people have got so many points. The leaders are on 26!!

Kivver - 16 Aug 2004 00:07 - 16 of 213

Cant understand why people are having trouble logging on. It is case sensitive, so you have to write down exactly how you sign on.

I see Southampton are off to a good start. Is this a record, Sacking your manager after only two games. Unreal. I saw on Betfair the odds were 2-1 for him to leave. Never guessed it would be so soon. Next up Graeme Souness.

Kivver - 23 Aug 2004 23:31 - 19 of 213

Cheers scrip. Well its now obvious what the problem is at st marys some bloke called rupert lowe. To come out say the board run the club and two days later say he has gone because of media attention seems a bit weak to me. 10 managers in 10 years is that a record? the love affair with glen hoddle, will it continue.

Juzzle - 24 Aug 2004 01:13 - 20 of 213

Soon be able to field a 'Southampton Ex-managers Eleven' ;o)
Gerard Houllier in the frame after Wigley?

Scripophilist - 24 Aug 2004 08:22 - 21 of 213

I think the press are going OTT though. Jones had to leave, Hoddle left to go to Spurs, Grey was never a replacement and Strachen had had enough. So record not as bad as it seems.

stubax - 24 Aug 2004 10:28 - 22 of 213

Kivver, I"m a Palace supporter, hopefully my portfolio won"t do as badly as them this season, I"ve lost count of how many managers we have had in the last 10 years, Steve Coppell came back 3 times !

Kivver - 24 Aug 2004 12:29 - 23 of 213

Yes and you had my hero Trevor Francis managing you, sorry about that, he did an ok job for my team bham city. But he was a fantastic player, the hairs used to stand up on the back of your neck when he got the ball. I was also very sad to see AJ leave and he seems to be doing a good job for you.

brianboru - 24 Aug 2004 14:59 - 24 of 213

Cheeky Trev was still a fabulous player right to the end with Sheff Wednesday - definitely in my tep ten English players.

stubax - 24 Aug 2004 16:43 - 25 of 213

I would rather forget about his time as our manager, you definately got the better part of the deal ( Steve Bruce ). Trev was a fantastic player though, we could do with someone like him to help us against Chelsea tonight. AJ is one of the hardest working players I"ve ever seen, if they were all like him we may stand a chance tonight.

Kivver - 24 Aug 2004 17:20 - 26 of 213

Brian - I think Francis was playing for sheff wednesday when he scored a fantastic hat trick against our arch enemies 'the v***a' (no swearing) at the age of about 36.

Stubax - i think you have to be realistic about palace in the prem, they have done fantastically well just to get there. It is a massive step up and you cant replace a whole team. Just enjoy the year and the chance to see great players. Hope you stay up but it will be hard job even with new players. That Routledge looks a bit handy. Better to be like West Brom rather than Leeds, Bradford, Sheff Wed, Barnsley etc.

Got you in the table now! I started late last season but made up ground all the way through. You are not that far adrift. A few decent results and you will be well up there.

Scripophilist - 01 Sep 2004 15:39 - 38 of 213

As a Southampton fan I can safely say this is one of the most bizarre starts to a season I can ever remember. What ever next.

Kivver - 01 Sep 2004 17:08 - 39 of 213

Told you that Rupert Lowe was the problem. He really has gone off his rocker!! Or is it Beattie and Phillips hit the ball over the bar so much he ought to get a rugby coach in lol. 'oh when the saints go mauling in'.

Scripophilist - 01 Sep 2004 17:12 - 40 of 213

I think we should adopt "Swing Lowe" as our chant.

Kivver - 01 Sep 2004 22:27 - 41 of 213

lol, swing him high more like.

Flackwell Vialli - 04 Sep 2004 10:02 - 42 of 213

If you guys don't mind a late entrant just registered.

CFC supporter - Registered as Carefree.

My target for the season is simply to beat that smug g*t Lawro. Judging his knowledge of football, 10 weeks of posting should be enough.

Scripophilist - 04 Sep 2004 20:40 - 43 of 213

Can't seem to get it to recognise your nickname, you may have another log on name or the nickname is case sensitive.

Scrip - Just logged in to check - My nickname is Carefree and incredibly without kicking a ball I've got 13 points - Lawro has no chance !

Do I need to register in your league as the system has defaulted me to my own league ?

Scripophilist - 08 Sep 2004 20:41 - 45 of 213

Wales match is crazy tonight the ref is bonkers. Don't think I have ever seen anything like it!! Thanks to DeFoe I am well up on the England match and it's only half time!! Have greened up in case England mess up. Now I can "relax" for the rest of the match. If an England fan can do such a thing nowadays.

040908%20-%20Poland%20vs%20England%20-%2

ptholden - 08 Sep 2004 22:22 - 46 of 213

Scrip,

Watched most of the England Game, but had to keep switching over to see how many more players that lunatic had sent off!! Great result for NI and England though. England, however look good going forward, with the exception of Owen, who really is nothing like the player he was, but look v dodgy at the back sometimes. Same old England.

Whatever, a win is a win and judging by how poorly Wales played and defended against 9 men, roll on Old Trafford.

PTH

Scripophilist - 09 Sep 2004 08:51 - 47 of 213

England never seem to inspire you with confidence do they? But based upon what I have seen of the others in the qualifying group I can't see England not qualifying.

ptholden - 09 Sep 2004 09:05 - 48 of 213

Scrip

The Match Odds table you have posted (44/46). What does all that mean?

PTH

Scripophilist - 09 Sep 2004 10:20 - 49 of 213

It means that at half time I had worked a position that meant I would win 574 whatever happened.

ptholden - 09 Sep 2004 10:40 - 50 of 213

Scrip,

Whilst delighted you came out on top, you haven't really answered the question!!

Scripophilist - 09 Sep 2004 12:56 - 51 of 213

Sorry mis-interpreted the request!!

The table you see are the odds at half time in this match. In the back column poland are 16-1 to win the match, England 1.36 to 1. If you divide one by digital odds you get the implied probability so 1/1.36=73.5%

If you lay an event you are saying that it will not happen so I could lay England at half time and the odds would have swung in my favour when the polish equalised. The odds jumped back up to around 2 when the Polish goal went in.

ptholden - 09 Sep 2004 13:11 - 52 of 213

Thanks Scrip

Man City to win 2-1, (they've got to lose some time!), but as you can see that I'm propping up the table, I'm not very good at this, although I did have a late start to the season.

Kivver, You are correct I went back in and edited out my previous post. It was a good weekend for me. The results all "looked" quite predictable to me this weekend. I doubt if I will repeat that performance again though odds are massive to get so many correct scores in one go.

Kivver - 28 Sep 2004 19:14 - 77 of 213

yes well done, i tried to be clever last night and thought blackburn may scrape a draw with a new manager and all that. But with mat jansen playing on the left wing you may as well play with 10 players. I do not understand playing plyers out of their natural position.

And i dont get paid 300 grand year.

Scripophilist - 02 Oct 2004 11:49 - 79 of 213

A difficult set of matches to predict this weekend many that could go either way. I think 50% of preditors will do well and 50% not so well. I haven't a clue about the majority of the matches.

Flackwell Vialli - 03 Oct 2004 09:08 - 80 of 213

I'd agree with you there Scrip (as results to date are bearing out for me.)

IMO this year we have a league where the majority are of a similar standard from about 6th position down to all bar the bottom 3. Predictions are thus much more difficult, even on a Win-Lose-Draw basis, never mind the scores.

Still I normally call the Arsenal result right each week.

yes and me, had newcastle down for a 2-1 win, 1 goal out again.

Scripophilist - 18 Oct 2004 13:34 - 90 of 213

I think the match tonight is a difficult one. I fancy Spurs to shade it.

proptrade - 18 Oct 2004 13:36 - 91 of 213

nope, i think they fall down tonight and end the fluke start to the season...in all seriousness i think spurs lose 2-0.

Scripophilist - 18 Oct 2004 15:20 - 92 of 213

On the long term form I think Pompey could shade it but the short term form which is more reliable seems to point to Spurs. With Robbie Keane looking more interesting I think a tight match with somebody bundling the ball into the back net in the second half.

Now watch this prediction go totally to pot!!

Kivver - 18 Oct 2004 15:22 - 93 of 213

spurs to win one nil

proptrade - 18 Oct 2004 16:00 - 94 of 213

its just that after the chelsea loss against a team they should have dominated, i think spurs will play "boring boring" tactics but do something stupid to let Pompey through.

gut feel, its all i've got but is stand by spurs going down 2-0.

its time that premiership teams (read Chelsea, Spurs) start to remember that they are mean't to play the game as opposed to keep 10 men and their dog behind the ball for 98.7% of the time.

As a Gooner I am blessed to be watching and supporting some of the best football in the modern era. up the gunners.

Scripophilist - 18 Oct 2004 17:10 - 95 of 213

As a Southampton support I am cursed to be watching and supporting some of the worst football in my modern memory, sack the board. Less than two seasons after being on a bit of a high I am once again wondering why my loyalty stays with my birth town.

Scripophilist - 18 Oct 2004 17:12 - 96 of 213

I've wondered for years what it must be like to watch a team that wins a lot. I remember back to 1982/83 when we finished second and only failed to win the league by three points. But back then most footballers, and managers, were English and it only cost 1.50 to stand on the terraces.

Kivver - 18 Oct 2004 17:30 - 97 of 213

you are the lucky one scrip even though it may not seem it. My team bham city have been out the top flight for about 18 years and ive had to watch some of the most dire matches you could believe esp late 80 early 90 in div 3. You have not gone down yet. I still feel there are 3 teams worse than you. And it is really bad luck to have so many good players injured, any team would find it hard to cope with that.

Yes it was weird Chelsea moaning about negative football when they seem to take the bus to all away games and park it in front of the goal.

Scripophilist - 18 Oct 2004 20:20 - 98 of 213

Changed my mind before the kick off, gone for a narrow Pompey win.

Flackwell Vialli - 18 Oct 2004 20:54 - 99 of 213

As a CFC fan through and through I am absolutely amazed at comments about taking the bus to Man City - Did you see the game? Have you seen the stats? Was that a defensive display?

For those that didn't watch Eider, and Lampard had several chances to pull one back. What we lacked at the weekend was a proper finisher in form.

Ironic that after decades of "boring, boring Arsenal" we now have a Gooner on board talking about attacking football.

At this rate we may yet see one talk about fair play and sportsmanship. Mind you thats probably stretching things too far.

Scripophilist - 18 Oct 2004 21:29 - 100 of 213

I didn't see the match but. I had a look at the stats and it looked to me as though Man City were lucky. I don't think they had a single corner in the whole match and Chelsea had six and 11 shots on target I think.

Scripophilist - 19 Oct 2004 10:44 - 101 of 213

Within shooting distance of the top 180!! Just need a bit of luck to breach the lower boundries.

Had a nose at the results so far this season. Many more draws than normal at the moment. Don't know if this is something structural or just a blip. Interesting to note though.

Point taken about Chelsea v Man City but surely you dont get that many 1-0 wins by playing open attacking football.

Watched the first half of spurs v pompey and it should have been 5-0 to pompey, spurs were absolute rubbish (apart from robinson who looks class), how have they possibly got that high in the league?

Flackwell Vialli - 21 Oct 2004 19:14 - 103 of 213

Kivver - Faid comment. Chels at the moment are lacking a proper striker (Drogs - injured, Gronks - off form, Mutu - stoned, and Kezman yet to adapt to England/Chelsea). Why we let your boys take Forsell I'll never truly know - I'd bring him back asap, and let him learn the game with us.

The newspaper talk is of Cole returning, but I'm not sure whether he's an answer or not.

Re;your team - I expected better things from them than I've seen to date - Whats wrong ? You have a good squad on paper.

Scripophilist - 22 Oct 2004 18:00 - 104 of 213

Have placed a nine fold accumulator on this weekend. Will be amazed if it comes in!!

Scripophilist - 24 Oct 2004 00:53 - 105 of 213

Unfortunately Bolton messed me up but I got the other four results correct. The four tomorrow are a little more difficult IMO.

Only one point outside the top 180 now!! Desperate to produce a result tomorrow but such a hard set of matches qqqqqqto predict.

ptholden - 24 Oct 2004 19:07 - 106 of 213

Well, if any one wants to make money out of Premiership football, ask me what my predictions are and bet on the opposite! Had both the Newcastle and Man Utd scores correct until the last minute goals.

An excellent weekend for Carefree. If Rooney had not ruined it would have had a six pointer in the Man U match but had to settle for two. I guess I should have figured Man U would have a penalty and score in extra time!!

scrip - I only went and forgot to my entries (i am fool) but stiil got 3 points due to the nil nil draw between my team and yours. Did you watch the game? pretty poor quality all round but i think saints had the 2 best chances. I felt sorry for the viewers watching.

Noticed a big drop off in attendances this year in the premiership, i am not surprised if players earning 30 grand a week cannot string 3 passes together. in the blues saints game there were only 3 shots on target and they were pretty pathetic. David Dunn ballooned it over the top from 10 yards, what do these players do in training all week? Did you know arsenal have not sold out in one home game yet this season?

Flackwell Vialli - yes i was expecting us to do much better too, but i am now convinced some players dont care that much, they earn an absulote fortune and spend half their time posing, but i can see the backlash coming. i have been going for 30 years and this is first season where i am just going to pick and choose a few matches, at 45 quid a game (like the man u) can you blame me.

Scripophilist - 25 Oct 2004 08:54 - 109 of 213

Was a pretty dreadfull experiance wasn't it. I had it down for a 0-0 but have this habit of not trying to predict draws so went for a hopefull Southampton win but on the basis of the match can't see how either team are likley to score in the immediate future.

Flackwell Vialli - 25 Oct 2004 19:34 - 110 of 213

Kivver - Know where you're coming from with the prices. At CFC we've had it for yrs but now that RA is in charge, things are looking better on that front. For example, West Ham is 20 adult this week (I can't go though !) and 10 for kids.

Prices aren't so bad when you see the players put the effort in, but we've had a few that would make you cringe (Bogarde, Veron, and even Crespo, who I like, spring to mind).

Didn't realise your team was so expensive to watch - Is your seat padded ?

Scrip - Yes, a good weekend for me, summed up in 2 results CFC ("Boring, Boring Chelsea") 4 Blackburn 0, and the result from OT yesterday. (God bless those Mancs).

Kivver - 28 Oct 2004 00:34 - 111 of 213

Just been to the fulham v Bham game 10 quid adults 1 quid for the kids. Blues 15 shots no goals, fulham 2 shots, 1 goal. yorke and heskey please practice your shooting. Nice one for the prices.

Gets back to the car down a dead end street at the arse end of birmingham with no street lights, a few industrial buildings all locked up. A place where i have parked the car many times before. I promise you would be scared to death to walk down there on your own. NO RESIDENTIAL buildings down the street or anywhere near. SO WHY DO WE GeT A 60 PARKING ticket. I swear they must have driven down there, it is nothing but SPITEFUL, NASTY and UNWARRENTED. Its these kinds of things that make Britain great, WELL DONE Birmingham City Council, you make me proud to live in this great city.

Scripophilist - 28 Oct 2004 09:27 - 112 of 213

Crazy!!

I didn't bother going to watch Southampton vs Colchester last night regardless of price!!!

Kivver - 28 Oct 2004 10:03 - 113 of 213

Scripophilist - 28 Oct 2004 10:32 - 114 of 213

Scripophilist - 29 Oct 2004 17:48 - 115 of 213

Numbers of goals could be an interesting bet in the Arsenal vs Southampton match this weekend!!

Kivver - 29 Oct 2004 17:58 - 116 of 213

i think arsenal will have a poor game and only core about 3, sorry scrip but i think your going to get the backlash. my team will also suffer because little AJ will want to show we shouldn't have let him go. If morrison was worth 4 mill what does that make aj worth?

Kivver - 30 Oct 2004 18:29 - 117 of 213

What a mad day! bad luck scrip i really felt for the players sounds like you were the best team.

Blues 30 attacks no goals, palace in the blues half once 1 goal, great goal 2 sadly missed well done AJ always a favourite down st andrews. Well done pompey!

Flackwell Vialli - 31 Oct 2004 09:12 - 118 of 213

I'd echo Kivvers sentiments on Soton - Sounds like too much injury time was played from what was said on Sky. Ref must have mixed Wenger and Fergie up.

Just goes to show that "its a funny old game"

Scripophilist - 31 Oct 2004 15:52 - 119 of 213

When ever you play at a big ground you expect a penalty and a last minute goal, always. Therefore you need to be two or three up in the last minute to have any chance of winning IMHO!!

Kivver - 07 Nov 2004 13:03 - 126 of 213

i've just completely lost my begiiners luck touch. It is pure luck at the mo. Liverpool should have been 6 (inc 2 penalties) up before birmingham scored and im a blues fan. Charltons away form is terrible yet win. I suppose a southampton draw should have been banker but I really thought they would have got there first win this week.

Fulham have not won away all season, will they upset the form book today?

Scripophilist - 07 Nov 2004 20:02 - 127 of 213

Cheers Scrip - That's probably put the mockers on my little run !

Good weekend for my boys, with Newcastle matching us, maybe shading it for an hour. On comes Bridge etc, and with the extra width the last half an hour was all ours. If Kezman hadn't required a goal, then I suspect that we would have got more, as clearly his team mates were doing all they could to help him off the mark, and missing easier chances in the meantime.

Hope this prooves to be the catalyst for more, though I still have my worries about him. How he's got a better record then Ruud is beyond me at present. - Still time will tell.

Scripophilist - 06 Dec 2004 20:04 - 151 of 213

Kezman is very good at hitting the woodwork. When he stepped up for that penalty I couldn't believe he chipped it.

Chelsea do look the biz at the moment and Arsenal appear to be fading fast. Should be a good scrap at the top from now till the end of the season. I think Chelsea's test will come when they have there first dodgy run. How they respond to that set back will be the defining moment.

Kivver - 07 Dec 2004 00:18 - 152 of 213

Aresnal got just the confidence buider they needed against that shambles i support. We ahve just completely lost our way and its hard to see how we will get out of it, because the rest of the team know they are wasting their time because we have noboddy to put the ball in the net, Oh well a couple of og's against the vile will do us the world of good.

Scripophilist - 08 Dec 2004 13:32 - 155 of 213

All depends on the scoring power of the team they are playing really.

Kivver - 08 Dec 2004 15:23 - 156 of 213

Kivver - 12 Dec 2004 16:26 - 157 of 213

i cant believe we beat the V***a it could have been 5, we were awesome the fist half. Turning point maybe. Listening to the match chelsea just equalised, hope this is the final score.

Scripophilist - 12 Dec 2004 22:19 - 158 of 213

I thought it would have been a draw, simply on the basis that teams are usually up for it on these sorts of occasions. Surprised to see it come in as a win for Brum though as they have been pretty poor of late. Not as much of a surprise as conceding two goals in the last two minutes for my team though!!!

Flackwell Vialli - 13 Dec 2004 20:06 - 161 of 213

Good performance by all blues over the weekend - Everton, Birmingham and Chelsea. Still puzzled by the midlands team though, as how on earth can they play like that one week, and struggle nearly every other?

Everton continue to surprise (me at least), when is their bubble going to burst?

Xmas is usually a turning point for many clubs, so the next month could prove very interesting.

Meanwhile hope our neighbours do us all a favour tonite, and halt the advancing Mancs.

Kivver - 14 Dec 2004 11:27 - 162 of 213

Good draw for fulham. What did you think of Henry's goal. The rules say it was a good goal. Teams have got to wake up to this! Still shouldnt stop you from winning the league though!

Scripophilist - 14 Dec 2004 12:06 - 163 of 213

At the end of the day if you foul somebody you get a free kick. You should be allowed to take it when you wish else were is the advantage in getting a free kick? Get somebody to stand in front of the ball if you wish to halt it. There is a good explanation on the BBC sport web site which sums it up pretty well.

AdieH - 14 Dec 2004 12:19 - 164 of 213

Totally agree that you are awarded a free kick because of an infringment, you have the advanage why should the defending team get the advantage? Great goal in my book.

I am also a qualified referee and the interpreting the rules it is a goal...

Kivver - 14 Dec 2004 12:22 - 165 of 213

yes i agree, very disappointed with the way Chelsea have reacted. Peter Chech has gone as far to say the ref was an Arsenal fan!

Flackwell Vialli - 14 Dec 2004 20:14 - 166 of 213

Given my position I see this one differently, as;

1. It was not a foul.
2. Both Eider and Cech have said that the ref told Eider 3 times that he was going to blow the whistle - That is precisely why Eider turned away and walked back as he felt he could line up in time.
3. Its Arsenal (Ok - maybe not the best reason!).

Very clever thinking by the arrogant one though - va va voom, but ironically he then goes and misses the easiest of his 3 chances.

Missed the Fulham game last nite, but a colleague said that the Mancs were all over them until then. Well done nontheless.

Scripophilist - 14 Dec 2004 21:21 - 167 of 213

"3. Its Arsenal (Ok - maybe not the best reason!)."

Nah, That's the best case for saying the goal was dodgy IMO. ROFL!

I did something for radio five live a little while ago when people were phoning in complaining that Man U always got more penalties than they should.

To my surprise it was true!! They were indeed awarded more penalties than any other team.

Flackwell Vialli - 15 Dec 2004 20:43 - 168 of 213

2 Questions Scrip

1. How did you get involved with 5 live?, and

2. Re:Man U penalties - Did they earn the majority at Home ?

Scripophilist - 18 Dec 2004 15:08 - 169 of 213

Phoned them once on a phone in and they followed up. Actually I did a session with them back in 1996 when I ran the London marathon under the football challenge moniker. Very funny as I had to run for QPR in the season they were relegated from the top flight. During the interview they asked all the questions about how long have you been a QPR fan (Of course I never had been). But when they asked if QPR would avoid relegation I said sure, they will follow my race plan. Start slow lull the rest into a sense of false security then have an amazing finish. Unfortunately neither came true!!

2. Yes

Kivver, Looks like your guys are on the turn!!

Scrip -Thanks for your response - I wondered where you could find a fit QPR fan from - all is now revealed.

Logged on today to look at my scores only to find that I couldn't have saved them properly - this in a week when I had them all 100% correct (Honest).

Still its a game of two halves, not over 'til the fact lady sings, long season etc etc.

Scripophilist - 19 Dec 2004 11:49 - 171 of 213

Current table. Much better week for me after the duck of last week!! An easier week to predict I think.

Yes got most of the results right this week if not the scores.

As for bcfc i think the next 2 weeks will show if we have turned the corner. Not sure how Savage will react to the bid from Blackburn, i just cannot understand why he would want to go there. He has been brilliant the last 2 games after a very average season where some of the fans did get on his back. You hate him but he is great to have in your team.

Had an unreal weekend of predictions, hope they credit them to me!!

Kivver - 02 Jan 2005 18:08 - 176 of 213

did some brilliant predictions for New Years Day, went on to check them and a bunch of 0-0's i must of forgot to press the confirm button, 'GUTTED'.

Scripophilist - 02 Jan 2005 20:29 - 177 of 213

Looks like they have all gone on Holiday. Two lots of matches and more tomorrow and they still haven't updated the site!!

Juzzle - 02 Jan 2005 23:58 - 178 of 213

It might not be your fault Kivver. I've had entries which I know I made, and which were acknowledged as "predictions saved" and which showed up OK on a subsequent visit, but which later disappeared and reverted to nil-nil status. Bloody infuriating!!

Kivver - 03 Jan 2005 13:42 - 179 of 213

Interesting juzzle, cheers. What about you scrip have you had the same problem? I felt sure i had pressed the the right buttons. Had quite a few problems with site.

Scripophilist - 03 Jan 2005 21:45 - 180 of 213

Not had a problem yet. Didn't have an issue last season. Maybe its the server response time. Maybe you need to wait a bit before closing the browser or drifting off to another site?

Scripophilist - 03 Jan 2005 21:46 - 181 of 213

Just glanced at the table, I appear to have shot up from 179th to 12th place!!!

how did you do that scrip, you must have had a brilliant couple of days and used your jokres. excellent!

Scripophilist - 04 Jan 2005 11:13 - 184 of 213

I got 80% of the last three sets right and quite a few correct scores. Wasted my jokers though else it could have been better. Dropped back a bit this morning to 20th after the Newcastle result last night.

Personally I think it would take a miracle to win this league. I think you need to be very lucky in order to do it. Will try my best though.

Scripophilist - 05 Jan 2005 18:10 - 185 of 213

Looks like they voided a chunk of results over the festive period. Maybe an IT issue or something like you mention? Gutted!!

Scripophilist - 06 Jan 2005 09:05 - 186 of 213

Oh lordy, looks like saints are doomed. Only won two home matches all season and now five of the last seven are against the top teams. It's been a long and rewarding 27 years in the top flight but I just can't see us escaping this time unless last years promoted teams really mess up. Just isn't the hunger there and last night looked like a team of hastily assembled second string professionals with no passion. 50/50 chance I reckon now.

I'll go off and sulk for the remainder of the day.

Scripophilist - 10 Jan 2005 12:02 - 187 of 213

Announcement on the voided matches. Very annoying!!

Flackwell Vialli - 10 Jan 2005 20:43 - 188 of 213

Too right Scrip.

Interesting Cup draw - I presume that your team will be the first choice match for TV - 2 well balanced sides with the small matter of local rivalries adding extra spice. Which side will Harry be managing come the game itself is anyones guess !

Else the draw was kind to the big teams - all being drawn at Home.

Scripophilist - 10 Jan 2005 21:42 - 189 of 213

LOL!

I couldn't believe it when they came out of the hat. We already played them in the Carling Cup last year as well. We should have met this year also if we have beaten Watford but both teams fell at the same hurdle.

Scripophilist - 10 Jan 2005 21:42 - 190 of 213

Will be an Exeter fan on Wednesday.

Kivver - 12 Jan 2005 13:36 - 191 of 213

Chelsea have tough draw!

stubax - 12 Jan 2005 13:58 - 192 of 213

Andy Johnson, If one man can keep a team in the premiership then its him. He deserves a crack in the England team for his performances in the last two seasons. Its not just his goals but his running off the ball and hard work. If he was playing for a fashionable club he would have already played for England.

Scripophilist, as a Palace supporter I know how you feel, but you have Harry there now and he is brilliant at getting quality players in cheaply and will get you battling.

Our seasons are never dull, were either were fighting relegation or pushing for promotion.

I"m never bored supporting Palace its like being on a rollercoaster, and if the saints do go down ( which I hope they don"t, as long as it is"nt us instead ) then you have the potential drama of being in the play-offs next season, which are the most intense matches in football. None of the glory supporters will ever know what they are like.

Scripophilist - 12 Jan 2005 14:05 - 193 of 213

Watford for the carling cup!

Flackwell Vialli - 13 Jan 2005 17:42 - 194 of 213

Stubax - You refer to the play-offs and the tension they bring. As a CFC fan I watched play-offs when they were used to decide who went down, as well as determining the team coming up.

If you think fighting for promotion is tough, imagine being involved in a battle to save your Premiership place.

As you probably know the system was abandoned following rioting once we'd lost, (Why they didn't recognise that the season prior I'll never know !!!)

Scripophilist - 14 Jan 2005 22:45 - 195 of 213

Well I for one am totally confused now as I appear to have lost points in the last week despite the fact that no games were played. I am sure I was nudging on 170 points even with the voided games. I think they have totally lost the plot. I think this game has gone a little to pot in all honesty.

Welcome back scrip, you must be feeling like me today on Top of the World. Still my bad luck continues:-
eg
blues 1 ***** (no swearing) 0
chelsea 4 palace 0
spurs 2 city 0
pompey 1 newcastle 2
pool 2 everton 0
just 1 goal out on so many games. I thought boro would be knackered today but at least get a draw. Its getting HOT at the bottom with Saints and WBA playing so well. Hope to God Blackburn (along with Judus Savage) go down and Saints and Albion stay up. Fingers crossed.

Kivver - 20 Mar 2005 20:22 - 198 of 213

oh and i had a joker on man u at 2-0. also well done to carefree and muffingman, who have had a great run.

Scripophilist - 20 Mar 2005 21:09 - 199 of 213

Hi Kivver, Thanks for the welcome back. I had the blues down for a 1-0 win so I cursed that late goal!!

It's certainly getting hot at the bottom. It's suddenly looking brighter for us and all I can hear in my head at the moment is that music from the great escape. Harry will be a god for ever if he does it. It's going to be so tight though!

Kivver - 20 Mar 2005 22:13 - 200 of 213

Saints and Harry are good for the prem, Camara looks a good player and scored a cracker against my team, i was sitting in line with it and ball went so fast you could hardly see it move.

Scripophilist - 11 Apr 2005 18:28 - 201 of 213

The end of the season is almost upon us. Damn West Brom for scoring that late goal else I would have been three points better off and Southampton would still be out of the relegation zone.

Well done scrip and thanks for doing this. Im up for it next year if your still interested in doing it. Comiserations on going down, but i think WBA are lot peoples second favourite team in the midlands so well done to them. If you can keep Harry you should come straight back up. Good luck and thanks again.

Scripophilist - 16 May 2005 12:26 - 204 of 213

I will run it again next year. Maybe with more entrants.

I was at the match and it was a bit of let down. But Man Utd where a class apart is has to be said. We never looked like winning in the second half and the last half an hour nothing really happened no fire in the belly no last mintue dramas a bit of a let down.

Scripophilist - 17 May 2005 16:04 - 205 of 213

FYI, I'm famous! But at the expense of my own football team.

Yes should be OK, Just going through a manic spell so haven't visited the thread in a while. I will probably come up with Cunningham I guess. Will discuss with him in the next couple of days.

Scripophilist - 17 May 2005 18:42 - 212 of 213

Sorry I should explain, It looked like I was about to go on TV but I think the research department were too sceptical to go ahead with the story.

Flackwell Vialli - 17 May 2005 19:36 - 213 of 213

Thanks Scrip and all opponents - interesting story you posted on the prediction front.

Would love to join in next year, but I must admit that I lost faith in the BBC site over the xmas/new year period, so quite pleased with my official performance.

Enjoy the summer break everyone, and here's to a competitive league next season.
