US wrap
The market opened higher and despite an intra-day lull closed within a short reach of its best levels of the morning, with the major averages sporting gains of 0.3-0.9%... The positive bias was generated by multiple factors, which included favorable carry-over from yesterday's session, lower crude oil prices, and a sizeable pullback in bond yields...
With respect to crude oil prices, which have been center-stage of late, they dropped $1.26 to $39.44/bbl on expectation that OPEC will increase production quotas at its June 3 meeting, while major non-OPEC oil producers are likely to increase output given the high prices... The lower bond yields supported the advance of the stock market as the 10-year note was up 13/32, bringing its yield down to a three-week low of 4.60%... Also supporting the market's gains were technical factors, which included the major averages' ability to stay above their respective 200-day moving averages, which the Dow and the Nasdaq cleared in yesterday's session, as well as the S&P 500's ability to clear and the Nasdaq's ability to hold above their respective 50-day moving averages...
The bulk of the sectors closed in positive territory, with the oil & gas services sector among the only laggards of note... Leaders to the upside included the internet, semiconductor, communications services, consumer, drug, steel, chemical, retail, and gold sectors... This morning's economic reports had little effect on the market, but included the preliminary Q1 GDP at 4.4%, up from 4.2% previously, with the Chain Deflator at 2.6% (consensus 2.5%) and the Initial Claims report at 344K (consensus 335K)...

All bodes well for a strong open in the UK but recently the UK does not seem to want to play ball.

Good hunting
M

Evening Martini - appreciate the info. Tomorrow will be the end of a long week for you.

vasey - 27 May 2004 23:50 - 4 of 56

I would just like to encourage a few of the lurkers who clearly read these threads to post a few words today. Most of us won't bite and it is only when lots of people share their views that a good debate can get started. So, be brave; let us know you are out there and post something......start with 'hello!'

dotel - 27 May 2004 23:55 - 5 of 56

well...hello

brockman - 28 May 2004 00:29 - 6 of 56

Hello, hello, v..... I popped back to pay my respects to Croc initially, got caught up reading some threads, then whoosh, it very quickly becomes addictive and its Coronation Street all over again. Take care, Brocks

vasey - 28 May 2004 00:34 - 7 of 56

Much more fun to take part than just watch from the sidelines, Brocks.....I lurked for months before I garnered the courage to add my first comment. Now you can't shut me up!

dotel - 28 May 2004 00:37 - 8 of 56

True, true

vasey - 28 May 2004 00:39 - 9 of 56

OK, I've had the odd glass of wine in Poochy's.... so shoot me! Maybe I should go to bed....

amberjane - 28 May 2004 00:42 - 10 of 56

Nah, have another one, it's been a long week.

Finally managed a trade today.....a sell at 4.20 so will be up early to spend again. Goodnite all

Kayak - 28 May 2004 02:23 - 11 of 56

Ftse closed above its pp on thu and gained .9 in the auction, still trading the 4400/70 range, uptrend intact off the Wed low, pos break down at the pivot to keep an eye on, dow finally over 10120 but ftse still sub 4470, dow close above 10200 may give the ftse some impetus to challenge the highs again imho if uptrend stays intact!

ThePlayboy - 28 May 2004 07:06 - 14 of 56

Updated 5/27 for Friday's market.
Key DOW Levels for 5/28
UP Above 10,230
DN Below 10,150

Upside Break
Dow breaks consolidation to upside, trends higher for the session.

From prior commentary, "...The fact that the Dow has formed a consolidation at the highs implies a likely continuation in the medium term. An upside break through the top of the range at 10,130 will likely spark such a move tomorrow..."
The Dow got the upside break through the top of the tight consolidation at 10,130 this morning, sparking another sharp advance, as seen in the 15 and 60 Minute Charts. The Dow held strong for much of the session, gaining 95 points by the Close.

The 15 Minute Chart shows the Dow looks to be forming the framework for another continuation pattern at the highs of today's upmove, which is bullish. Look for the index to hold within the boundaries of 10,150 and 10,225 before another solid move is seen. A break from this range will likely make for another solid move in the direction of the break.

Short Term Dow

Short term, the Dow has formed a clear trend line beneath the lows of the recent three-day upmove, seen in the 5 Minute Chart. A downside break of the line at 10,170 will likely make for weakness tomorrow morning.

Medium Term Dow

In the medium term, we entered the market Long this morning at 10,191, but stopped out at the entry due to the Breakeven Rule. We are still out of the market and will watch 10,230 up, and 10,150 down; using 20 point stops.

NASDAQ & S&P

The S&P and NASDAQ each moved higher out of their respective ranges this morning, making for strength for the session. Look for another continuation pattern to form to indicate further strength. *

Summary

The Dow got a solid upside break from the consolidation this morning, which sparked strength for the session. The Dow should be considered bullish at this point, especially if it continues to hold above 10,150. A break of this level will indicate a likely pull-back within the current uptrend.

Morning all, thought I had the wrong thread for a moment 19 posts already!

I think the UK is not following the US as it thinks the US is going to go into free fall any minute and no one wants to get caught out.

I think it's jumping the gun a bit!

little woman - 28 May 2004 08:35 - 22 of 56

I still have my CFD - ITV long open, it's a bit like pulling teeth, but it's slowly going in the right direction! I'm out a lot at the moment so can't keep an eye on it and can't afford to take a chance of a sudden big drop so picked this share as I think it is less volatile than others I watch!

Sitting with MKS in profit (for the first time in ages). I'm in and out today so trying to decide whether to take my profit or wait for possible cash/share offer. Any suggestions? Perhaps should set stop loss .....

After an hours trading the markets are in postitive territory but off their opening highs with MKS standing out in trading action.

Nice to wake up to a blue sky and a blue screen. PTG finally appears on the up again and DNX looks positive.

Anyone here trade/hold MCTY. Currently undergoing a buy back programme after a good set of results. Looking to trade them vs the housebuilding sector as likely to outperform the sector if house prices come under pressure.

Off to play golf later - have a good day and good luck all

Lw : My thinking is along the same lines as you that it will pop and drop. Also I personally would not like to hold say large positions over the long weekend with all this oil, crude, gas, terror alerts etc.thats my opinion and as u say the market can do anything and be right and with the yanks never know what is going to happen.

I have been struggling today to know how to wrap up this week and then I read the Greystone column by Alan English on ADVFN.

With his permission I repost it here as he does it so much better than I.

---------------------------------------------------------------

A Week Overshadowed By Sadness (29/05/04)

David Anderson

This is, without doubt, the most difficult and the saddest week that I have ever had to report on.

A great BBer passed away this week. David Anderson (Crocodile) died in his sleep on the night of Monday 24th May. I am sad beyond expression.

David represented the very best in a whole era in the history of private investing. He also represented the very best in human nature. He was never happier than when he was helping someone out. A genuine "helpaholic"!

The Crocodile name is synonymous with all of the most positive things that the financial Bulletin Boards produce.

I first had the pleasure of meeting David in the very early days of BBs and internet-based financial systems when we were all struggling to get to grips with the new environment that appeared to offer us endless opportunities but also presented us with a million hurdles to climb. Crocodile immediately set out to make it easier for us all to understand this brave new world and went out of his way to make sure that we all benefited from his expertise.

In latter years, I watched David many times giving his presentations on the intricacies of such things as Level Two data and was in awe of the skill he applied and the infectious enthusiasm he brought to each occasion. No-one was better at recognising what was going on in the market than Croc.

On a social level, David brought joy to any occasion. If you were ever fortunate enough to spend any time in his company, you will know just how much fun he was and how he would always emerge as the centre piece. Everyone had a question for him and he always made time to find an answer. A real gentleman.

I'm sure David will always be remembered with great love and respect. His passing has left a huge void that will be difficult, if not impossible, to fill. It is a sad week. For us all.

God bless you David. I am proud to say that I knew you.

Greystone

There are threads of condolence running on every Bulletin Board you care to visit. It is a measure of Crocodile's love of what he did and his enthusiasm for helping people that he is mourned so widely by so many. Reading through the threads, you will see the same words and sentiments repeated over and over. A "lovely man". A "real giver". A "thoroughly nice guy". A "snappy and gentlemanly trader". "A true trader in every sense of the word and a great loss to us all." He gave "freely and generously of his time and expertise."

To represent the feelings of us all, I would like to quote from a couple of messages from BBers who I know, like me, had known David for a long time.

From ExecLine:-
"Our Croc was so very charming and professional and always conducted his business in a way whereby he always put much more in than he expected to take out."

From Gausie:-
"There are few who have helped so many people to work towards their dreams and ambitions. I've spoken to so many people and they all tell of how Croc made them feel special - not only by freely helping them with whatever they needed, but also by actually making time for them. How can one man make so much time for so many people in one short lifetime?"

I think that sums up very well the great esteem in which David will always be held.

There are threads of condolence running on both the Premium BB and on the Free BB where Fenec found a perfect photograph on Crocs own site (www.snappytrader.com) to open with. An image that shows David how he was happiest; surrounded by computer screens flashing out market data. His true legacy is the profusion of private individuals who have been touched by him and, in that way, have been turned into better people as well as better investors. Davids work lives on in us all. (If you wish to leave a personal message, please feel happy to do so. When the time is appropriate, copies of the threads will be sent to David's family to let them see just how big and important an influence he was on so many lives.)

The thoughts and prayers of the entire BB community go out to David's family in this most difficult time for them.

In lieu of my Poster of the Week prize, this week I will be making a donation to the Georgina Ward of The Dudley Group of Hospitals NHS Trust in response to the wishes of David Anderson's family. I know how close to their hearts this is.

Fundamentalist - 28 May 2004 18:01 - 52 of 56

Martini,

A fitting post to finish with, thank you for your considerable efforts this week in keeping the thread going in memory of Croc, its what he would have wanted and for that we are grateful.

superrod - 28 May 2004 18:08 - 53 of 56

a great post matini( courtesy of Greystone )

i do wonder sometimes though how many posters have met their maker in a given period. there are many on this and other bbs conspicuous by their absence. whether capitulation or other reasons, who knows?

croc was only a year older than me and in the prime of his life.......i still feel like i did when i was 18 but this dreadfully sad news has made me think VERY seriously about my lifestlye

ABSOLUTELELY NO INFERRENCES INTENDED TO DAVID.

i look at my 8 children now and appreciate what i have, not what i WANT.......because ive realised i already have it

Golddog - 28 May 2004 19:30 - 54 of 56

Just an update on the Cafe investment game that finished today.......Yes i do not believe it myself but poochy managed to pull it off and stay at the top to win with a decent 105,844.68. Hightone not far behind and stayed in the exclusive 100k club, and This is me came in third playing very well during the Game.
Hilary never showed any threat but i think she was just giving us a bit of a chance this time (she will always be the Queen of Trading), and the wonderful Gianni came in last (You win a free Bods!)

The Best performing Investor Woman goes to the Sweet Bunny with her M&S investment beating off little woman in the last day or so - well done.

Gianni who is full of good heart promised 100 to the winners designated charity but with the recent sad happenings to Croc it is only fair that this money should go to Crocs family and for them to decide where the money can go to. Thankyou Gianni for such kindness.

Martini - 28 May 2004 19:40 - 55 of 56

Indeed GD - thank you Gianni
