Dil, its not my tip, just my preference.
As for cheating gits....well only one player is guilty of that so not sure why whole team should suffer.
And we all know that every national team cheats in one way or other these days...........diving, play acting etc.
If you support a wee team either in England or SCotland, then you will probably still see true honest guys that play for the love of the game, albeit the quality is poorer but i prefer watching them as they r honest

Almost every Yorkshire team has been bankrupted and all the money the fans input pissed away! But at least now most of the teams are back to playing British players.

UEFA, FIFA etc have also ruined the game in modern times with all the different rule changes. Does anyone know what the offside rule is these days. If so, how come one team is given an offside goal and another one isnt.
I always find (whether in Italian, English or Scottish leagues!) that the bigger teams get almost everything, whether penalties given/not given, offside goals, players that should be sent off that aren't etc.
Yes, Brianboro u r right. All this money has made the game worse. But even some of the British players (albeit at the highest level) cheat by diving etc (ie. Michael Owen)

the bigger teams have always had better decisions . its the way it has always been ..... so no change there. if so many people are disillusioned with the modern game , then why do so many more people watch it? fifa get nothing but criticism , yet some of their rule changes have allowed football and footballers to flourish , i.e. the no pass back rule change ( older people will remember the dirges games became when keepers were allowed to pick up the ball from a back pass) and also trying to outlaw the tackle from behind . these kinds of rule changes have made the game more enjoyable to watch . as for the offside rule , its always been complicated and long may it continue to be so .truth be told , it can never be simple.as much as we all get caught up in the games , please remember, its only a game. ( yeah ! right!!!!) anyway,

I think England will draw with France then it's all about not getting complacent against the Swiss & Croats.Then it's a case of anything can happen in the knockout games.
Personally I like the look of the Italians as they never concede too many goals and have a bit of grit & guile.Del perio & Totti will be the ones everyone looks to but I think Cassano of Roma could be a future star if he gets a look in.

When Dwayne Chambers? tested positive the whole British relay team were stripped of their medals. UEFA missed a golden opportunity to send out a zero tolerance to drug cheats when they allowed Russia to keep their place imo scotinvestor.

Footballers do cheat, but surely it is up to the refs to punish them. Also in my view they should hand out yellow and red cards after the match once a second official has looked at TV replays and discovered cheating (this could lead to bans/ players missing future matches). Admittedly it is not much good giving a subsequent red card to a player who was in the final (I don't think they will be too worried about missing a qualifying game for the next world cup)!!

Gallick, your statement comes from a recent article. However it states that about 1/3 of scotland will be supporting england. However, up here the recent figures say that 18% of Scotland is populated by English. So maybe they asked all the english guys in the survey, lol.

England haven't a hope. Reason? Easy, Englands players are over-paid, the captain is a poof who concentrates too much on the colour of his nail varnish and his latest tattoo than his football.
There just isn't the 'hunger' in Englands game as there was in years gone by.
So I think they should only paid then what they are worth, and introduce performance related pay, so if they win a game they get a nice bonus (all of the team) but keep the wages small IMHO.

The media in England hype the English team up to be world beaters. Reality shows that they aint unless they play in England where they play better like most nations.
Beckham is way way over-rated. All he can really do is cross a ball. He does that well though, much better than most players.
You'll never stop the vast sums of money these empty headed morons get paid at footy now.
BSkyB has a lot to answer for.........and i dont like all these games played on a sunday midday, afternoon, monday night etc etc.
Bring back sat at 3pm and wed at 7.30pm when i used to go lots 20 or so years ago. I stopped going to footy now as i think most of it is garbage. Most players cant even trap a ball.

for some reason your english television and radio commentators just cant get it into there heads that the game lasts till the whistle is blown
now as you might have guessed by now my support has left the english camp(just because of the tripe these guys are allowed to spit out)
i was wanting england to beat the french but when you have ppl like your commentators and program organisors taking the piss and making out that the team have already won when the ball is still being kicked smells of pure ARROGANCE

Once again we managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.....how anyone can say Heskey is an international footballer has always amazed me.....great to see Rooney hungry, direct and not afraid to stick the boot in, shame the invisble midfield and owen had to be shown by an 18 year old. the defence was fine, king and campbell were solid...why was james in the middle of his goal for the freekick??..his wall should have been covering the left side to allow him to cover the right....was scholes actually playing.??..and becks should never be captain in a month of sundays..he has absolutely no leadership qualities....post mortems yet again....!!

brianboru, dont be fooled.tournaments are all about peaking at the right time, i.e. the final . great tournaments teams like italy , germany , france tend to start not so well and improve as the tournament progresses. france showed against england that they could up their game . did england??. thats as good as england get.italy will improve greatly for their next game against sweden , who were never 5 goals better then bulgaria. also, the press and media criticism back in italy will hurt the pride of the players. this will give trapatoni ammunition to galvanise his players. even at their worst( and last nights performance wasnt far off thier worst) they still didnt concede, buffon, nesta , and cannavaro , played well. i expect beter things from italy in the next couple of games. they will get better , as will france, portugal and spain.

All the teams have played now. Who has impressed? I would say France, Sweden and more questionably the Chech Rep. England were also good. As I suspected, Italy were rubbish, Spain poor and Holland and Germany the same. (As you can see I've been doing a lot of work recently).
Will England qualify? With Owen off form I think our survival depends on the goals coming from Rooney and Lampard. The trouble with Rooney is you cannot be sure that he will stay on the pitch! I think the Swiss and Croats will be out to wind him up.

I considered it 50/50 and merely guessed 3/0

According to a post I saw on 'the other site' the Government are concerned that too many drivers with low IQ's are driving on our British roads. To warn other drivers of their presence it has been decided that those with IQ's under 70 must sport one white flag with a red cross above their drivers door and those classed as mentally sub-normal or below must display two or more on their vehicle.

pele,3 world cups ,,,is that right. france 98 owen was the man, on a couple of good games ,now its rooney`s turn.the thing is these players are not the best/and they are not the worst.dalglish/cruff/best/maradonna/,etc all played consistently at the top of there game. rooney still has a lot to do modern players will find it hard to achieve greatness,with all the money they get at an early age. robbie fowler a modern god in his day,,,now earns more as a property holder [100 houses] and rising. still i bet he earns over 40k a week as a player at man city. nice work if you can get it.....come on wayne bank it young son,, all the best.

Re: Penalties - As any footballer/fan will tell you there really a lottery/nerve test. Statistically we've had such a bad run that the tables will turn eventually.
As many have noted England aren't the team that the media/armchair brigade have painted. Those that can hold their heads high include the Evertonian, Cole, and Neville, but as a Chelsea boy I for one do not want Gerard at the Bridge. Too many wasted passes imo, and yesterdays midfield was absent. (Lamps with Gerard).
Hopefully Sven will learn not to rely on Heskey, and persist so much with an out of form Owen/Beckham - although both will bounce back.
And whilst the sweaties are enjoying their moment can I remind them of Euro 96, when they both lost the match, having missed from the spot.

Flackwell - The reason I find it difficult to support England is the yobbish culture which surrounds English football (soccer) - You won't see the often nasty and violent sort of behavior from The Scots, Irish, Swedes, Dutch or anyone else in Europe even though they are just as passionate about both their country and their national team. Why the England team (and some English league teams) attract so much tatooed dross is beyond me but they do and it puts me off them.
Anyway, back to serious matters. Come on Van the Man. Hope they get through tonight and had a tiny bet on them.

You are not quite right there...the dutch fans have got a pretty bad reputation for violent behaviour in the past, although as always it is a tiny minority. Interestingly there is very little trouble these days in English soccer, only abroad where the foreign police don't know how to deal with it, and it is nearly always away from the stadiums. A case of alcohol fanning the flames of nationalism.
Which raises a rather big question...is nationalism/patriotism a good thing, or does it simply serve to divide people, although perhaps Euro 2004 has bought them together ?
See my predictions are doing well. If denmark win tonight that will be 0 out of 4. Best I stick to shares!

Drinkgood - Perhaps you ought to talk to a few of your fellow Scots who reguarly in the past used to come down en masse to London, smashed out of their skulls. Having attended a few Eng V Scot games I have seen at first hand the politeness/ettiquette of those proud to sport Tartan.
I also note that you think Football hooliganism is confined to the English - Perhaps you may recall for example Celtic fans (Scots ? Irish ?) returning from Europe, or Holland as another poster has pointed out plus many other club sides from such countries as Turkey, Germany, Spain and Italy.
The Scottish also frequently resort to the usual anti-English nonsense such as asking for their own parliament, then denying us our own, claiming the oil fields are theirs, when for years Scotland has sucked money from us in the south to pay their social security bills, etc etc. Perhaps that is why the English now proudly display the St Georges flag, rather than associate themselves with the Union Jack.

as for oil fields, well its international companies with foreign people including us scots that help to make oil money. Having said that, all the money is sent down to westminster.
i've never felt it for last 2 or 3 years but i do think Scotland should become independent.

Portugal really deserve it after reaching the last 4 in Belgium and going out unluckily to France. They have the flair and the desire.. Holland look very ordinary despite their players...not played as a team this tournament. Mind you still gubbed us scots 6-O.at the Amsterdam arena. I was at that game and found myself sitting next to Colin Hendry (ex Blackburn and Scotland)...he's now just a regular fan and travels (in a kilt and tartan bunnet) everywhere with the Tartan Army. Anyway stick to the football on this thread you guys and just remember that we Scots are only down in England for one reason..it's all about improving the gene pool.
