A quiet start. Difficult to see where the excitement will come from today.

Barratt Developments should deliver solid results with a 12th straight year of growth.

I don't expect anything special from Smiths Industries but the results should show a small improvement over last year.

Manchester United will probably get a lot of coverage and their present modest placing in the premiership will have as much to do with the share price as the financial results do. :-)

This little news item might cause a few ripples in the gambling sector :-

The UK government will today dash the hopes of smaller casino chains, such as Rank Group PLC and Gala, by limiting large jackpot slot machines to so-called 'super-casinos', the FT reported. According to the FT, culture secretary Tessa Jowell will today reject that recommendation in a response from her dept.

I am still not tempted to go back into BFP, not enough to gain and plenty to lose if The Icelandic deal falls through.

If it works then the longer sufferers will deserve anything they can get, but there is no need to share the pain imo.

If it goes ahead a breakup is being speculated as the probable result. Bauger would only want the Iceland label, so the can put Icelandic labels in to sell or is that too simple?!

sounds about right to me,i think malcolm walker is after some stores,after all the bad press of the last 5 years {the iceland brand is not worth much{he will but his new brand on the stores{cooltrader}he is already flying with it .

The Fed raised rates last night and the market really did not care one way or the other. I have not written anything over the last 3 days because I did not have a clue where we were going. The market is stuck in a range between 1120 and 1130 in the SP500.



Volumes picked up yesterday and the FTSE has broken above the important 4600 area. Technically this targets the 5013 area in this index. However, I have never seen the FTSE move up and the Dow move down or trade sideways in the same period. By that rationale you can make an educated guess that the Dow and the US in general will rally as well. Until you see the market break above 1132 the market could just be range-bound. A move above 1128 could be bullish intra-day but my indicators are suggesting that Thursday may not be bullish at all.



Looking ahead to the rest of the month I am of the opinion that the big funds may try to stabilise the market at current levels. The quarter-end mark up is definitely in play and this could make it difficult for the bears to push the market down. Should 1118 be taken out it could attract much more selling as it is a key technical pivot.



The oil companies like Exon and the cyclical companies in the US are holding up well. As long as these two groups are holding up I see no reason to be overtly bearish.



The 24th September is a major cycle turn and it may be a high, by looking at the way the market is trading. It is two days away so I would keep an eye out for that. A weekly close in the Dow above 10350 could be the trigger to a rally taking the Dow to test the highs for the year. The problem is that volumes are significantly lower than average and we are making lower highs and lows. As I said a move above 10350 may just be the trigger we are looking for to confirm the bullish count.



So there you go, I am neither bullish nor bearish. I am sitting on the sideline together with millions of others, waiting for something to happen. J

Rick - never used 5,8,5 myself. Had a wee look some time ago, but was doing OK with the normal settings so took it no further. Also got into doing the SEAQ's so haven't used short term intraday since last year. Minimum I use now is 60mins!!!!
