thanks mam
this is the second trial i have tried and will deffo look at the costs invoved wrt L2.my strategy which works rather well (most of the time) is to buy any blue chip that has fallen by 2% or more. was just about to dive back into corus. thanks again, maybe things will change later on, in the meantime i see the volume of sell orders makes a purchase by me rather foolish at present

Ian,
Thanks for the trial, but it seems to be slowing my pc down to a crawl now. Worked fine this morning for an hour or so, but not so any more. On the L2 page, it takes an age to change when you type in a new epic code in loading up the new page. Also slows down the length of time it takes to post a message on the BB. I now get a warning coming up from my toolbar saying my virtual memory is low, never had that before. I run 750k broadband as my internet connection.
Any suggestions?
Cheers
Gav

gav,
The level 2 applet seems to be struggling to load on your machine, but it is exactly the same as the one which runs stockwatch, so I cannot see how it would cause these problems.
Can you do a re boot and see if that speeds things up?
Thanks

Ian,
Thanks for that, will give it a try. Strange it was working perfectly this morning then slowed down later on. Will try a re boot.

gavdfc, sounds like you're very short on main memory. How much do you have? 256Mb is really the minimum these days. Normally cheap and easy to upgrade.

Kayak,
Thanks for that.
I have 384mb and currently have 42mb in the available physical memory, if that makes sense! I did upgrade my memory early this year, but my pc is about 3 years old and as far as I can remember, that was the max it would take. The L2 seems to be working fine now for some reason. Maybe need a new pc!
Cheers

You may be able to get more memory in by replacing e.g. a 128Mb board with a 256Mb subject to the motherboard being able to take it. It does sound as though you're reaching the limit of your memory. Also have a look in Task Manager as to which processes are using the most memory.

Kayak,
Think you must be right re lack of memory. PC and L2 just slowed down again and getting warning re virtual memory. Wonder why it only works for a while.
Thanks again.

gavdfc, see post 10 and also some applications are badly written so that they consume memory as time goes on without releasing it. That should be obvious in task manager as you will see the process increasing in size.

Kayak,
From memory, I don't think my motherboard was able to take any more memory than what I have put in. Looking in task manager, it seems to be all iexplorer.exe taking up the memory. I have 34 processes running. Will have a look at them later to see if they are all needed.
Cheers

Does anyone find that Level 2 is useful to the average small punter not buying big lots of FTSE stocks such as Barclays and Vodafone ?
SueHelen
- 04 Nov 2004 18:35
- 31 of 55
Its even better for small capitalisation stocks such as those that trade on the Alternative Investment Market (AIM) Sober. I think its an excellent tool once you get the hang of it and see all those Market Maker games, panic and desperation being played. On the other hand, you get to see how nice they become as well when they increase their prices frantically once any good news you've been waiting for comes through et al IQE today.
Well worth the cost I think.

an added bonus of the free trial is that you get continuous streaming.
i am only a small punter who trades relatively infrequently which ( although i can immedfiately see L2 benefits ) in all honesty prohibits a subscription. would it not be possible to have a system where you pay as you use, rather than it being available all day?

to get a bit lateral......what comes after L2?....if everyone who is trading/investing can see what everyone else is doing/about to do, what is the point?.......will we all be sitting at our monitors just hoping we own shares where good news is announced?

This would point to a pop up blocker stopping this for you. It could well be within a firewall if you have on or in XP or on something like Google toolbar - can you check that pop ups are enabled.
