During the 19th and 20th centuries, Freeman fox and partners and john taylor and sons built international reputations in the respective fields of highways and bridges and water and waste water collectively responsible for projects such as the Victoria Falls Bridge, Sydney Harbour Bridge, Humber and Severn bridges, the Shanghai Water supply and major water and sewerage works in Leningrad and Tehran. The two firms merged in 1987 to form Acer Consultants.
Acer Consultants was aquired by Welsh Water in 1993 and renamed Hyder Consulting in 1996.
When Welsh water Now named Hyder plc was taken over by Western power distribution the senior management of Hyder Consulting aquired the business in a management buy out in Jan 2001,
Recent projects include, Melbourne City Link,Emirates Twin Towers and the Cairo Waste water project.

-to 31/3/06 EPS 18.4p, divi 1.5p
Put a P/E of just 12 on that and you come up with a price of 220p. It puts the current price into perspective on a P/E of 8.9.....

THIS IS MONEY'S WEEKLY SMALL CAPS
Higher margins at Hyder

ENGINEERING design and management consultancy Hyder Consulting has turned in yet another good set of numbers for the half to September.
Savvy chief executive Tim Wade unveiled 27% sales growth to 80.9m, with profits powering up 120% to 2.6m. Earnings per share were lifted 98% to 7.25p.
Wade said the half-time order book stood at 218m, 18% up on last March's figure at the year-end. The group's major markets were robust, according to Wade, who said the 2012 Olympics in London should boost the engineering consulting sector in the South East over the next few years.
Hyder continues to drive up margins by boosting the volume of fees put through its fixed cost base, and investing in higher margin work in design and advisory services.
During the half, Hyder acquired Queensland-based property and leisure consultancy Weathered Howe and October saw Hyder complete two further Australian acquisitions covering environmental services and transport planning.
Regionally, there was a rise in operating profits from 1.6m to 2.5m in the UK and Europe, Germany proved disappointing ahead of the election, and property sector strength drove Middle East turnover north from 10.7m to 15.9m.
Revenues in Asia Pacific, where Hong Kong made a small loss, rose strongly from 14.5m to 20.4m thanks to bumper growth in Australia.
For the year, analysts predict pre-tax profits of 6.3m and earnings per sahre of 17.9p, placing Hyder's shares at 260.5p on an reasonable forward price/earning ratio of 14.6.
Recommendation: Buy.

Yeah, I met a guy in Abu Dhabi in late 2001 who flagged up the concept even then of getting into this particular arena. Not so much HYC, but did mention one or two names that I didn't know, who are now heavily involved in HYC. I didn't even realise they connection until after I had sunk some money into them.
Tell me, Bob. Are HYC involved in a major desalination plant in the UAE or an embryonic Hydrogeneration project, because the same conversation that the names cropped up in was mainly about this American guy putting about 2million into a project along those lines, and after 5 years I might be able to make sense of what he was telling me.

Todays RNS shows why;

Good call Alan. Looks very strong at present - good growth and prospects in decent markets. Apart from miserable but understandably low yield, only downsides I can see are hefty pension scheme liabilities and possibility of getting an acquisition wrong. As with any consultancy, its best assets might also in theory walk out of the door. If I had any (and i don't) think I would be tempted to sell half once they had doubled and run the profit.Finance director sounds rather posh for you northern shareholders - hope he is not left handed ( always wary of left handed hyphens)

My Oz pal is a great fan of HYC ...... He's on hol at the mo, but will chat to him on his return to see if he still thinks they are a "buy" at the current comparatively high level, especially given current market volatility.
If one is frightfully clever, there is a lot of money to be made on the indices, but it's a brave and clever guy who can read the direction ...... Dow dived over 100 points at one point yesterday on inflation fears; recovered about 40 points and has zipped ahead about 60 today ..... all in a very tight range really, with tough resistance at 11250 ...... Don't forget the dictum that when Wall Street sneezes, the whole world catches a cold.

Thanks ofr the posts guys.
Been batting on about this one since it was just over 2, but the chartists tell me that a golden cross is seldom wrong (and 1 appears to be coming) and my own research suggests a very savvy company positioning itself to make a mint from consultancy in the run up to 2012 olympics.
If the trend looks like turning I may break an old habit of mine and get out and try to get back in cheaper.
if it goes the way it usually does, my sale will be the biggest buy signal the world has ever seen.

Just looking at the chart (and i aint a chartist), the 50dma and the 200dma are both on an uptrend. the 50dma is about to cross the 200dma, upwards. I am told this is a golden cross, when it happens (nest day or two).

I was given to believe that the price they cross at is irrelevant, it will signal the start of a bull run.

Alan

- 11 Aug 2006 09:55

Golden Cross .... this is formed when two up-trendindg major mdas cross each other ...... in this instance 50 and 200 mda at just below 270 ..... while this is a (very) bullish signal, the rpi needs to be taken into account ..... HYC at about 320 is technically quite strongly overbought, so on that basis, one should not be jumping in until rpi is more neutral.
hope that helps

This years order book is now 2 months old and showing 60% of full year target.
That is without all the bonus of 2012 so it looks like a very good medium -long term play.

had rather taken my eye off this one .... having had a bit of bleak time in March, sp is now firmly on the up, having breached the psychological and all-time high barriers of 500 .... definitely one to consider, especially if there is any short term reaction

And there goes the 550 barrier.
Though probably short term, cos it must pull back a bit soon.

Hyder Consulting PLC
Interim Management Statement
Hyder Consulting PLC, the multi-national design and engineering consultancy, today issues its Interim Management Statement covering the period to 28 January 2013.
Trading performance
The Group has performed in line with our expectations.
In Asia Pacific our Australian results have been in line with plan, and we have recently secured a number of significant new contracts. Prospects in China are improving, although our operations incurred a small loss in quarter 3 as awards have been slower to come to fruition than anticipated.
In the Middle East results are higher than the prior year and in line with expectations, following mobilisation on new projects in Qatar and Saudi Arabia.
In Europe, as expected, results have improved in the second half. Our UK transport business, in particular, has performed well in the period.
Acquisitions
The Group acquired BCH Engineering Consultants Pty Ltd ("BCH") on 17 December 2012. BCH is a small Perth based consultancy, with expertise in the energy and resource sectors. Initial consideration of A$3 million (c.£2 million) was paid in cash, with a further A$2 million (c.£1.3 million) cash payable contingent on future business performance. BCH improves our access to the Western Australian market and clients, enabling us to respond to demand in the region utilising our existing Australian offices and Global Excellence Centres.
Power Systems Project & Consultancy Services Ltd ("PCS") was acquired by the Group on 19 December 2012. PCS is a specialist, independent high-voltage simulation, analysis and electrical design business employing 42 specialist staff, based in Scotland. The company works extensively in the transmission, distribution and renewable generation areas with clients including Scottish Power / Iberdrola and Scottish & Southern Energy. Initial consideration of £3 million was paid in cash, with up to a further £0.5 million cash payable contingent on future business performance. The acquisition builds on Hyder's growing expertise in the energy sector and follows on from its purchase of ESR Technology Ltd in June 2011.
Financial position
The Group retains a strong balance sheet with a net cash position, and has significant headroom against its banking facilities with which to pursue new opportunities.
Outlook
Although market conditions remain variable, the Group's favourable positioning and its diversified international base give us confidence for the full year.

Questor share tip: Buy Hyder Consulting as its reveals record order book

Hyder Consulting
Shares in Hyder Consulting were weak in the first half 2013, a trait common across the engineering sector. However, this week’s full-year results revealed a record order book, strong cashflow and management raised its dividend a third. Now looks like a good entry point.
Hyder has provided engineering and design services for famous buildings including Sydney Harbour Bridge, Tower Bridge in London and the world’s tallest, Burj Khalifa, in Dubai. It has a market value of around £150m.
The business has a global presence, but it operates three “design excellence” centres. One in the Philippines undertakes the design of highways and property projects, with its Indian centre focusing on utility and rail projects. A third in Bulgaria opened in 2011 to support its German business.
These centres employ more than 10pc of group headcount. The advantage of carrying out global business from these regions instead of the UK, is their highly educated and motivated workforce and overall costs are much lower.
The group’s businesses are plugged into some major bullish investment themes. These are urbanisation, increased investment in mass transit schemes worldwide, low carbon design to tackle climate change and water and power scarcity.
In the 12 months to March, revenues rose by 8pc to £298.1m and pre-tax profit jumped 9pc to £18.8m. The group’s net cash balance soared to £24.3m from £15.6m, which is a useful war chest for strategic acquisitions.
The group’s order book increased by 14pc to a record £413.2m, which means about 65pc of the current year’s forecast revenue is already secured.
This has created a degree of confidence in the future great enough for the group to increase its dividend by much more than the market expected. The final payment of 8p, which will be made on August 9, brings the total for the year to 12p, an increase of 33pc.
Analysts had pencilled in a dividend of 11.99p next year, which is below the full-year announced this week. This means that the prospective yield next year of around 2.8pc is likely to be understated as analysts will increase their forecast this week.
The company’s business in Australia has low exposure to the resources sector, which makes up just 5pc of its revenues. Mining giants in the country are reining in expenditure after years of runaway investment.
In its Middle Eastern business, operating profits rose 82pc over the year to £7.1m and the company has won some major contracts recently, including a £70m contract for the design and supervision for a section of Doha Expressway. It has increased exposure to the infrastructure market in Saudi Arabia, which should help make up for a slowdown in Dubai and the wider United Arab Emirates.
The shares are trading on a 2014 earnings multiple of 9.8, falling to 9.3. This does not seem overstretched for a company with such a solid underlying performance. Questor thinks the recent fall is a buying opportunity.

Questor share tip: Focus on Hyder long-term and benefit from discount to peers
TelegraphBy John Ficenec | Telegraph – Sat, Oct 5, 2013 21:00 BST.
The engineering consultant is benefitting from a construction boom in the Middle East, says Questor.
Hyder Consulting (LSE: HYC.L - news) 487p Questor says BUY
Hyder Consulting, the engineering consultant, is offering rapid dividend growth to investors. So the shares trading on a discount to sector peers are well worth a second look.
Hyder has more than doubled its dividend over the past four years. That has seen the payout to shareholders soar from 4.5p in 2009, to 12p today.
There is still plenty of room for that dividend to increase further. Analysts expect it to rise by 10pc both this year and next, reaching 14.5p by 2015.
This looks very reasonable as well. The dividend was covered 3.5 times by earnings and cash flow in the year ended March 2013.
Hyder has achieved this performance by focusing on high growth overseas markets. More than two-thirds of Hyder's revenue comes from engineering work in Asia Pacific and Middle East regions.
The Middle East is going through something of an infrastructure boom as it uses petrodollars to build hospitals, railways and motorways.
Hyder is working on the "M25 of the Middle East", referring to the Qatari's £3bn Doha expressway project, on which Hyder Consulting recently won a £70m design contract.
Middle East growth is offsetting a difficult European market. German elections have delayed contract decisions, and it is a similar picture in Australia, with some bidding referral around the recent election. However these are short-term, one-off impacts and, with the political backdrop now more secure, long-term construction decisions can be made.
In the most recent trading update, Hyder said currency weakness in the Australian dollar would hurt full-year forecastsand brokers trimmed backprofit expectations.
Investors should focus on the long-term story here, which is very much intact. The shares trading on a PE ratio of 11.8 times forecast 2014 earnings, falling to 10.7 times next year, are therefore on an unfair discount to sector peer WS Atkins (LSE: ATK.L - news) on a PE ratio of 13 times. Buy.
