no-hobby mags, then? (HHO)

hangon - 19 Jan 2005 17:25

Whenever I go into Smiths there is sea of Anoraks that one has to elbow aside, to read Old Steam Monthly ( I get it for the nostalgia) - and HHO has plenty of such Titles including some for the missus.
They also run the Model Engineer Exhibition at Sandown Park (the 2.30 was won by 4-6-2 also known as Lucky Jim)
Howcome there is zero interest (ie Postings) here? Don't you chaps read on the train, or are you armed only with a crumpled FT to fend of Muggers and Poor People?.....

Mindyou as a corporate business HHO are pretty laid-back with their sales efforts....something that might just improve their performance now that Smiths has culled the marginal Mags....... this doesn't include "Shares" which is still available at my local high-street shop.
Chuff, chuff.

Well the Directors at HHO certainly stuffed me! Things were doing OK then the sp drifted down and I should have sold out, yet the mags. are popular.....(but not here it seems)......maybe the deal with Future will be good, they seem to have an eye for a good deal as far as Highbury is concerned: these titles come with much history and consumer support. At worst they do have some titles which could be joined, maybe, but also a great list of potential subscribers to their other titles so maybe an overall advantage to Future.

One must not forget that at one time Future itself was in Doubt with its share about a quarter of current levels - dark days indeed. Highbury bought another Publisher's titles and never really got them into their mainstream - so perhaps they were a distraction, who cares - it looks like a done-deeal and one lives to fight another day.
The Future sp dipped a little on account of the need for cash, I suspect and maybe a concern that Future are no better than HHO at integrating these various titles.
Regards.

Blown out of the water by the Competition Commission. HUH - what competition?
................................................................................
HHO have been shown to be a bunch of losers - good titles and editorials etc. but the business lacks DRIVE.
They need to be promoting their titles with every mag IMHO (and have said so) for people that read about their hobby are just as likely to want to read about something else. Publishers have a real problem with their "overs" so they ditch 'em (keeping a few for back-orders) - what would be so much better would be a Magazine club, if say you take out a subscription for +20% over - then you would receive extra mags as they become available. The postage is "paid for" and the mag is only going to be scrapped - the 20% is pure profit and IT Might result in a second subscription!
HHO lacks Vision - that's IMHO but it looks to be FACT - they couldn't Organise the Proverbial!
The lack of interest in HHO (on investor threads) really says it all - they are boring and likely to go broke - not IF, only When?

hangon - 08 Jun 2005 11:45 - 5 of 36

The Independant (Monday 6 June05 ) had an interesting article on HHO.
More-or-less saying (much better) what I've been trying to say: (see above "No Hobby Mags then?").
As there is zero interest here (in HHO), I am wasting my time expounding any further feelings, other than to say that the Directors should not sleep soundly - they have destroyed what should be an exciting business. People are reading more mag titles than ever before and there is no excuse that HHO Directors can have, when they have made such a FIST of their titles. They should leave quietly, without benefits - which have not been earned.

FONTY - 28 Aug 2005 22:33 - 22 of 36

We don't want McKenzie going in through the back door - we want him to make a take over please!

lizard - 29 Aug 2005 09:13 - 23 of 36

only a matter of time imo!- i am sure he has the necessary people around him to make this happen.

FONTY - 30 Aug 2005 08:27 - 24 of 36

I think this is going to be my 2005 Iomart and I am going to enjoy Christmas - fingers crossed anyway. I am surprised this thread is so quiet. But then Kelvin McK has been clever acquiring stock at the most quiet time of year - the week before August Bank Holiday when every man and their dog Spot and kids are in the South of France. Clever stuff.

I spent the weekend with a publisher friend and we went through the mags that HHO have - they have a few which can be really built up and sold for a fortune and the rest are dogs which need to be binned.

We can see what Kelvin is going to do and it is not difficult. HHO's websites are terrible and their subscriptions website is a disgrace - you have to work really hard to part with your money.

Look forward to this and wonder when others will join us Lizard and John50.

belisce6 - 30 Aug 2005 17:00 - 25 of 36

Fonty......i have been trying to work out their market cap, but can't find much on their website.......any idea what it is ?? (post restructure).

I assume that the final part of the current restructuring is the Board changes which are supposed to take effect at end of next month....

WOODIE - 30 Aug 2005 18:05 - 26 of 36

fonty what will you think he will do ,a full take over or a place on the board?

NielsJensen - 30 Aug 2005 18:11 - 27 of 36

Belisce6: I calculate they have around 317,330,979 shares so you can work it out from that.

FONTY - 31 Aug 2005 00:53 - 28 of 36

Woodie - I think he will really develop the lad mag Front and develop some of the prosperous titles - anything to do with boats etc and dump non lucrative titles like Old Steam Engines!

If I was him and I had the opportunity I would take the whole sad affair over completely and make a killing. Get a brilliant team together, marketing team, attractive leggy blonds with brains on board to develop the 'sexy and powerful' mags and hand it over to my friend. He would turn it around in a couple of years and make a few million.

Alternatively, he could try and get a place on the board but let's face it - a man like Kelvin McKenzie - would he really settle for that? If I was him I would want to get rid of the existing board and be the Chairman and create my own Board. I can't see him playing 2nd fiddle - he's not the sort.

FONTY - 31 Aug 2005 09:11 - 29 of 36

B6 - Market Cap is 9 mil - all the best

WOODIE - 31 Aug 2005 10:48 - 30 of 36

fonty what do you think the take out price would be as the last rns has not moved the s/price much.

FONTY - 31 Aug 2005 13:11 - 31 of 36

I wouldn't like to say but I bought in yesterday and I would like to see myself doubling my money at least but wouldn't we all.

FONTY - 31 Aug 2005 16:23 - 32 of 36

17% up from this morning - just made 1K so hope this is just the beginning.

Snip - 31 Aug 2005 16:28 - 33 of 36

I bought this morning on the basis of this chart. The p+f target is so high that it is off my screen

Chart.aspx?Provider=EODIntra&Code=HHO&Si

lizard - 31 Aug 2005 19:10 - 34 of 36

didn't they recently reject a 10pps offer?- the company is now better positioned with game win.

ateeq180 - 31 Aug 2005 20:48 - 35 of 36

If thats the case we might hit 5p tomorrow,or not.

lizard - 01 Sep 2005 08:41 - 36 of 36

may be not tomorrow?- but perhaps near term.
