Trafficmaster signs 5 year contract to work with Norwich Union on "Pay As You
Drive"TM Insurance

Trafficmaster, the leading supplier of digital traffic information and
intelligent in-vehicle services, has signed a five year contract with Norwich
Union (NU) to deliver "Pay As You Drive"TM (PAYD) insurance services to the
motorist.

Trafficmaster will supply NU with an initial quantity of 10,000 advanced "
black-box" in-car units in the first half of 2006. The black box, which is
already being used for both Trafficmaster's navigation unit Smartnav and
tracking device RAC Trackstar, identifies the location of the vehicle to allow
the delivery of PAYD insurance.

NU customers will be offered comprehensive products that provide cost effective
insurance together with a raft of optional in-vehicle services. These will
include safety camera warnings, Smartnav navigation, emergency and breakdown
calls and stolen vehicle tracking from RAC Trackstar.

Tony Eales, Chief Executive of Trafficmaster, said "This is a major new market
for Trafficmaster as it not only provides large scale deployment of our
in-vehicle units but also provides an opportunity to sell our other compelling
services. The deal provides a new way to deliver Smartnav and it will allow us
to offer insurance products to many of our own subscribers."

Stephen Doran, Director of Business Development at Norwich Union said "Our
partnership with Trafficmaster will allow us to deliver some very compelling new
customer propositions combining "Pay As You Drive" TM Insurance from Norwich
Union with a range of added value in-vehicle services that Trafficmaster will
deliver. Norwich Union have been the pioneers of PAYD insurance in the UK, and
this partnership will allow us to take the programme to the next level."

Norwich boxing clever on car cover

LONDONERS who use their cars only a couple of times a week could be offered cheaper insurance under new plans for pay-asyoudrive insurance.

Norwich Union has ordered thousands of black boxes from navigation systems maker Trafficmaster to roll out its pay-as-you-drive car insurance, which is currently aimed at young drivers.

The insurer offers those aged 18 to 23 the chance to pay insurance according to when and where they drive. For journeys between 6am and 11pm they pay only 6p a mile but that rockets to 1 after 11pm, when most accidents involving inexperienced drivers occur.

Norwich Union has tested the scheme on 1500 young drivers and is examining ways of extending pay-as-you-drive. 'We are certainly looking at how we could use the product for low-usage London drivers,' a spokesman said.

The Trafficmaster black box uses GPS technology and mobile phone communications to tell Norwich Union exactly what a vehicle is doing. Drivers receive a monthly statement with their premium and a log of all the car's journeys.

The contract runs for five years with 10,000 black boxes set for delivery in the first half of 2006. Other features that could be added to the black box are speed camera detection, Smartnav navigation and stolen-vehicle tracking.

It will be good for TFC if this happens and good for me as i have thought TFC were good value for a while now, if it carries on like this I will break even:-)!! Has anyone got any figures as to what the insurance will cost, I have done a few quotes to find out what the restrictions are but it does not give actually cost. At the moment I personally cant see how this way of paying for insurance can lead to cheaper premiums for us and more money for them other than maybe for the very few high risk(who are willing to never use their car) or those people who's car never leaves the drive. But hay! it is still a step in the right direction for TFC!!

Bluedolphin - 05 Oct 2005 15:32 - 12 of 222

in London a lot of people only use there car for going shopping or going out at weekends... same with people in the countryside, and also it will save young people a lot of money too, I can see a lot of car insurance companies losing out to Norwich Union... also people will see that if they go for pay as you go insurance they will get a very cheap satnav as its already in the car.... TOMTOM GO... Adios

HELLO SMARTNAV....

and with cars now being broken in to for sat navs, people with smartnav wont have problems as its not removable ;-)

this is going to be very very big, norwich union has over 1 million customers for car insurance, not only this, if people have the black box in there car and there car gets stolen, nowrich union will instantly know where the car is

thats a very BIG +

Trafficmasters troubled shares got a boost today with news that it has sold 10,000 black boxes to Norwich Union for its Pay-As-You-Drive insurance, although the insurer warns it is early days for the scheme.

Trafficmaster shares (TFC) are up 3.5p to 35.5p, valuing the business at 47.8 million.

The company has modified the software in the Smartnav in-car black boxes it already provides for satellite navigation and traffic monitoring purposes, to enable Norwich Union to collect data from car journeys.

The insurer last year launched its Pay-As-You-Drive insurance scheme for 18-23 year olds, in which drivers pay for insurance based on the mileage they do, and on what time of day they are driving (with penalties for night driving for example). The company also a year ago launched a trial of the system with 5,000 older drivers, which is due to continue for a further six months to a year.

By using the Trafficmaster box, the insurer would be able to offer customers additional services such as safety camera warnings, Smartnav navigation, emergency and breakdown calls and stolen vehicle tracking from RAC Trackstar.

You make a good case. This could be a very effective way of getting smartnav into a lot of cars. Probably better than getting a deal with a manufacturer to get them in new cars like TomTom has. I guess this means that they dont really have to use it as a way of offering cheaper insurance but instead as you say a way of offering value added extras such as camera locations, tracker etc etc.

Bluedolphin - 05 Oct 2005 16:49 - 15 of 222

no, you can expand further... if car manufacturers see nowrich union are fitting the black box, they will follow.... it simplifies things for the manufacturer...

i.e. vauxhall are working together with NU in giving there customers free insurance when they buy a car...

see what I mean.. we have just been given a golden key

you also have to remember the goverment want to introduce road charging..

another golden key for TFC... manufacturers have to follow NU now, and so will the other insurance companies..

we got it made

also note prudential is part of the same group as Norwich Union and friends provident and Elephant.com

Pay-as-you-drive car insurance from Norwich Union
10/10/2005
Norwich Union has purchased high-tech black boxes to chart where and when car owners drive to determine how much insurance they should be paying.

The car insurer believes the navigation system from Trafficmaster will help young people struggling to pay for car insurance and could help Londoners who use their cars on an occasional basis.

The scheme has been tested on a group of 1,500 drivers so far and charges would apply on sliding scale.

For journeys between 6am and 11pm drivers pay only 6p a mile but after 11pm it soars to 1 a mile.

Norwich Union say that the technology, which uses a satellite to track the cars, could be useful in providing other services to drivers including breakdown services and satellite navigation.

Bluedolphin - 10 Oct 2005 10:50 - 21 of 222

Nine in ten people say they would prefer their motor insurance to reflect the usage of their car and the type of journeys they make - with the majority favouring pay "as you go" systems similar to those offered by gas and electricity suppliers.*

Why is it a good idea?
As stated by Robert Ledger, programme director for Norwich Union, "Customers choosing "Pay As You Drive" insurance will benefit from individual premiums based on how often, when and where they actually used their cars. Motorists would receive a fairer deal as this initiative provides them with the opportunity to really be in the driving seat when it comes to controlling their premiums."

What is the scheme?
Norwich Union will be able to collect real-time vehicle data using a 'black box' device installed in your vehicle. This will allow monthly insurance payments to be calculated based on how often, when and where you use your vehicle.

Norwich Union believe this represents a major breakthrough in the calculation of fairer motor insurance premiums and ultimately gives you greater control, flexibility and choice.

The black box device measures vehicle usage and sends data directly to Norwich Union using similar technology to that used by mobile phones. You could be billed monthly and the technology will also allow us to offer you associated in-car services, such as emergency assistance and real-time route planning.

Electrical and Electronic

It was another very difficult month for most, especially in white goods where sales of cookers, refrigeration and laundry continued to suffer from the housing slowdown. Microwaves, floorcare and smaller appliances also suffered, though less than the larger appliances. Brown goods remained generally flat as the weakness of older technology products - the major part of the market - outweighed the few bright spots, notably internet audio and flat-panel TVs. Where supply problems allowed, the new iPod nano sold extremely well, and other internet audio and satellite navigation remained popular. Although computer sales benefited from back-to-school and college, despite unit sales growth, significant price deflation cut sales values. This also affected other new technology products such as digital cameras and mobile phones.

Trafficmaster PLC
Daily Commentary

Our system posted a BUY-IF today. The previous SELL recommendation that was confirmed was made on 26.09.2005 (15) days ago, when the stock price was 33.2500. Since then TFC has gained 8.27% .

Are you still eager to buy? It is O. K., but patience is also a good virtue. The market is thinking to go up but still hesitant. It is better to get the buy permission from the market. Check first what happened at after hours trading and futures. Then, follow the next session very carefully.

Do you see a gap-up at the market open? Do you see a white candlestick forming with a higher close at the session's end? Shortly, is it a nice bullish day? If so, place your buy orders and open new long positions. The market is now on the bull side.

But, be careful, also. If you see a gap-down when the market opens, or if the session closes with a bearish sentiment producing a black candlestick characterized by a lower close, do not challenge the market. Ignore the BUY-IF alert. Cancel the buy orders and cover any new long positions that you might have opened. Bears are still in control.

Black box spy in the car boot

CAR insurance is set for a major shake-up, with pay-as-you-drive policies based on a hi-tech 'spy' in the boot.

The black box devices will log details of all journeys, meaning lower bills for those who drive less often or in daylight. But civil liberties groups will be concerned about the Big Brother aspects of the system, being launched by Norwich Union.

Insurers will know exactly where a client has been and there will be fears that the information could be sold on to other companies. The information in the black boxes will also make it possible to calculate a driver's speed.

The firm says this will not be done unless a driver asks for it - after an accident, for example - but it admits that police could also request details. Pay-as-you-drive policies, in which drivers are asked to pay itemised monthly bills instead of an annual premium, are already popular in the US.

Norwich Union has been offering them to young drivers since earlier this year, as well as running a trial with another 5,000 motorists.

Now the company, which insures one in seven of Britain's 24m drivers, is opening the scheme up to all groups. The black boxes are in constant contact with global positioning satellites to log every detail of a journey - its time, place and length.

The details are transmitted to the insurance company using mobile phone technology. Drivers are sent an itemised monthly statement, similar to a phone bill.

Those who use their cars less often could end up paying considerably less than with their existing premiums. This would be good news for mothers who limit their motoring to the school run or a weekly trip to the supermarket.

Drivers can be charged as little as 6p a mile between 6am and 11pm, because accidents are less likely during the day. At night, however, the charge rockets to 1 a mile. There is also a fixed monthly charge to cover theft and damage while the car is stationary.

A Norwich Union spokesman said: 'It means we can personalise insurance policies. It is a much fairer product.'

Critics warn that many drivers, especially the young and the elderly, will be put off by the likely 200 initial cost of the equipment, which can also be dashboard-mounted.

An AA spokesman said last night: 'Some people will be concerned about having technology which tracks where they are and where they are going'.

The civil rights group Liberty said there would be 'concerns' if information was handed out to third parties. A spokesman added: 'Everything has to be done under the Data Protection Act and used only for the matter specified.'

Paul Smith, of the road safety lobby group M4 Protest said: 'I am certainly worried about the civil liberties aspects. We don't want the police being able to take these boxes and use the data for other purposes.'

Despite the doubts, the initiative by Norwich Union, Britain's biggest car insurer, is likely to force its rivals to follow suit. It will be the most dramatic change in the industry since the launch of Direct Line in 1985, which cut out the middleman and forced down premiums.

Insurance companies have already started to launch more personal products, which can be cheaper than standard deals.

A spokesman for Sheilas' Wheels, which sells women-only insurance, said: 'For too long, motor insurers have paid too little attention to exactly who is behind the wheel, the cars they drive or the journeys they make. With tailored policies, consumers really are in the driving seat.'

But pay-as-you-drive will not suit everyone. High-mileage motorists will still get a better deal from an annual policy.

Switching to pay-as-you-drive has already saved Matthew Smith around 1,000. The 18-year-old passed his test in February, but found a fully comprehensive policy cost 2,000.

Matthew, a health care assistant at Stoke Mandeville hospital in Buckinghamshire, switched to pay-as-you-drive and now pays only some 20 mileage a month, plus a 60 fixed charge. It is less than half his old bill.

He said last night: 'Having my journeys logged doesn't bother me. What matters is the extra financial freedom.'

TheMaster - 25 Oct 2005 12:41 - 31 of 222

This 'pay-as-you-go' insurance is such a good idea, that I have contacted Norwich Union, you pay set fee for the black box and then per daily use of the car 0.30. This is so wonderful if you hardly use your car, like me as a commute to London by train and only use the car at weekends, so good in fact that I am to switch to the system when my motor renewal is due in January 2006. When poeple realise the benifits and forget the big brother issues, as they have in america, this stock will rise sharply.

in 2003 Peugeot was first, then Jeep chrysler... guest what...

look who is going standard fit for satnav in 2006

The Jeep Cherokee now comes equipped with ESP (Electronic Stability Program) and a tyre pressure monitoring system as standard across the model range. The Sport model also has alloy wheels and a spare wheel cover as standard while the Limited model features sat-nav, part-leather trimmed heated seats and an electric sunroof as standard and all for less than the 2005 model.
Simon Elliott, Managing Director of Chrysler Group in the UK said: "The 2006 model boasts a host of new standard equipment but without any price increase. In fact, our best selling Limited model gets heated part-leather seats and sat-nav but is 1035 cheaper than last year!

and more!!!

Sony Sat Nav
Ive bullied this focus group before, but I dont care, they deserve it. Audi TT Owners, May I Have Your Attention Please! Sony has made something silver and shiny for your silver and shiny car.

Similar to Hollywood types who spell names like Jill as Gyll, the nav-u is a suitably preposterous name for its new range of satellite navigation devices. Two units make up the offering, the NV-U50 and the NV-U70T. Each has a large 3.5in colour, touch screen display with 80 degree angle and run Sonys own proprietary (of course) GPS chip.

A dynamic re-routing function and real-time traffic information means both models can adjust journey plans on the fly, while a two way speaker system with 1.6W woofer should ensure clear voice instructions. Map coverage is pretty good, expanding a users chosen region by up to five countries and border areas, including neighbouring cities. The NV-U70T also offers pan European coverage (27 countries with 15 languages), which puts my knowledge of GCSE French into some perspective.

Inside the boxes are a variety of essentials such as the GPS antenna, a car cradle kit and European map package and they will be winging their way to your local shops (hopefully via the most expedient route) in January 2006. Pricing is currently stuck at a red light.

Peugeot promotes Smartnav features of 407
UK 13 Dec 2005

Peugeot: Smartnav online push
LONDON - Peugeot has unveiled a microsite to promote the Smartnav feature in its 407 Saloon and SW models.

An interactive campaign and the site highlight the benefits of the Smartnav location and traffic avoidance system, and support Peugeot's current national television advertising campaign.

The push targets a business audience for potential buyers of the cars with a stress-free driving message.

Benefits of Smartnav are explained in four Flash animations that take the viewer through real-life scenarios, including congestion, accidents and safety cameras, and compare the user journey in a Peugeot fitted with Smartnav and a car without. There are also links to book a test drive and order a brochure.

MRM Worldwide developed the creative for the interactive campaign and website and the campaign will run until the end of March 2006.

Colin Barnard, new-media manager at Peugeot, said: "We are impressed with MRM Worldwide's track record in the automotive sector, and in implementing campaigns targeting consumers where the online strategy is fully integrated into the broader marketing activity."

Tim Reeve, project manager at MRM, said: "This is a genuine thrust forward for MRM and a fantastic client win. The campaign has drawn on our prior experiences and proven expertise in implementing tactical initiatives for major global brands at short notice."

Way to go - get a fix on the perfect sat nav
Satellite navigation systems are the must-have Christmas present. Dave Pollard of The Sunday Times steers you through the contenders

Mark Bourdillon

Once only seen as a built-in option in top of the range executive saloons, satellite navigation has become a sought-after feature of everyday motoring. The explosion of portable systems means that any driver can now set the destination, relax and simply listen to or follow the directions.
But with hundreds of portable systems now available and all the major brands gearing up for Christmas with updated versions, the choice can seem bewildering. So, before you choose, there are a few general rules to consider.

Make sure it is easy to use. Most, but not all, are now operated by touchscreen. On the whole these are the ones to go for: there is nothing more frustrating than scrolling through a never-ending menu, punching buttons and getting nowhere. Touchscreens are simple to use and save time.

There is no point in paying more for a system with high-tech features you will never use. Similarly, if you often travel to Europe there is no point in a system that only has UK mapping.

All the systems below offer a postcode search option. This is by far the easiest way to set your destination. However, many offer just five figures and letters, which can cover quite a wide area. A full seven-character search is far more accurate.

Make sure the device can be operated by batteries. Some need to plugged into the car, usually the cigar lighter, which can be unsightly. But check the lifespan of the batteries, which can range from four to 12 hours.

Her voice might grate, but receiving spoken directions is easier, safer and quicker than having to glance down at the on-screen map every few miles, so make sure the one you choose has audio directions.

Ensure the map on the screen is clear and easy to interpret, even if the system has audio directions. Many newer systems have a 3D image as well as or instead of the flat two-dimensional map. Which one to go for is a matter of personal taste but the 3D map, while looking impressive, can be distracting. The normal map is more useful for spotting upcoming bends.

Take care also with the type of mapping on offer: devices claiming to cover Great Britain do not include Northern Ireland (you will need UK mapping for that) and the Republic of Ireland is not included unless it specifically says so. Theres also a difference between full European mapping (typically 27 countries) and a European base map, which includes only major roads.

You must also decide how much information you want the system to display. Some devices come with speed camera positions loaded as places of interest. These can be useful, but make sure only those cameras covering your side of the road are highlighted, otherwise half the icons will be useless.

One feature lacking in most portable systems compared with fully fitted systems is traffic avoidance. This feeds the sat nav with traffic information gleaned from the radio or dedicated services and recalculates a new route if heavy traffic is reported.

The few portable devices that contain this feature tend to be the more expensive ones. If it is something you particularly want but are reluctant to spend extra on a more advanced device, it might be worth having that information sent to your mobile phone instead. Traffic TV delivers CCTV images of the road ahead to your mobile phone, enabling you to see where the delays are. You can also access Trafficmaster data displayed as a map pinpointing delays. It costs about 40 a year.

Below we have listed our top sat nav systems in the budget, mid-range and premium price brackets. There are many other systems, but our choices are broadly in line with the criteria mentioned above. Prices include those quoted by the manufacturer, but it pays to shop around. We have included an example of the sort of deals available from reliable online outlets.

BUDGET

Garmin Streetpilot i3
293 from Garmin
159 from Comet

This is the cheapest and best value device on the market. It has the smallest screen (1.7in) and is about the size of a cricket ball, making it convenient and very portable. It runs for about six hours on two AA batteries and also from a 12V power source. It doesnt have a touchscreen, but the scroll function is relatively easy to use and it has loads of features, including 3D mapping, voice directions and full seven-digit postcode search.

Navman iCN320
199 from Navman
159.98 from Comet

The closest to Garmin for price, it has a larger screen and is slightly different from other systems as it doesnt show a full map but uses a next direction arrow. This can be confusing at first but is useful once you are used to it, especially where there are turnings in close proximity. Like the Garmin it doesnt have touchscreen, but does have voice guidance and a full postcode search.

MID-RANGE

Garmin c310
352 from Garmin
279.99 from Comet

STAR BUY
This has UK and Ireland mapping and combines style with extremely user-friendly functions. Its system is by far the simplest to use. Inputting the destination on the touchscreen is also made easier with the accurate predictive text feature. One very minor problem is that the mounting bracket has the 12V lead attached (most others are detachable) so that even if you are running the system on battery power you still have the lead hanging down.

TomTom One
279.99 from TomTom
278.47 from Halfords

This looks more conventional than its predecessor but is just as easy to use. It has full UK and Ireland mapping and features new GPS antenna technology, enabling it to pick up satellite signals very quickly. Our test model was the quickest and most accurate of the lot, even in built-up areas where it is sometimes hard to get a signal. However, the touchscreen keys are small, so you need to use your little finger or fingernail to hit them.

Navman iCN 520
349 from Navman
249.99 from Comet

This is small, slim and weighs just 200g, so it is easy to carry, even on foot. The touchscreen is simple to use and comes with a stylus to help input data accurately. The battery is rechargeable. We found the system a little slow in starting up and in locating the satellite signal, and the selector pads located alongside the screen, which can be used instead of the touchscreen, were over-sensitive, resulting in incorrect entries being keyed in.

PREMIUM

Mio 269 Plus Digi Walker
349.99 from Mio

The Mio bristles with features. The 2.5GB hard drive contains full European mapping (13.2m kilometres of road) and has 500MB left over for storage of MP3 files so that you can load up your favourite music (about eight hours worth) and listen to it when not using the sat nav function. The system also comes with headphones and bracket for cycle handlebar mounting.

TomTom Go 700
549 from TomTom
449.99 from Halfords

The Go 700 is the top of the companys tree. The TomTom 500 is equally good but does not include the 700s key selling point its Bluetooth hands-free kit (including speaker and microphone), which can be used to dial up weather information (free) and traffic data via your mobile for an annual charge of about 40. There is also a remote control.

Navman iCN550
599 from Navman
529.99 from Comet

The iCN550 has full European mapping and when bought with the TM 550 module costs 599. This gives TMC (traffic message channel), where details of traffic incidents and delays are picked up and shown on the map. When one coincides with a route the driver is given the option to reroute (this also works in France and Germany). It is the most costly but for high-mileage drivers it is probably the best.

Tfc have been getting closer to VW group for some time.Deals with Audi and Seat. They obviously rate the system. The next step would be a standard fit contract similar to the Peogot ones.
This relationship has vast potential due to the size of the VW group.I think the main thing missing now is advertising.SmartNav should be as well known as TomTom,then sales would fly.Tfc keeps doing the deals,it should give its clients the backing they deserve.

insurance together with a raft of optional in-vehicle services. These will
include safety camera warnings, Smartnav navigation, emergency and breakdown
calls and stolen vehicle tracking from RAC Trackstar.

for Trafficmaster as it not only provides large scale deployment of our
in-vehicle units but also provides an opportunity to sell our other compelling
services. The deal provides a new way to deliver Smartnav and it will allow us
to offer insurance products to many of our own subscribers."

Stephen Doran, Director of Business Development at Norwich Union said "Our
partnership with Trafficmaster will allow us to deliver some very compelling new

black-box" in-car units in the first half of 2006.

F1 black boxes to help learners

Learner drivers will receive printouts of their driving techniques from a Formula One-style black box fitted to cars, under plans being drawn up by BSM, Britains largest driving school.
The company wants to raise the driving test pass rate, which has fallen to its lowest ever level. The boxes would record information such as when and how the clutch, brakes and gears are used. The data would be sent via the mobile phone network to a BSM computer and could be printed out to show pupils exactly where they are going wrong.

The idea was inspired by F1, where computers monitor every aspect of a car and its drivers behaviour. Norwich Union is already pioneering the use of black-box technology with its smart box as part of pay-as-you-drive insurance policies for young drivers.

Is "Pay As You Drive" insurance for me?

Are you aged 18-25?
Do you want fully comprehensive cover?
Do you own a car aged 1986 or newer with a 2.0 litre or smaller engine?
Do you drive mainly between the hours of 6am and 11pm?
If you fall outside this criteria you can register with us to be kept uptodate with further offerings that may be suited to you.

How much could I save?
If you generally drive under 10,000 miles each year then "Pay As You Drive" could save you money.

In fact, Matthew Smith from Aylesbury managed to halve his insurance premium by switching to "Pay As You Drive"

Your monthly bills will be made up of a fixed base premium, which covers risks such as fire and theft. In addition to this are the following variable costs:

The first 100 off-peak miles FREE per month
The next 400 off-peak miles (6.00am - 10.59pm) from as little as 6p per mile
All other off-peak mileage from as little as 4p per mile
All peak mileage (11.00pm - 5.59am) 1 per mile
Call 0800 015 4913 now for an individual quote.

What happens next?
If, after having spoken to one of the call centre advisers, you decide to take out a policy you will be covered immediately and we will arrange for a suitable time for someone to come out and install the Smart Box into your vehicle.

How does this benefit young drivers?
We reward you with cheaper rates between 6am and 10.59pm as younger people are less at risk if they drive between these times so you can control your premiums by controlling when you drive.
The first 100 off-peak miles are FREE every month.
The Smart Box has a stolen car locator so if you notify us that your car has been stolen we can use the built in GPS technology to attempt to locate your car.
You can choose to take advantage of a monthly bill* that details all your journeys so you can help to control your premiums.
If you take out a policy before 31st December 2005 you get your very own Smart Box worth 200 supplied and fitted FREE.

Transport for London
Transport for London (TfL) and Trafficmaster have developed a data exchange system which enables the companies to share data recorded by their respective journey-time recording camera systems and provide accurate, real-time information for Londons motorists.

TfL use traffic monitoring cameras to measure real-time journey times in central London, while Trafficmaster use similar Automatic Number Plate Recognition technology to measure real-time journey times on most of the key routes through inner and outer London. By merging the two data sets, TfL and Trafficmaster is able to offer drivers in London a number of benefits through various elements:

Trafficmasters customers benefit from the shared data, as it offers better routing and journey time information through London for its satellite navigation system, Smartnav and for its other traffic products.

Trafficmaster provides TfLs London Traffic Control Centre (LTCC) with real time traffic information to monitor the performance of Londons road network and allow early detection of delays. The LTCC can then take action to alleviate congestion problems as soon as they occur.

The LTCC shares real-time journey time information with the public through the TfL website, the media and variable message signs (VMS), enabling drivers to plan their journeys and accurately calculate estimated times of arrival.

TfL uses this comprehensive data system to monitor and analyse the long-term performance of Londons main road network. Road improvement and traffic management schemes can then be implemented to help improve the operational efficiency of the roads and reduce congestion.

Peugeot Citroen set to launch mini-size model 207 next week

Posted online: Tuesday, January 03, 2006 at 0211 hours IST

PARIS, JAN 2 : PSA Peugeot Citroen will launch its new mini-sized car 207 next week as it steps up launches to overcome sluggish sales in weak markets, a spokesman at the French firm said on Monday.
The new model will be pitted against the Renault, Clio, selected Car of the Year 2006.

Other B segment rivals are the Fiat, Punto, Ford, Fiesta, VW, Polo, Opel, Corsa and Citroen C3, with which PSA shares a common platform.

The B segment is one of the most hotly contested market areas, and some 3.5 million of these cars are sold each year, mainly to individuals. French 2005 new car registrations, due later on Monday, are likely to show falls in sales at PSA Peugeot Citroen and Renault, which has no new model launches planned until 2007.

The Cetelem consumer credit organisation said last month that it expected new car sales in France to be up 3% in 2005 and rise by 2% in 2006 to 2.12 million vehicles.

European new car sales were down 0.5% at the 11-month stage, with a 2.8% dip in November alone. While Renault is due to unveil a three-year strategy on February 9, PSA Peugeot Citroen has stepped up new model launches.

However, faced with a ramp-up in production of the new models amid weak markets, the group was saddled with excess stock. In October, it reduced its targets for operating profit margin and production.

The 207 will be sold alongside the older 206 model and will be built at Poissy in France and later at Trnava in Slovakia where PSA is investing an additional 350 million euros ($414 million) to boost capacity by 150,000 from the planned 300,000. The Trnava plant is set to start production later this year.

Pay-Per-Mile Car Insurance: It's Coming.
Money as a Tool Finance, Venture Philanthropy, Trade and Economy see all posts in this category

How can you reward yourself for driving less? Or how can you make the costs people pay more closely match their impact on the world?

Car costs are largely divorced from car usage. Sure, you pay for gas as you drive, but for most cars, the average driver pays about as much for insurance as they do for gas; then there's the car's purchase price and maintenance. For the well-off, purchase price and maintenance can be ameliorated by leasing instead of buying. For low-income people, purchase price is as low as they can find, so insurance is often the biggest cost of having a car. Either way, insurance means being stuck with a fixed cost, no matter how much or how little you drive.

Well, not anymore. At least not in some places. Pay-Per-Mile, or Pay-As-You-Drive ("PAYD") insurance means that your insurance payments are based on how much you drive. Such plans have cropped up in places like the UK, Japan, and even a few US states. The Victoria Transport Policy Institute says that PAYD insurance will "help achieve several public policy goals including fairness, affordability, road safety, consumer savings and choice, and reduced traffic problems." Fairness will be improved because the user's financial costs will more closely match their accident risk--to say nothing of their burden on the roads, traffic, and the environment. Fairness between low-income and high-income drivers is also improved, because as the National Organization of Women's Cents Per Mile website details, low-income drivers often have to bear a higher insurance burden than their mileage or real accident risk warrants. Fairness between genders would even be improved--ever wonder why women pay less in car insurance than men? It's because on average they drive 40% less. (Though their discounts are not as big as their reduced risk.) Road safety and traffic will be improved by encouraging people to drive less, of course, and consumer savings and choice will be improved by giving people the option of using PAYD or staying with traditional all-you-can-drive plans.

Why would insurance companies want to offer discounts for people to drive less? Because if you look at the numbers, it works out in their favor: As Environmental Defense writes, "a 10% reduction in driving is estimated to result in a 17% decrease in crashes." Insurance firms' costs would decrease much further than their revenues. Why would insurance companies not want to offer it? NOW's Cents Per Mile site argues that it would expose some of the unfair pricing structures currently used. But proper marketing should be able to handle this, and smart pricing structures should allow them to improve profits while making pricing fairer. One of the biggest obstacles at this point is no one wants to be the first kid on the block, who has to work out all the kinks, then watch as the rest of the industry jumps on the bandwagon later; but again, good marketing should overcome this, by giving the first kid on the block a great reputation with green consumers (who are extraordinarily brand-conscious and brand-loyal).

Paying by mileage requires some technology to measure how much you drive. There are two ways of doing this: either installing a proprietary odometer that has an embedded phone to occasionally call in your mileage, or installing a GPS with embedded phone (like OnStar) to report your actual routes. Obviously, the latter is a huge privacy problem, and has raised stern objections from some groups. But public-policy-wise, it has advantages: it can charge you not only by how many miles you drove, but by where and when you drove them--driving in congested areas during rush hour costs you more than driving off-peak or in traffic-free areas. Whether these benefits outweigh the privacy concerns depends on who you ask.

So who offers PAYD, and how much would you save?

Plans differ, of course, but some offer as much as a 40% discount for people who drive significantly less than average. Norwich Union, the UK's largest insurer, has offered PAYD for about a year. Their system is GPS-based, charging by time and location as well as mileage. In Japan, Aioi has started offering it with an odometer-based system, according to Cascadia Scorecard. In the US, a pilot program was tried back in 1998 in Texas by Progressive Insurance Corp, though it has yet to be rolled out to normal consumers. It was originally GPS-based, but reportedly switched to odometer-based. In 2004, GMAC and OnStar supposedly partnered to make PAYD (or, as they call it, Mileage-Based Insurance) available in Arizona, Indiana, Illinois and Pennsylvania; however, I haven't been able to find places offering it, just the press release. Their system is / would be GPS-based.

How much will per-mile insurance change the world? The Victoria Transport Policy Institute does not expect PAYD to radically alter people's driving habits, but estimates a 5% - 15% mileage reduction if it were universally available in the US. Still, this is a significant impact, and it sets up the right incentive structure; perhaps over time people's habits would change more significantly. When we first mentioned this topic back in 2003, we quoted a Grist article saying: "Dean Baker, codirector the Center for Economic and Policy Research in Washington, D.C., has noted, mileage-based auto insurance 'may be the biggest free lunch around in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.'"

Trafficmaster Plc, the UKs leading provider of real time traffic information, announces a five year agreement with Wayfinder to provide live traffic data on Wayfinder navigation software for mobile phones in the UK. The service will be available from February 1st 2006.

Wayfinder is the UKs leading provider of navigation software for installation onto mobile phones. Trafficmaster will provide real-time traffic information to Wayfinder Navigator software, which will be used to dynamically calculate routes and update traffic information. The traffic service will use Trafficmasters high quality real time traffic flow data to deliver information on the traffic conditions to help users of the Wayfinder navigation software avoid congestion on the UKs motorways and trunk roads.

Jonas Sellergren, VP Product Management from Wayfinder:
"Wayfinder has a pedigree of working with leaders in the technology and mobile service industry. Trafficmaster Plc is delivering highly accurate information on the traffic flows on the UKs major roads. This data will provide a value added solution that will help our customers travel from A to B with ease."

The Trafficmaster service can be downloaded via GPRS onto your mobile phone and will help Wayfinder Navigator calculate the fastest route using the current road conditions. A detour symbol will be displayed if you have to be re-routed around congestion problems allowing you to reach your destination stress free. You can also update the current route with updated traffic information by recalculating the route.

Craig Blount, Director of Trafficmaster Services, comments:
"This is the first agreement that we have entered into to provide Trafficmasters traffic information on to a mobile phone equipped with navigation software. Wayfinder is at the forefront of developing mobile phone based navigation services which are now rapidly emerging as a new segment within the increasingly dynamic market for navigation devices in the UK."

The Trafficmaster traffic information service can be purchased directly through Wayfinder via your mobile phone or through a personal navigation home page - MyWayfinder.com.

FORD PROVIDES SMARTNAV ON FIESTA AND FOCUS ST

For immediate release - 11th January 2006

FORD PROVIDES SMARTNAV ON FIESTA AND FOCUS ST

In a Ford special promotion - The Test Drive Week - all Ford Fiestas and Ford Focus STs will come with Smartnav, an advanced satellite navigation system by Trafficmaster. The campaign, starting on the 14th January 2006, will offer motorists a Smartnav package that includes a 12 month subscription to the navigation service and one month free of Safe Speed, integrated speed camera warnings and RAC Trackstar, a stolen vehicle tracking service.

The Test Drive Week will run across all of Fords 650 plus retailers and will give customers the chance to drive all of Fords models and experience the benefits of Smartnav, before they purchase. The campaign will be supported with regional radio and newspaper advertising and prominent point of sale in the showrooms.

Smartnav was chosen as the standard fit satellite navigation for Fords Test Drive Week because it is very easy to operate and offers the most accurate up-to-date mapping available. This means that drivers can instantly see the benefits of using Smartnav within the test drive.

Pat Gallagher, Director of In-Vehicle Products at Trafficmaster, comments:
"This campaign comes from the successful relationship that Trafficmaster has built with Ford since Smartnav became an approved accessory 18 months ago. This is a great time for Smartnav to be fitted into a car as standard, as people will be looking for their next new car."

In todays Shares Magazine:

Trafficmaster Helped Out of a Jam

Problems with its Smartnav car navigation
system dogged Trafficmaster (TFC) in 2005
but Ford has now given the product a vote of
confidence by announcing a week-long promotional
giveway of the system to all drivers who test drive and
then order a Ford Fiesta or Ford Focus ST.
In December, Shares suggested Trafficmasters
relegation from the FTSE All Share index could
provide a buying opportunity as index trackers
dumped the stock and, sure enough, the shares
troughed at 25.1p shortly after their demotion. But
they have bounced back nicely since.
Non-executive chairman Colin Walsh purchased
100,000 shares at 26p just before Christmas to double
his stake, and his confidence looks well founded.
Trafficmaster has since announced it is to supply
mobile navigation specialist Wayfinder with realtime
traffic information.
The Ford deal, which is being supported by a
high-profile advertising campaign, suggests that
Smartnav is competitive in the standard-fit
market, though portable solutions such as
TomTom still dominate the retail channel.
Trafficmasters balance sheet is net cash so it
can easily sustain its current losses as it sorts out
Smartnav.
A proliferation of road-charging schemes would
be a boost, too: Trafficmasters two-way
communication technology has a clear edge over
portable units as they cannot be used for pay-asyou-
drive schemes.
Shares says: The shares have already
suffered and if relegation from the All
Share pushes them down further,
Trafficmaster would look interesting at just
11 times 2006 earnings

eggbert - 20 Jan 2006 01:02 - 180 of 222

The Ford deal may not be the biggest for Smartnav, the real test will be if Smartnav helps sales for Ford.If sales go well i think we could see this relationship grow.

Trafficmaster plc

Pre-Close and Strategic Update

Trafficmaster Plc today provides a trading and strategic update ahead of its
preliminary results on 21 March 2006.

Trading improved significantly in the second half of the year with operating
profits, for the full year and before exceptional items, expected to be in line
with market expectations of #1.8m. This compares with #0.028m in the first half.
Revenues for the year are also improved and are expected to be #42.3m (2004:
#36.6m).

Our US fleet tracking business Teletrac, which accounts for approximately 50% of
revenue, has had another strong year with revenues up 23% on 2004. During the
year we opened a number of new metropolitan markets in the US and won
significant major accounts.

The strategic review of our UK operations has been completed and the business
has been restructured to deliver growth and sustainable profitability. Three
new operating divisions have been created to deliver a tight strategic focus:
Trafficmaster In-vehicle Products, Trafficmaster Services and Trafficmaster
Technologies.

This new structure has already delivered improvements in our product positioning
together with improved margins and significant cost savings which are expected
to be in excess of #2m per annum from 2006 onwards. This will result in an
exceptional charge in 2005 of #0.6m. This is in addition to the #0.6m for MG
Rover bad debt reported in the first half of 2005.

Trafficmaster In-vehicle Products

Trafficmaster In-vehicle Products concentrates on the sale of Smartnav and
Trackstar hardware. Our business to business focus combined with a simplified
product proposition is proving attractive to OEM partners. These partners are
investing significantly in brand building campaigns for our products. Ford and
Peugeot, in particular, have conducted extensive TV, Radio and press campaigns
supporting Smartnav, our award winning satellite navigation and integrated
traffic information system, in recent months.

Mitsubishi, one of our largest OEM customers in 2005, has extended the contract
to fit Smartnav as standard to a number of models in its range throughout 2006.
Trackstar, our market leading GPS stolen vehicle tracking system, continues to
grow in a stable market.

Trafficmaster Services

Trafficmaster Services is focussed upon generating enhanced recurring revenue
per user by offering the widest range of traffic and vehicle related services
available from one source in the market today. Already, we have made
significant progress on operating margins in this area and are seeing strong
take up in our Safe Speed and Trackstar services on the Smartnav platform.
Trafficmaster Services is also responsible for our traffic information business
which has made excellent progress this year gaining significant market share in
both the automotive and the fast growing portable navigation markets.

Trafficmaster Technologies

Trafficmaster Technologies is responsible for developing new strategic markets
for our black box technologies and our relationships with our partners in these
areas are progressing well. The Transport for London initiative is now providing
live traffic information based on every vehicle entering and leaving the
congestion zone.

Tony Eales, Chief Executive of Trafficmaster commented:

"The actions taken to reposition the business in the latter half of 2005 have
lowered the cost base and improved margins. Trafficmaster is now aligned to
maximise profit from each business and is well placed to benefit from further
revenue growth during 2006."

LONDON (SHARECAST) - In-car satellite navigation specialist Trafficmaster has seen a significant improvement in second half trading, with both revenues and profits ahead of last year.

Operating profits, for the full year and before exceptional items, are expected to be in line with market expectations of 1.8m, compared with 0.028m in the first half.

Revenues for the year are expected to be 42.3m, up from 36.6m.

US fleet tracking business Teletrac, which accounts for approximately 50% of revenue, had another strong year with revenues up 23% on 2004, Trafficmaster said.

The company added that one-off cost savings measures will knock 600,000 off pre-tax profits in addition to a 600,000 bad debt from MG Rover charged in the first half.

Finally, small-cap punters favourite Trafficmaster rose 3.5p to 40p after it said trading improved significantly in the second half. Cost savings meant annual profits will be in line with expectations even after sales fell short, the sat-nav company said.

Bridgewell Securities, Trafficmaster's house broker, raised its rating on thew stock to "overweight" from "neutral" in reaction. "With lingering uncertainties over 2005 now resolved, we believe the leaner and more focused company looks set for a good recovery in 2006," it said.

Motorists could pay up to 80p a mile to drive in London under radical plans to extend congestion charging, instead of a flat daily fee of 8 to travel into the heart of the capital, motorists would be charged according to the distance they travel in greater London.
Transport for London has already fitted four cars with black boxes in sectret trials to see how effectively they can be tracked.
TFL says the results looked "promising".

nurney2000 - 29 Jan 2006 16:15 - 196 of 222

The real secret to this share is the american business.. it is now in the same box as the uk smartnav......
remember MR Eales was boss of that part of the business and he made it....
American profit making standards will apply to the whole outfit

nurney2000 - 29 Jan 2006 16:22 - 197 of 222

will probably do t/o 52 to 59 million T/O in 2006, therefore they are on a sales ratio of 1 and if profits get to 5/6 p per share the p/e is 9 as of sunday night..
It would be reasonable to assume that the share price resulting from such figures would be 80p to 85p. Mr Eales could than cash in a few options now nearly due.
the down side is that the reported profits are an illusion created by inventory sell off.....I will chance them onwards...up a wall of worry regards all

Another deal

LONDON (AFX) - Trafficmaster PLC said it has done deals of undisclosed value with Japanese automakers Mitsubishi Motor Corp and Subaru for its Smartnav satellite navigation equipment.

Trafficmaster said it had signed an agreement with Mitsubishi Motors UK to fit Smartnav into the motor manufacturer's new L200 Animal pick-up.

The Cranfield, Bedfordshire-based group also said it had struck a deal with Subaru to standard-fit Smartnav into its new 'super car', the Impreza WRX STI spec. D.

Trafficmaster said Subaru's decision to choose Smartnav follows its success on a number of Subaru special editions and resulting positive customer feedback.

Smartnav gives the driver up-to-date mapping and real-time traffic

information used to calculate the best route and avoid traffic delays.

Chief executive Tony Eales said the deal with Mitsubishi shows the latter's confidence that Smartnav can add value to its cars.

'Subaru has always been a great endorser of Smartnav,' he added. 'We are delighted that Subaru has put Smartnav into its high specification super car and we look forward to continuing this successful relationship.'

NAVIGATION: Destinator Technologies unveiled Destinator 6 for Windows Mobile
Posted by Arne Hess - at Wednesday, 15.03.06 - 13:39:55 CET under 2 - Pocket PC News - Viewed 403x

Destinator Technologies unveiled it's latest navigation software for Windows Mobile at this year's CeBIT: "Destinator 6". Destinator 6 is the latest in a long line of solid product releases, building on the award winning "Destinator PN", "ND" and "SP" software. Numerous enhancements make Destinator 6 faster and easier to use than ever. With more ingenious functions, features and a completely redesigned user interface, Destinator 6 delivers power and innovation that's accessible by all.

An extension of the TMC service will be introduced together with Destinator 6: Thanks to new technology it will be possible to have international, up-to-date traffic information for a one-time license fee. Destinator 6 will be the first mobile system to combine the use of freely available information broadcast by radio stations and realtime traffic flow data from premium specialist service providers (for example RAC Trafficmaster RDS TMC in the UK) transmitted straight to the navigation device. Only a one off fee is needed instead of the user paying for a rolling subscription. With road traffic volumes on the rise across Europe and some roads already at saturation point, this provides business and private users a crystal ball that enables them to save time and money by avoiding traffic jams long before actually reaching them.

An exciting new feature showcased at the Destinator stand at CeBIT was navigation by means of destinations ("POIs") which have been requested via SMS and will be available later in spring. A new service allows Destinator users to query address data via SMS on a mobile phone. This information can be used as a destination for immediate navigation.

Destinator 6 will be available for both Pocket PCs and mobile phones later this spring with a single unified brand name: "Destinator 6".

Destinator was kind enough to provide a preview Beta of Destinator 6 and so far I can seriously say that Destinator 6 is the best Destinator ever! The new user interface makes the use of Destinator 6 that easy, that even a complete navigation newbie can easily find his way. So far I have played with the Pocket PC version only, can hardly await the Smartphone version.

Cheers ~ Arne
