A Brief Look At The Week Ahead
The banking sector will remain in the spotlight this week. The market will be looking to Alliance & Leicester on Monday, Royal Bank of Scotland on Tuesday and HBOS on Wednesday for similarly good numbers to Lloyds TSB and Barclays who reported last week. RBoS is set for a pre-tax profit of 8bn, but analysts will be running over the numbers with a fine-tooth comb, paying close attention to the return on invested capital. Analysts expect to see a 4.8bn pre-tax profit for HBOS, which it expects will benefit from a more disciplined approach to capital spending. Publishing group, Pearson, is set to report pre-tax profits of 412m for the year on Monday. Analysts expect numbers to reflect the positive trading statement the group made in January. Shareholders will undoubtedly be posing the perennial FT disposal questions but they are unlikely to be answered. Mining group Xstrata is set to follow in the footsteps of rivals BHP Billiton and Anglo American. According to analysts, the miner will post a $1.7bn profit and distribute a hefty dividend when all is revealed on Wednesday. The earnings of British American Tobacco and Gallaher, just two weeks after Parliament voted to ban smoking in public places, will be interestng. Analysts expect BAT to report a full-year pre-tax profit of 2.7bn on Tuesday , 8% up on last year. The following day Gallaher is expected to reveal a pre-tax profit of 565m, just 3% better than the year before. The company is struggling within Western Europe, where increased taxes and smoking and advertising bans throughout have cut into turnover. JD Wetherspoon is set to announce interim results on Friday. Like-for-like sales at pubs where the company is experimenting with a smoking ban have fallen markedly, though Wetherspoon will point out that the performance is misleading, given that the ban will soon affect all pubs. Other companies of interest taking the stage this week include Bunzl on Monday; Alliance Unichem and PartyGaming on Tuesday; LogicaCMG on Wednesday; Arriva and Trinity Mirror on Thursday and Retail Decisions on Friday. A busy week with the financial sector again to the fore! I'm sure you all find something there to profit by. Good hunting! Greystone (Greystone is Alan English, City Editor at MoneyAM.)
