[Site Outage] Outage a few moments ago. (DOWN)

TullettJ (MoneyAM) - 21 Mar 2006 14:37

Hello,

Unfortunately we have needed to restore from a backup everyone's Stockwatch lists, newswatch lists and terminal views.

The backup was from last night (midnight), so any changes that have been made since then will have been reverted.

We're very sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.

J.

abaccus - 21 Mar 2006 15:24 - 2 of 56

Thanks for the info. Thought I'd had a senior momment! Bought some CTM, thought I'd look in and they had gone. Had me questioning myself for a short time

PW Carnell - 23 Mar 2006 08:17 - 3 of 56

These little outages are becoming adaily occurrence particularly with l2 -whats going on?

IanT(MoneyAM) - 23 Mar 2006 08:21 - 4 of 56

PW,

Apologies for this - JT will be looking into it and posting here

Ian

Kyoto - 23 Mar 2006 08:24 - 5 of 56

PW - I'm sure MoneyAM will get on top of these problems eventually. Etrade can't be happy about sending messages out every other day apologising for the loss of the L2 service. They won't get their DMA commissions if their customers can't see the book!

IanT(MoneyAM) - 23 Mar 2006 08:28 - 6 of 56

Let me assure you that we are working on waht has been causing these temporary outages and at this point all I can do is apologise. However, as soon as we have resolved this we will update you.

The site should now be fully operational

Ian

Kyoto - 23 Mar 2006 08:32 - 7 of 56

Ian - I can lend you my old IT hammer if all else fails :-) Good luck with the bug hunt.

TullettJ (MoneyAM) - 23 Mar 2006 08:48 - 8 of 56

Hi,

I believe I have stabilised the site now and I am investigating the cause of these problems.

J.

DITCHPIG - 23 Mar 2006 15:18 - 9 of 56

I know you are trying to compete with @dvfn but there's no need to copy everything they do!

PW Carnell - 24 Mar 2006 16:09 - 10 of 56

l2 down again?

TullettJ (MoneyAM) - 24 Mar 2006 16:11 - 11 of 56

Hello,

I've been working on the outage problems for the last 48 hours or so and have found the cause. I will be working with our software vendor during the coming week to get the root cause resolved.

Thank you for your patience while we resolve these troubles.

J.

IanT(MoneyAM) - 24 Mar 2006 16:12 - 12 of 56

PW,

Should be coming back to you now - again I apologise.

JT has been working on several theories s to why this is happening, and this latest short outage has proved one for him - therefore we should now be able to fully resolve this.

Regards

Ian

PW Carnell - 27 Mar 2006 08:24 - 13 of 56

yet another ?

KEAYDIAN - 27 Mar 2006 08:25 - 14 of 56

Frustrating

IanT(MoneyAM) - 27 Mar 2006 08:26 - 15 of 56

PW,

Again I can only apologise at this point - please rest assured we are working to resolve this, and hope to have a permanent fix in place as soon as possible.

Ian

TullettJ (MoneyAM) - 27 Mar 2006 12:10 - 16 of 56

We have a support request logged with one of our software providers regarding this issue.

Meanwhile we're doing everything we can to stop it from occuring.

Your patience during this time is appreciated.

J.

PW Carnell - 30 Mar 2006 08:26 - 17 of 56

WHY?

KEAYDIAN - 30 Mar 2006 08:29 - 18 of 56

Twice today

TullettJ (MoneyAM) - 30 Mar 2006 08:30 - 19 of 56

PW Carnell,

Please see posts 11,15 and 16.

As soon as there is more information, it'll be posted.

J.

Fundamentalist - 30 Mar 2006 11:12 - 20 of 56

Site seems very poor this am - have had two occasions of "down for essential maintenance"

IanT(MoneyAM) - 30 Mar 2006 11:14 - 21 of 56

Fundamentalist,

Please accept my apologies, we have had technical issues this morning which are related to the problem we are working to resolve. JT will update when he has been able to isolate the cause and resolve it,

Ian

PW Carnell - 30 Mar 2006 11:38 - 22 of 56

Sorry Im not at all happy with that reply in post 19-its almost advfnish in its dismissiveness imo.Patience is not inexhaustible and these problems have been ongoing for over a week. When you have a limited time during the day to trade, its particularly galling and potentially very expensive -we all have crosses to bear and many of us like you also have services to provide and paying customers to satisfy.

IanT(MoneyAM) - 30 Mar 2006 11:47 - 23 of 56

PW Carnell,

You have my apologies - I agree that this problem has become frustrating for our customers to say the very least. Again, I can assure you that the technical team are working on this, and I will as always keep you as updated as possible as and when I can.

Ian

PW Carnell - 30 Mar 2006 12:31 - 24 of 56

Cheers Ian.

antiadvfn - 30 Mar 2006 12:42 - 25 of 56

I thought ADVFN were a bunch of incompetents, now you seem to be joining company with them. This site is a disgrace, your output crashes my computer, freezes my screen and will not permit me to close your site. You lay down injurious 3rd. party tracking cookies on my computer without permission. During the last two weeks for half the time that I am fool enough to access your site I am obliged to shut down and restart to get away from you. I suggest that you look for another occupation and find employment elsewhere - for sure you should not think that anyone is going to give you money, to pay your pension, for enhanced services if this is the best that you can do.

IanT(MoneyAM) - 30 Mar 2006 12:50 - 26 of 56

antiadvfn,

Thank you for your comments - let me assure you I understand your frustrations. I freely admit as you can see by the previous postings on this thread, w have been having a series of short outages over the past week or so.

However, the crashing of your browser, would intimate that you have a deeper problem within your system which is causing this. What browser version are you running, do you have the latest java plugin installed, what operating system are you running?

I would advise you run a windows update as soon as possible, and I would also advise that you reinstall your Java plugin to see if this helps in anyway. The website itself cannot crash your system - the way your system deals with streaming services etc could cause this.

Ian

Seymour Clearly - 30 Mar 2006 12:52 - 27 of 56

Erm, is antiadvfn's a serious post?

These problems are frustrating, but I don't think any of us regulars here would use this site it if it crashed our computers as you suggest. Maybe you need to upgrade your computer or look elsewhere. I don't think the problems you describe are MAM's fault.

TullettJ (MoneyAM) - 30 Mar 2006 13:08 - 28 of 56

antiadvfn,

With regards to thirdparty cookies, if you're using IE _you_ have control over who and what can set cookies on your computer; please see the following URL for more information:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/using/howto/privacy/config.mspx

Further to what IanT and SC have said, if your computer is having difficulties leaving our site then it does sound like a software problem. I'd suggest uninstalling Shockwave, Flash and any other plugins that you have installed and then reinstalling them one by one to see which is causing the problem.

J.

Iain - 30 Mar 2006 13:18 - 29 of 56

And stay of "TheHun" :-)

Kyoto - 30 Mar 2006 13:25 - 30 of 56

Actually, just for information, MoneyAM does crash my computer on occasion but I don't consider it to be MoneyAM's fault. As an ex-IT person I know this seems hard to believe so I better explain my particular circumstances:

I really can't live with Sun Java's non-anti-aliased font rendering which makes MoneyAM look so bad on my displays it's like trying to read some kind of streaming 1980s teletext. I believe this is Sun Java's fault because there's little if any anti-aliasing support in the current version of Java - although apparently this will change for the next version. So, whatever the risks I'm using IE6 with the last version of MS Java - which looks a lot nicer.

However, sometimes - though not always - when MoneyAM grinds to a halt the Terminal window freezes to the extent that it can't be closed and Task Manager reports it as a non-responding application. Manually ending the application leads to the usual error boxes but sometimes also causes (Windows) Explorer to crash, leaving XP frozen or largely unusable, and requiring a reboot. I've had this issue on three different computers during the last year so it isn't limited to some oddity on a single machine.

I'm sure it must be down to MS Java because if Sun Java behaved the same way more people would be complaining about it. That said, it's possible some people who are running older or non-updated computers may still be running MS Java so there's the possibility I'm not the only one who might encounter this.

My system's probably only brought down by MoneyAM once a month so given the upside of more easily readable streaming displays I take the risk and bear the costs!

My problem, nothing for MoneyAM to fix - just explaining that no matter how bizarre it may sound, it can be done :-)

hewittalan6 - 30 Mar 2006 13:28 - 31 of 56

?

Kyoto - 30 Mar 2006 13:30 - 32 of 56

Better yet - if you're using Firefox don't uninstall Shockwave Flash - instead download the Flashblock extension which replaces flash with a button which you can then choose to press to play the Flash content if you want to see it.

You wouldn't believe the number of highly annoying adverts (especially those with sound) this removes. Also, because so many sites plaster four or five Flashlets on a page, you'll welcome how much faster a lot of pages load!

hewittalan6 - 30 Mar 2006 13:32 - 33 of 56

??

jimmy b - 30 Mar 2006 13:38 - 34 of 56

mam's a fine site and iv'e no complaints , however it is sometimes a little slow going to stockwatch and back to trades or investors room, i don't have this problem on any other sites, can anyone explain this please,
PS i also have a computor brain like hewittalan.

hewittalan6 - 30 Mar 2006 13:41 - 35 of 56

I too think MAM is one of the best and have no complaints, but I admit to the site sometimes freezing and having to do the old alt/control/delete to come off-line and unfreeze it.
Don't know what causes it and it happens so infrequently it doesn't bother me.
Jimmy, you can't be as bad as me. I was using the DVD drawer as a cup holder for 6 months before someone told me what it really does.
Alan

jimmy b - 30 Mar 2006 13:51 - 36 of 56

How can you be so stupid Al ,its an ashtray holder cups just slide in to it ,,you'll probably find they will be discontinued soon with all the anti smoking sentiment about.

MightyMicro - 30 Mar 2006 15:00 - 37 of 56

Dear MoneyAM,

I'm using Firefox and Sun Java on an IBM ThinkPad running Windows XP Pro and nothing whatsover is going wrong when I access MoneyAM.

I demand an explanantion ;-)

Kyoto - 30 Mar 2006 15:08 - 38 of 56

MM - so how come nothing whatsoever is going wrong for you when the site keeps going down for everyone else? Can you share the address of the secret backup server with us? :-)

MightyMicro - 30 Mar 2006 15:22 - 39 of 56

Kyoto: Oops, it went down then for a moment. But, as I realize you know, many perceived problems with a service are often due to problems/difficulties/configuration at the client end. But the service provider doesn't manage the client computer and has no control over it. Within an institution, the client-end computer is incredibly carefully managed for just this reason.

There's another adage, which while not strictly relevant, serves to illustrate the problem: "To the end user, most software problems usually look like hardware problems". It's why Microsoft have got away with 25 years of CTRL+ALT+DEL.

MM

klal - 30 Mar 2006 15:22 - 40 of 56

Firefox 1.5.0.1 with Sun Java 1.5.0 on an old-ish MESH PC - never a problem accessing MoneyAM!

hewittalan6 - 30 Mar 2006 15:25 - 41 of 56

I think the "pause" button on my keyboard must be broke.
Whenever I press it, nothing happens.

Priscilla - 30 Mar 2006 15:47 - 42 of 56

In my world of computer ignorance, I find this thread very comforting. I have a very similar experience to Kyoto and always assumed I was doing something dopey when the AM screens kept freezing and the programme was apparently 'not responding'.

But, Kyoto, please could you just elaborate a litle bit on post 32? How do I download the Flashblock extension?

I use IE and Firefox, alternating when one freezes I just reboot and use the other one and so on....

antiadvfn - 30 Mar 2006 16:02 - 43 of 56

I am obliged for the interest, comment and helpful advice. My apologies for any offence caused.

Iain - 30 Mar 2006 16:29 - 44 of 56

Just happened again

Kyoto - 30 Mar 2006 16:42 - 47 of 56

MM - you mean, 'a system without customers is a bug-free system' :-) Such were the sales skills of one of my ex-bosses, suddenly now I wonder whether he wasn't as stupid as I thought...

Yes, PC client setups are a mess - how can a Windows app work in over 40 countries and keep falling over only in Thailand? What is is about the Thai version of Windows? That's when I realised I had to get out of IT :-) I really do sympathise with MoneyAM's IT people on the rare occasions I still allow myself to think about things from their point of view. Shudder!

GRAEME.ALEXANDER - 30 Mar 2006 16:50 - 48 of 56

I am using XP pro with firefox. I have stockwatch(x2),Portfolio(x2), Investors,Traders and Barclays all open in tabs and have not seen a blue screen all day.
If that makes any sence to anyone. Graeme.

Kyoto - 30 Mar 2006 16:52 - 49 of 56

Priscilla - to download the Flashblock extension in Firefox (version 1.5):

1. Select the Tools menu
2. Choose the Extensions option
3. An Extensions window appears, in the bottom right is a link for Get More Extensions, click this
4. A new Firefox window should appear entitled Firefox Add-ons. In the search box enter Flashblock and change the pull-down menu from Entire Site to Extensions
5. The Flashblock extension is found, click this.
6. The full Flashblock page appears with an Install Now window - click the Install Now link
7. A Software Installation window appears, click the Install Now button when it appears
8. This should have installed Flashblock. You'll need to close all Firefox windows and then restart the application, then Flashblock will be working.

This is the teaching you to fish bit... sorry - the direct link is here Flashblock

There are lots of other useful extensions for Firefox such as 'XE Currency Convertor' which you can browse through a library of on the Firefox Add-ons site.

By the way, if anyone is using Firefox but finds there are certain sites which work better with IE, I can recommend the 'IE Tab' extension.

Seymour Clearly - 30 Mar 2006 18:09 - 50 of 56

antiadvfn - well said. It's a nice civilised site here & we like it that way. Hope you'll stick around and contribute.

Priscilla - 30 Mar 2006 20:21 - 51 of 56

Kyoto: Thanks. A lot less 'flashy' bits now. You're a star.

ravey davy gravy - 30 Mar 2006 20:47 - 52 of 56

When it comes to pc's i dont really have a clue, i'm not a nerd :-))

So perhaps a kind reader can help me with this ?

IanT(MoneyAM) - 30 Mar 2006 15:43 - 4616 of 4617
ravey,

This will be a cookie issue - are your cookies automatically deleted? YOu might want to clear your cookies first thing in the morning so that this does not occur. Also if youa re logging on with 2 different browsers at the same time (i.e. IE and Firefox), you will be logged out.

Give the clearing cookies in teh morning suggestion a go and let me know how you get on from tomorrow,

IanT(MoneyAM) - 31 Mar 2006 07:49 - 53 of 56

ravey,

sorry, all you need to do is click on tools at the top of internet explorer and then on dlete cookies.

Let me know if this helps,

Ian
