If you don't have a touch screen, Win 8 is a pain. There is some method of downgrading it to look like more normal Windows.

I now just use the free MS Security Essentials for Chris protection and the free firewall from Comodo.

DO NOT DOWNLOAD COMODO>
It is very intrusive.
Once on your machine there is no way of removing it.
Avast is fine.

Actually after a couple of hours, W8 is growing on me (no touch screen).
I've been advised by a security expert friend to use the proprietary Defender that is integrated into W8 and can be downloaded as MS Essentials with W7.
Any free 'Office' recommendations?

Comodo is very easy to move. I have no problem at all with it. I have been using it in one PC for two years now. My kids have it on their PCs and laptops and so does my wife. I find it quite unobtrusive compared to other free ones I have tried.

Win 8 often is delivered on PCs with Macafee or Norton preinstalled by the PC makers. Both of them are resource hungry and should be replaced.

Hey, Skinners. You might like to try these:
Software tagged 'office'
Kingsoft Office Suite Standard 2012 with 22% off.
Kingsoft Office Suite Professional 2012 with 22% off and there's a
free trial download to check if it's any good

Out of the free AVG or Avast which one is the less power hungry as i hate using excess resources just to use a AntiVirus.

Haystack, it doesn't take much effort to get W8 to look like this.
Also Macafee isn't pre-loaded you are supplied with a software key to download it - which I won't be.

Avast is the best free one for PC's, imo. I also ditched AVG. However I installed Avast on my mobile phone and it slowed it down so much that I had to uninstall it.

The Win 8 picture above is fine, except there is no Start button and the program menus are very different.

Haystack, I was sceptical, but it doesn't take much effort to get it to look 'comfortable'
From the screen above the windows key & 'C' bring up this.

I use it every day and it still irritates me. I have used a touch screen and it is just what it is intended for. The closing of 'apps' is also a pain unless you use Alt F4.

Oooooh lovely. A scantily clad nymph on the foredeck of the boat there and a fast car on the jetty and all would be complete! ;o)

Haystack.
Apologies.
The remove facility has been added long after I installed it.
It did not have it originally.
I'm now on Avast(free) and Private Firewall(free)
