rather than pick out individual stocks to trade, it can often be worthwhile to trade the indices themselves, especially in times of high volatility.
for those so inclined, i attach below charts for FTSE and FTSE 250, though one might equally be tempted to trade Dow or S&P, which is significantly broader in its coverage, or even NASDAQ
for ease of reading, i have attached 1 year and 3 month charts in each instance

london rate cut was like a wet fart!
however, Dow is currently trying to look enthusiastic for last 30 of trading ..... i have already taken a modest profit in that field, but would be delighted to be shown to have taken it far too early

Got a rolling bet open so will just carry through till tomorrow with it, looks like I'll close at a loss but see what tomorrow brings. We're in the bottom section of the 12100/12300 margin so expecting it to break lower soon.

12231 close against 12207 short, -24 points, I can live with that.... Last time it went under 12190 considered buying to short again from higher starting point. Mind of its own Wall St. Considering going long on Morgan Crucible for a rise to 205, anyone else looking at Morgan?

If you want to go long on gold : take a look at AVM (nothing sure) but I've noticed that when gold goes up so does AVM and in reverse, (good 3rd quarter figures)..., and it looks like it might want to tackle the 200p area !

The ole triangle is getting tighter by day, is the next big move just around the corner...???!!!
Short Term Dow
The Dow closed the day within a tight downward-sloping consolidation and is currently holding at the top of the pattern, as seen in the 5 and 15 Minute Charts. Watch 12,260 up, and 12,180 down for a breakout or reversal from the top of this pattern.
Medium Term Dow
In the medium term, we entered the Dow Short at 12,093 today, but lost 20 points on the trade. We are again out of the market and will watch 12,000 down, and 12,300 up; using 20 point stops and disregarding the Breakeven Rule.

Very soon the 30 constituents of the DOW will change.
Bank of America & Chevron are in.
Honeywell & Altria are out.
Not sure if this may affect the DOW medium term as this will now put 3 banks in the DOW. (Citibank, JP Morgan & BoA)

Was hoping today would be a good scalping day, was planing on going long on the dips for 20pts max each time. I only managed one trade at 08:31 at 5730, and waited nearly two hours for 15 pts gain. Not complaining, will still wait for another dip to 5730.
Lets hope the FTSE starts to range from 5720 to 5760

I take it you mean the following breaking news.... (Warren Buffett says he has offered funding to prop up bond insurers, whose shaky finances threaten Wall Street. More soon.) Good to see he has confidence in the industry, which could offer support to DOW.

i wouldnt get too excited. It didnt take to long for street to see through GM's numbers. Sitting on the side lines until momentum is clear. has anyone bought into RIO today. Im taking the risk and shorting overnight as can't see how their numbers can justify the SP if the BHT bid does not go through. Covered with buy order on the June contract just in case it goes pear shaped. :-)

It looks like Warren Guffett had offered funding to the three largest bond insurers, one has already rejected the offer, and still awaiting a reply from other two.
In December, Berkshire Hathaway announced plans to open Berkshire Hathaway Assuarance Corp. a bond insurance business in New York State. Can't see Warren Buffett taking on any poor debt, only AAA+ to his benefit.
It show that the markets were looking for a reason to head up today, so I wouldn't be short this afternoon.

Strikes me that Wall st appears to have had enough of doom and gloom for a bit, and anything positive will lead to a climb, we have seen several down days since start of last week, a lot of bad news is now factored in, so perhaps a slight recovery before the next big down leg???

if your brave enough follow through in the same direction on the Hang Seng overnight as pretty much a 100% correlation, provided shanghai doesnt start a new down trend with playing catch up
