DP, warranties are in addition to statutory rights. In this case you should be able to maintain that the machine was badly built for a product intended to last a few years. For info see

http://www.dti.gov.uk/ccp/topics1/facts/salegoodsact.htm and

http://www.emwlaw.com/legal_services/technology_commerce_law/legal_publications/consumer_warranties_and_guarantees.htm

Also, I would have thought that a reputable company like HP would probably help you out anyway without needing to exert too much pressure.

I wasn't really very happy doing the weird stuff I had dreamed up above. So thanks for the two links and good advice (again). :-)

Your first link (Sale of Goods Act) gave me the 'angle' I required, which was of course to do with the 'play' in the slot.

HP have a Warranty department called 'Exceptions'. They listened to my story and have agreed to send me out a replacement machine. They are arranging this and I expect more details on Monday. The box will have 'return address' labels inside for me to send back my old machine. I fully expect the replacement will have some sort of warranty too and so I should be put back into a better position than I was in before.

I have to say, up until the card reader failure, I was extremely pleased with my D145. New ones now cost 300 whereas I paid about 400 on the internet in July last year.

My wife and I are having great fun using digital photographs and selling stuff on Ebay. This unfortunately ground to a stop with D145's CF Card Reader problem.

Thanks again

Oh dear! What have I done? To access my email, Outlook Express, connected via BT OPenworld, ued to whip through my Hemscott, BT Openworld, BT Internet and Tiscali accounts to check for new mail. Now it stops after Hemscott and the two BT accounts, closes the internet connection and up pops the Dial Connection box for me to re-dial and access the Tiscali mail. What have I ticked or unticked somewhere along the line?

Edited: Sorted by diligent search. In OE/Options/Dial-up I found the "Ask before switching dial-up connections" unchecked. Putting a little tick in the box seems to have solved the problem.

Now I wonder how that came to be unchecked? Curious.

My TFT screen has gone pink - it did it a while ago and I resolved it simply by pressing the auto reset button. Doesn't want to play this time - anyone any ideas ??

Mess with the cables at the back leading into the Comp.Disconnect and re-insert etc. This usually sorts mine out.

Spaceman - 04 Nov 2003 09:19 - 1016 of 11003

mg agree with Iain this sort of thing is normally a loose cable, check it at both ends and if you have a DVI-D9 adapter check thats firmly attached to the cable.

I aggree with the comments above re the most likely cause. However, I had this problem once and it was caused by a faulty video card so your next step should be to try it on another machine.

My emails arrive satisfactorily on Outlook Express and btopenworld except for the recently added Moneyam Mailer. This comes through on btopenworld as extended gobbledegook including lists of fonts and many things that I have never heard of before. What can I do about this you experts?

Optimist - 05 Nov 2003 10:22 - 1019 of 11003

llanteg70

Is Outlook Express set to display HTML content?

llanteg70 - 05 Nov 2003 11:08 - 1020 of 11003

Errrr I think so. If not how come I have no trouble with other similar senders?

Spaceman - 05 Nov 2003 11:54 - 1021 of 11003

Llanteg70, you should check as optimist suggests, do you know for sure that the other emails you recive ar html? They could just be rich text or text. If you are sure post an example of what you are getting, I am sure someome here can assist.

Thanks to Optimist for advice and to Spaceman for twisting my arm.
All I can find in help appears to refer to outgoing messages but I have selected Rich text under New messages-format.
Is this likely to do the trick and can I do anything about messages already received?

Spaceman - 05 Nov 2003 13:57 - 1024 of 11003

Llanteg, I don't have access to o express at the month but you are right about the outgoing messages, it may be something in security settings stopping html can you check that? Stopping html can be a good thing so if you want to do that see if the moneyam stuff can be sent as rich or plain text. I an writing this from a mobile device in the street in barcelona so I can't check more at the moment. Good luck I am sure we will sort this problem out for you

Optimist - 05 Nov 2003 13:58 - 1025 of 11003

llanteg70

From your description it appears that your problem email has been sent in HTML format but that you are viewing it in text mode. I don't often use Outlook Express but if you click Tools-Options and select the read tab and make sure that "Read all messages in plain text" is unchecked.

If this does not work either the incoming message is incompatible with your Outlook Express or you will have to wait for someone to suggest other settings to change.

llanteg70 - 05 Nov 2003 15:29 - 1026 of 11003

Spaceman from a street in Barcelona...I am impressed but perhaps you should be in a tapas bar about now.
Optimist "read all messages in plain text" is unchecked so I am no further forward. I will have to get on to moneyam again I suppose.

Anyone got any ideas as to why my PC would be 'crashing' recently?
It has happened when I have been online each time, but that could
be coincidence.
When it happens both keyboard and mouse wont work
at all. Ctrl,Alt,delete wont work, can't quit out of the screen or
get any response from it at all.
But the really 'dodgy' thing is that the on/off button on the computer
wont operate, it is 'stuck' on, can't be manually turned off,
and the only way to do anything except
sit and look at a frozen screen is to cut the power at source, by
pulling the plug out of the wall socket.
Has happened 4 times this week - getting very worried....
Any ideas would be appreciated - thanks!

Optimist - 06 Nov 2003 15:32 - 1028 of 11003

It could be a hardware problem.

Check that all the fans are working and look for loose connections to the motherboard.

If that does not do it then try swapping memory or even the CPU if you are able to.

Although I'm betting on hardware a software problem is not out of the question so make sure you have scanned for viruses, done a skandisk and disk defrag before you go too far.

Have you got plenty of free disk space?

stockbunny - 06 Nov 2003 15:46 - 1029 of 11003

Thanks Optimist - I'll buy you a drink in GD's tea-rooms!
Yes loads of free disc space - rotten thing is only 18 months old too and
NO I didn't take out any 'extended warrenty' thing either at the time.
I have run a full virus check and that is up to date too.
I have dumped the excess 'stuff' you can which is cluttering things up
like temp.internet files etc and I've emptied the Recycling Bin!
I will de-frag. next - thanks for the idea - it hasn't been done for
about a month so maybe....
Have checked external connections and cleaned what is accessible externally
but do you mean open the box up and take a look at the internal stuff?
Sorry - I'm one of those irritating people who 'just use' their PC
and have no techno. savy!
