How to profit from Betting Exchanges (BEX)

How would you like to trade a market where you get large regular price swings every 10 minutes in the afternoon, seven days a week. A
market where all prices are set purely by supply and demand, few transaction costs, no middle men and you only pay commission if you win? Where you can freely act as a market maker and where you have direct market access and where you can create a spread for others to take?

Betfair has revolutionised the betting market and created an open platform for exchanging risk on sports events. This market is now viewed much more like a traditional financial risk market than an old fashioned betting market. Smart users have realised that there are huge opportunities on Betfair because they can buy and sell risk in much the same way they would in a normal financial market but without the burden of cost or the restricted access that is usually associated with traditional financial markets.

Scrip, you ever thought about designing Pro so that it can interface with other betting exchanges? If Betfair keep this up, it won't be long before customers give them the flick.

pth

this has been going on for a long while on and off, every time it happens people start talking about the other exchanges. the prob is currently they dont have enough liquidity, and if everyone went over there from betfair then they would be likely to suffer the same probs

Steve

Depends if they were to use the same technical muppets who do the Betfair upgrades, I guess. Agree about the liquidity issue though, mind you, Betfair had to start somewhere :-)

Scripophilist - 16 Aug 2006 09:08 - 10112 of 10502

We have looked at BetDaq and the liquidity is poor and we have found it untradable. Also they don't display matched volume so we can't tell how liquid the market is. We have noticed when we try and actively trade the markets the money just isn't there. I don't know if they seed their markets or not but from the way the market acts and the type of liquidity we see I suspect that they are seeded in some way or a cross arbitrage takes place with Betfair.

Betfair's T&C's don't let us display other prices on the same software.

WOODIE - 16 Aug 2006 09:56 - 10113 of 10502

scrip they have changed, the matched trades are shown on the right hand of the screen under history only when in-play or before market closes after market closes and before it is settled you cant get info on matched trades

Hi Woodie, I was thinking more in line with how much in total has been matched on the market. With that in mind you can work out how much is actually being traded on the market. Without that it is hard to know what to commit to market.

We continue to look at BetDaq

WOODIE - 16 Aug 2006 11:48 - 10115 of 10502

scrip it gets back to what you said earlier money traded is to low.

Scripophilist - 17 Aug 2006 15:21 - 10116 of 10502

More problems today anybody?

WOODIE - 17 Aug 2006 15:24 - 10117 of 10502

Scripophilist - 17 Aug 2006 16:07 - 10118 of 10502

I think I had an ISP issues. Was a mare for a while, missed 2 hours of trading.

WOODIE - 17 Aug 2006 16:14 - 10119 of 10502

lots of dosh missed?

Scripophilist - 17 Aug 2006 17:41 - 10120 of 10502

Judging by how others did I missed a good day.

Dil - 28 Aug 2006 20:32 - 10121 of 10502

Another upgrade and another fiasco ... two of their "in play" football matches have been suspended for the last 10 minutes .

Coincidence ?

Dil - 28 Aug 2006 20:38 - 10122 of 10502

Update : One appears to have been suspended because the live feed to German TV went down and in the other one the home team are 3-0 , crowd p*ssed off and hit ref with something and crowd disturbances still not under control ... and thats in Sweden !!!!

Dil - 28 Aug 2006 21:08 - 10123 of 10502

Swedish match abanded and I'm sitting on a winning position , wonder what happens.

Dil - 28 Aug 2006 21:21 - 10124 of 10502

I now think they keep my money for 3 days , then void all bets not decided .... like mine.

Bloody great !

Fundamentalist - 28 Aug 2006 22:39 - 10125 of 10502

Dil
