Press Coverage:

Intelligent label protects foods against counterfeiting and tampering

By Ahmed ElAmin

27/09/2005 - A new intelligent label is designed to protect foods against counterfeiting and tampering, a growing problem for high value products.

UK-based Stanelco today said its PulsLine label provides evidence of tampering which can be detected both visually and electronically, increasing the safety and integrity of a secured product.

Counterfeiting and tampering can undermine consumers trust in the quality and safety of a branded food product, leading to a loss in market share.

Off-the-shelf scanners, printers and software are of such high quality that even novice fraudsters can use them to create labels and packaging for counterfeit branded foods.

According to a report by Canada-based Gieschen Consultancy about $8.5m of counterfeited food and alcohol products were seized by law enforcement agencies worldwide during the first half of this year.

Stanelco claims PulsLine is the first labeling system of its kind to use a special multi-layer laminate construction, which the company has patented. The system uses a security thread similar to the one used for bank notes.

PulsLine identifies products as genuine. For enhanced security, PulsLine is designed to incorporate un-copyable bio-codes, DNA, radio frequency identification tags and holograms.

The thread can also be micro-printed with a company name or logo, which can be revealed by removal of a tab pull. The security thread can be felt by hand.

"In the past, counterfeiters have cut under product security seals in a manner not visually apparent, tampered with the products, then resealed them with the intent of returning the product to a retailer," Stanelco stated. "With PulsLine, a retailer can scan the seal and it will stop where the knife cut the seal, exposing the fraud."

Gieschen Consultancy estimates that seven percent of the world trade is in counterfeit goods worth $350bn, dominated by fake financial instruments. The industries affected also include manufacturers of software, automobile and aircraft parts, pharmaceuticals and consumer goods such as foodstuffs, beverages, tobacco, clothing and personal care products.

Stanelco is a UK packaging company that develops radio frequency (RF) technology, applications and biodegradable materials for food packaging.

The company markets a method to seal plastic food-tray packages using radio frequency technology, called Greenseal. The company claims the technology provides a cheaper and more efficient method heat sealing trays for an industry focused on cost cutting and food safety.

Hi All,

The Business Wire press releases :-

The Naturewoks Press Release was put out to coincide with two Exhibitions where Natureworks were presenting/attending, one in Birmingham NEC, and one in Las Vegas. I can't find info on the Birmingham one, but the Las Vegas is a PackExpo, http://pelv2005.packexpo.com/index.shtml . I take it from this, that Natureworks are going to play a big part in Stanelco's plans.

The Pulsline Press Release was made, because Pulsline is in fact a BRAND NEW product, not the same security tape that appeared on the Aquasol website, or mentioned in previous RNS or the Annual Report.

Cheers,
PM

French retailer stays fresh with PLA

PACK EXPO WEB EXCLUSIVE: NatureWorks reported from the show that French retailer Auchans sales of its salads packed in rigid containers made from NatureWorks PLA have hit the 1 million mark in less than six months.

The leading hypermarket chain will expand the use of NatureWorks PLA to package its line of pastries by the end of the year to an estimated 2.5 million trays.

Our customers response to NatureWorks PLA packaging has been outstanding, says Martial Guglielmi, packaging purchasing director with the Auchan Group. In fact, Auchan is expecting sales to double by the end of 2005 and next year we expect to use 6 million trays made from PLA for gastronomy in the 300 Auchan hypermarkets and Atac supermarkets in France.

PM1

If the Pulsine product is brand new, why wasn't it announced in a RNS as this info does affect the perception people have of the company's future prospects and therefore the share price?
