This is what you need Skinny:

Two graphics cards in a gaming PC

The only observation I would make, skinners, is that I hadn't realised until today that my own cards were over 10 years old (G200s were retired in 2003) and I don't know how much life they've got left.

Sure, they're quality cards, and mine have gone from machine to machine and have outlived the machines themselves. The spare card I've got only came out of its box for the first time today, and I figure I probably bought it 8 or 9 years ago, but you might not get so lucky buying a G200 nowadays. It might be more prudent to look at something a bit newer.

Re the drivers, I seem to remember I downloaded mine directly from the Matrox website.

edit: I also recall that Boyse used to extol the virtues of Parhelia and there was a thread on the go on the pay per view. Dunno if you can search/locate it?

skinny - 10 Apr 2013 19:12 - 10136 of 11003

Yes I remember Boyse and his - WHAT is PARHELIA thread.

From the wiki definition.

"Background

The Parhelia series was Matrox's attempt to return to the market after a long hiatus, their first significant effort since the G200 and G400 lines had become uncompetitive. Their other post-G400 products, G450 and G550, were cost-reduced revisions of G400 technology and were not competitive with ATI's Radeon or NVIDIA's GeForce lines with regards to 3D computer graphics."

On edit :- some familiar names from the past on Boyse's thread!

Windows Blue release date, news and rumors

Microsoft has revealed more details about its Windows Blue project, which promises to bring a big update to Windows 8.

The new features for Windows 8.1 look likely to hit public preview at Microsoft's Build developer conference in June - quite how that will work in practice remains to be seen, but it's likely you won't be able to plug it into an existing Windows 8 install.

HARRYCAT - 11 Apr 2013 22:08 - 10139 of 11003

Bl**dy hell! Microsoft operating systems seem to come out faster than we earn the money to buy them. Just seems crazy that people are prepared to keep updating or is it just instals on new product?

Haystack - 11 Apr 2013 22:29 - 10140 of 11003

That's how they make their money. No new products = no revenue

skinny - 12 Apr 2013 06:07 - 10141 of 11003

Harry - maybe not - I'm not too happy about the last bit (if true).

HARRYCAT - 12 Apr 2013 07:49 - 10142 of 11003

I just wonder how many people who have existing machines are prepared to go out and buy a new operating system to replace the one they bought only 3 years ago. I know that you can usually buy an upgrade to the next version at a reduced price from the full one, which is what Microsoft have presumably now decided is not a good idea, but surely their main market is new PC/tablet/Mobile? Who wants to buy a laptop with a three year old operating system??? Crazy just trying to keep up with this!!! I suppose my XP & Vista will just become unsupported pretty soon, forcing me to change.

skinny - 12 Apr 2013 07:56 - 10143 of 11003

My recent move was XP -> W8.

ATM for me, the jury is out, but there are some nice bits that I've found so far, but in true MS fashion, I've noticed that at certain times, 40% of the RAM (8GB fitted) is being used, although I've not seen CPU usage above 5%.

tyketto - 12 Apr 2013 10:18 - 10144 of 11003

We have support for XP for 11 months
It stops in March next year.

Windows 8. Worth a quick read and a few consumer comments at the bottom to liven things up a bit!

skinny - 19 Apr 2013 10:01 - 10146 of 11003

So far, I haven't really played with many of the features of W8 - but am mildly positive.

Google and Microsoft see a jump in profits

Google's net profit climbed to $3.35bn (£2.19bn) in the first three months of the year, up 16% from a year earlier, boosted by online advertising revenue.

Microsoft said it made $6bn in profit during the same period, a jump of more than 17% from a year ago.

Its earnings, which beat market forecasts, came despite a lukewarm reception for Windows 8 and a decline in global PC sales during the period.

Meanwhile IBM reported a fall in first quarter profits and revenues after the technology services company failed to complete deals in time and was hit by the depreciation of the Japanese yen.
