That's how they make their money. No new products = no revenue

skinny - 12 Apr 2013 06:07 - 10141 of 11003

Harry - maybe not - I'm not too happy about the last bit (if true).

"quite how that will work in practice remains to be seen, but it's likely you won't be able to plug it into an existing Windows 8 install."

HARRYCAT - 12 Apr 2013 07:49 - 10142 of 11003

I just wonder how many people who have existing machines are prepared to go out and buy a new operating system to replace the one they bought only 3 years ago. I know that you can usually buy an upgrade to the next version at a reduced price from the full one, which is what Microsoft have presumably now decided is not a good idea, but surely their main market is new PC/tablet/Mobile? Who wants to buy a laptop with a three year old operating system??? Crazy just trying to keep up with this!!! I suppose my XP & Vista will just become unsupported pretty soon, forcing me to change.

skinny - 12 Apr 2013 07:56 - 10143 of 11003

My recent move was XP -> W8.

ATM for me, the jury is out, but there are some nice bits that I've found so far, but in true MS fashion, I've noticed that at certain times, 40% of the RAM (8GB fitted) is being used, although I've not seen CPU usage above 5%.

tyketto - 12 Apr 2013 10:18 - 10144 of 11003

We have support for XP for 11 months
It stops in March next year.

Windows 8. Worth a quick read and a few consumer comments at the bottom to liven things up a bit!

skinny - 19 Apr 2013 10:01 - 10146 of 11003

So far, I haven't really played with many of the features of W8 - but am mildly positive.

Google and Microsoft see a jump in profits

Google's net profit climbed to $3.35bn (£2.19bn) in the first three months of the year, up 16% from a year earlier, boosted by online advertising revenue.

Microsoft said it made $6bn in profit during the same period, a jump of more than 17% from a year ago.

Its earnings, which beat market forecasts, came despite a lukewarm reception for Windows 8 and a decline in global PC sales during the period.

Meanwhile IBM reported a fall in first quarter profits and revenues after the technology services company failed to complete deals in time and was hit by the depreciation of the Japanese yen.

JAVA SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!

A well known " other company" is offering an alternative, I am tempted.

The Other Kevin - 22 Apr 2013 08:59 - 10150 of 11003

Sorted - I followed instructions on the Java Error Messages.

Balerboy - 22 Apr 2013 09:51 - 10151 of 11003

londongo - 22 Apr 2013 10:22 - 10153 of 11003

Kevin

I have the same problem just now

any help on the stages you went throug once it said ...corrupt

thanks

IanT(MoneyAM) - 22 Apr 2013 10:37 - 10154 of 11003

All,

it seems the java website is up and down this morning, whcih is why you are probably seeing the corrupted message. when the site stabilises, you should be able to run the install correctly.

Ian

The Other Kevin - 22 Apr 2013 10:47 - 10155 of 11003

londongo - On the Java download site I found a grey Help Resources panel on the left. I clicked on the error messages and then download errors and it worked from there. Whether that was because I caught it at one of Java's "up" moments, as Ian mentions, or not I don't know, but it's all right now. Best of luck. TOK

londongo - 22 Apr 2013 11:37 - 10156 of 11003

kevin

it worked, the key was dowloading from offline instead of online, I got the same comment on the net.

so thanks again

MaxK - 26 Apr 2013 09:20 - 10157 of 11003

I have an old laptop thats reached the end of its life.

Needs to go in the bin.

Is it enough (security wise) to remove and smash up the hard drive, or are there other gismos inside that can hold onto info?

Any advice would be appreciated.

HARRYCAT - 26 Apr 2013 09:26 - 10158 of 11003

Yep, that's all you need to destroy. Might be worth taking out the RAM just in case you can use it for another machine.

MaxK - 26 Apr 2013 09:33 - 10159 of 11003

Thats a good idea, thanks Harry.
