My neighbour has an oldish laptop that his daughter gave him with XP on it and it's running very slower then usual, I said I would have a look and thought that clearing the cache would do the trick. Had a good look over the W/E and can't see where I can do this on "his Computer". I cleared his history which made it a little bit quicker and his trash.
When I'm at the library I just go to Tools I think from memory and tick a few boxes and bingo!
So my Q. is, is it because his Laptop OS is to old or what please?

I use CClear to empty temp files and cache

Thanks you 3, I have cleaned the cache and am going to return the laptop to see if it is better under his conditions. One step at a time.

Get CCleaner here:
http://www.piriform.com/
No one should be without it for computer housekeeping purposes.
'Speccy' is a nice little programme too.

What anti virus or firewall is being used? Macafee and Morton often slow down your machine by huge amounts. I use Comodo firewall an MS Security Essentials.

Thanks E/L and H/S,
Was it Avanti or Avast (I saw an icon on the desktop), I can't remember but think it started with an "A". I have returned it and he is going to give it a try for a while and let me know.
The M/C has been handed around his extended family and he is last in the line, so probably a lack of maintenance.. We shall see as I say one step at a time.

Plateman.
Did you delete all the junk that came with it?
and if you did, did it invalidate the programme?
TKS.

Doc - do you use the free version of CCcleaner?

I use the free version of CCleaner. I also periodically use NCleaner. The difference is that it overwrites files with a value, probably low-values (binary 0). The reason for using it is that deleting a file, just removes its directory entry pointing to the file. The data is still there and a technician can fully access it. Therefore, if your data is sensitive you may need NCleaner. It will also clear the supposedly blank area of your disk that still holds files that you have deleted in the past. Because of the way that the filesystem allocates space to files, your data will be sitting there possibly for years.

Haystack - one of my fortes was writing programs to find just such data.
Thanks for the info.

Looking for a Android Tablet i guess the 9inch screen would be best but the 7inch version is much cheaper :-),just require one for hooking upto WIFI at random during the day,so just a basic reliable one.
One thing i hate doing is paying for the must have top brand name products, the bottom line is i am very tight with my money,so looking for the best deal for the cheapest price,i guess it must be the scottish blood in me :o)
Any suggestions please.

My son just bought a new Nexus 7 before going back to uni, Jock. I dunno how to use it, but at least I could see the screen. More importantly, he loves it.
£239 for the one with lotsa Megawotsits of memory from Tesco Direct, less £20 off using a voucher they mailed me.
PS. Make sure it's the 2013 model - 2 cameras - good for selfies whilst twerking.
:o)
