Plateman.
Did you delete all the junk that came with it?
and if you did, did it invalidate the programme?
TKS.

Thanks execline, just installed CC cleaner and works a treat including cleaning the registry. BB

skinny - 09 Oct 2013 15:49 - 10353 of 11003

Doc - do you use the free version of CCcleaner?

Haystack - 09 Oct 2013 16:03 - 10354 of 11003

I use the free version of CCleaner. I also periodically use NCleaner. The difference is that it overwrites files with a value, probably low-values (binary 0). The reason for using it is that deleting a file, just removes its directory entry pointing to the file. The data is still there and a technician can fully access it. Therefore, if your data is sensitive you may need NCleaner. It will also clear the supposedly blank area of your disk that still holds files that you have deleted in the past. Because of the way that the filesystem allocates space to files, your data will be sitting there possibly for years.

Do you use the free version of CCleaner?

Yes. Of course. :-)

skinny - 09 Oct 2013 16:07 - 10356 of 11003

Haystack - one of my fortes was writing programs to find just such data.

Thanks for the info.

Doc :-)

Mega Bucks - 09 Oct 2013 17:54 - 10358 of 11003

Looking for a Android Tablet i guess the 9inch screen would be best but the 7inch version is much cheaper :-),just require one for hooking upto WIFI at random during the day,so just a basic reliable one.

One thing i hate doing is paying for the must have top brand name products, the bottom line is i am very tight with my money,so looking for the best deal for the cheapest price,i guess it must be the scottish blood in me :o)

Any suggestions please.

My son just bought a new Nexus 7 before going back to uni, Jock. I dunno how to use it, but at least I could see the screen. More importantly, he loves it.

£239 for the one with lotsa Megawotsits of memory from Tesco Direct, less £20 off using a voucher they mailed me.

PS. Make sure it's the 2013 model - 2 cameras - good for selfies whilst twerking.

:o)

Haystack - 09 Oct 2013 18:09 - 10360 of 11003

There is a tablet about to be released made by NVidia which will have the best graphics and a quad core processor.

Mega Bucks - 09 Oct 2013 18:20 - 10361 of 11003

Hils, good for selfies whilst twerking.pmsl at that one

Haystacks,will check that tablet out.

Had to pick myself of the floor especially after seeing a price of over 2 hundred quid, though i might be able to use my old sinclair spectrum but lost the power supply :o)

Mega - if you are mainly looking for 9" & WIFI, how about this in today's voucher deals.

Mega Bucks - 10 Oct 2013 07:27 - 10363 of 11003

skinny, thanks for the link, that sounds like a great deal.

Seymour Clearly - 10 Oct 2013 09:08 - 10364 of 11003

I'm thinking about the Nexus 7 as well, however my son just bought a 7" Nook HD. No camera, so no chance of selfies. The screen is fantastic, not a very stylish machine but works very well - it's no longer being made, so a fantastic bargain at £79 for the 8gb model, and you can use SD cards to expand the memory.

Plateman - 16 Oct 2013 12:05 - 10365 of 11003

Tyketto.

Been to sunnier climes for a week so apologies for the delay in replying, no, I didn't delete anything that came with it, so I couldn't say whether or not it affects the operation.

tyketto - 17 Oct 2013 00:49 - 10366 of 11003

Thanks Plateman.
Didn't dowload cause of all the extra space required
on HD plus security.

Greystone - 17 Oct 2013 07:55 - 10367 of 11003

Wifi keeps dropping out on my laptop. Router and line are OK because I can use my
wife's PC on the same network without a problem.

A reboot usually works for a while but it drops out after a few minutes.

I am running Windows XP Professional on a Dell Latitude.

Any advice on finding a cure would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

Alan

klal - 17 Oct 2013 09:07 - 10368 of 11003

Alan, I had a similar problem on my daughter's laptop - a Dell Inspiron running Win7. I worked out that the built-in wireless client was probably giving up the ghost. Bought one of those Micro wireless USB adapters and solved the problem for good. Low-cost solution but brilliant.

Greystone - 17 Oct 2013 09:44 - 10369 of 11003

Thanks Klal - I'll take a look

hilary - 17 Oct 2013 09:59 - 10370 of 11003

Greystone,

Are you using DHCP or a static IP address on the LAN? If you're using DHCP, it might be worthwhile seeing if there's any improvement by moving to a static IP address.

Here's how to assign a static IP in Win XP
