A new non-java Stockwatch is ready to try out - Technical Beta Test

IanT(MoneyAM) - 29 Jan 2014 07:42

As I'm sure you are aware, we and many of you have had a long and tiresome battle with Java when trying to use our streaming services. We have therefore been working on a solution to remove this problem.

We are pleased to announce that we have a new stockwatch available for use which no longer uses Java. We are currently making this available as a technical beta version, which means we are interested in your feedback regarding performance, bugs and browser/operating system/device compatibility issues (note: design and styling will be addressed in later beta releases).

For the purpose of allowing the old and new stockwatch versions to run concurrently, the technical functionality of the new stockwatch mimics the old one for now (not style, fonts or look). Editing and managing watchlists uses the same process as the current java stockwatch but is now at the top of the page. This will allow you to switch between the versions should you have any problems. All technical features of the current stockwatch are available in the new version except for the ability to drag resize columns. In the near future and as we migrate away from the java version of stockwatch, we will add new usability features as well as design it up to make the whole stockwatch experience smoother than it has ever been.

As this new version does not require java, you should expect it to work on your android devices and ipad/iphones. For now the display has not been optimised for smaller screens, but this will come in future development.

NOTE: Due to javascript performance in Internet Explorer 8, this new stockwatch can cause high CPU load. We recommend you use a current version of a modern browser such as Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox for best results.

The new version can be found on the following link:

http://www.moneyam.com/stockwatch/beta.php

NOTE: Non java versions of streaming trades, streaming news and level 2 will be released over the coming weeks.

Please do not worry about design/style at the moment as this version has not been styled it is purely a technical beta test environment it will be styled before it is released. We have put this here purely for feedback on its technical functionality i.e does it work in your browser and on your PC/Laptop/Tablet/Mobile

Please post your technical feedback in this discussion thread

Thank you for your feedback and we hope you enjoy it

As i see it the main thing was to address the reliabilty of the real time feed, and as a result of changing over to the new html5 beta version this has sorted out nearly all the reliabilty problems that was caused by using Java.

The cosmetic layout will be address in the next week or so and maybe ongoing refining the layout.

Its a tremendous step forward and can only get better.

I have found that the columns are now the same for each watchlist, is this a bug or intentional ?
I ask as I have one watchlist which I use to sopy & paste into excel and now the columns are incorrect ...

Excellent on the iPad and my macbook. Stockwatch does not fill either screen though.

Fantastic on my Nexus 7 tablet now can get stockwatch when out and about.
When streaming live trades comes on in a few weeks that's my laptop virtually redundant. Thank you.

The HTML5 version causes even higher CPU activity than the Java version in Opera 12.16 in my XP based machine. Javascript can be switched off in Opera, but HTML5 does not work then. Using the latest Opera 19 or Chrome, which are based on similar engines there is much less CPU use in Chrome with both versions and HTML5 loads faster, but with Opera 19 the CPU activity is initially higher but seems to settle down after a while.

My version has included a column headed Mid Chg. Attempting to remove this via the edit option in "Manage watch lists" I find that it does not appear in the list

George (ex MoneyAM) - 31 Jan 2014 11:50 - 114 of 734

jgharris: Thanks for the feedback. Is Opera 12.16 the latest you can have on XP or is that just your preferred version? I'm just wondering if it's worth us focussing on it or if we should just work with Opera 19.

George (ex MoneyAM) - 31 Jan 2014 11:51 - 115 of 734

DGairn: In the editor screen, as it's for the old stockwatch version, Mid Chg is just labelled Chg.

Mo06: This shouldn't be the case with your watchlists. If you switch back to the Java stockwatch, does it work as you expect?

Mo06 - 31 Jan 2014 12:03 - 117 of 734

George, no I seem to have lost the layout, it's changed even when using Java.

The T.price does not need to be coloured. I would keep the bid, offer and %chg coloured as per the old SW

hpspeel - 31 Jan 2014 12:12 - 119 of 734

Working well for me. I added a new epic to my watch list and it updated without difficulty.

Mo06 - 31 Jan 2014 12:20 - 120 of 734

Please keep the trade price coloured.

Activmoto - 31 Jan 2014 13:22 - 121 of 734

At last money am streams on Android.

the trade colours do not appear to match the trade, ie buy or sell in T.Price. Buys showing in red and vise versa.
