For the moment, and I might well be persuaded otherwise, using Ghostery gives me a much, much faster surfing experience. Indeed, I am totally amazed by the increase in speed on some web sites. I am amazed as to how many tracker thingies some web site are using too.

So...which sort of sucker punter should I choose to be:

1. Slow surfing with no Ghostery. Hmmm? The sites I visit track what I'm doing and where I'm going and get money for it supplying the results to whoever.

2. Fast surfing with Ghostery. Hmmm? Ghostery earn money from inspecting what trackers I shut down and supplying the results to interested parties. Interested parties will then develop more invasive tracking tools which I ultimately will not be able to shut off.

Answer: No. 1 every time. The development of unshutdownable supersonic trackers will come anyway.

Hmmm? Thinks......Must remember to put them back on when I'm shopping through my Quidco.

I guess every little advantage one gets with these tools is but a fleeting one. Use it as long as it provides some advantage.

F5 on my PC keyboard is a refresh command button.
On my new laptop F5 has a different function.
Is there a laptop keyboard command for refresh or do you have to use the cursor every time?

It should be F5 by default - have you assigned a different function to it?

By default the F5 key turns the touchpad On /Off.

Can anyone remind me please how to clear the Java cache.
Running Windows 8.1 and have only the new Java software installed. (Ver 8, update 25)
Can't find it in the Java cpl file.
It allows me to access a https site once and then refuses to let me access it again.
I assume it's the cache as rebooting allows me in only once again.

I have unticked the the 'Keep temporary files on my computer' box, so I assume it should automatically delete them. Have also manually deleted them and still locks me out of https web page without a reboot so...........back to the drawing board!

Microsoft has discontinued sales of computers running consumer versions of Windows 7, effectively pushing people onto the less-popular Windows 8 operating system.

As of 31 October 2014, Microsoft will no longer provide licences for Windows 7 Home Basic, Windows 7 Home Premium, and Windows 7 Ultimate to PC makers – like Dell, Lenovo and HP.

This means it will only be possible to buy a PC with Windows 7 pre-installed until existing stock runs out. All new Windows PC models will run either Windows 8 or Windows 8.1.

The only exception will be business computers running Windows 7 Professional, which will continue being sold for at least another year.

Microsoft will continue to offer mainstream support for Windows 7 until 13 January 2015. Extended support is also guaranteed until 14 January 2020, according to the company's Windows lifecycle fact sheet.

Microsoft has also stopped selling boxed retail copies of Windows 8, which launched in 2012. However, the operating system will still be sold pre-installed on some Windows PCs.

Windows 7 currently accounts for 53 per cent of the desktop operating system market, up from 47 per cent this time last year, according to the latest figures from Net Applications.

Windows XP now accounts for 17 per cent (compared to 31 per cent last year), while Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 together account for 17 per cent (compared to 9 per cent last year).

Windows as a whole accounts for over 90 per cent of the desktop operating system market, compared to around 7 per cent for Apple's Mac OS X operating system, and around 1.5 per cent for Linux.

The next version of Windows, called Windows 10, is due to be released in the middle of next year.

Oh great! So the 8.1 I have just bought is going to be out of date before the ink is dry on the receipt???
