How to profit from Betting Exchanges (BEX)

How would you like to trade a market where you get large regular price swings every 10 minutes in the afternoon, seven days a week. A
market where all prices are set purely by supply and demand, few transaction costs, no middle men and you only pay commission if you win? Where you can freely act as a market maker and where you have direct market access and where you can create a spread for others to take?

Betfair has revolutionised the betting market and created an open platform for exchanging risk on sports events. This market is now viewed much more like a traditional financial risk market than an old fashioned betting market. Smart users have realised that there are huge opportunities on Betfair because they can buy and sell risk in much the same way they would in a normal financial market but without the burden of cost or the restricted access that is usually associated with traditional financial markets.

Scripophilist - 11 Feb 2005 09:12 - 1097 of 10502

Chartist2004 if you give the me open price for the FTSE at 2pm, the OHLC between then and 15:00 (With times) I can work it out for you.

Scripophilist - 11 Feb 2005 09:55 - 1098 of 10502

Incidentally all, brief yourself on the telephone service betfair offer. If I ever have a PC or line failure I have a laptop and GPRS backup, if that is still a problem or there is a glitch on the exchange I have a speaker phone with the Betfair telephone number on it. Two seconds and I am on the line to them and have closed out my position.

Fundamentalist - 11 Feb 2005 12:48 - 1099 of 10502

Blondie - 11 Feb 2005 14:00 - 1101 of 10502

Hi all,

Thanks for the welcome Fundy, tell me is the Bet Ex course a wealth of knowledge
and is it profitable to do it as a full time income thing or is it best to work it around the job you have or could it keep you going if you resigned??

bakko - 11 Feb 2005 15:26 - 1102 of 10502

Blondie,

A warm welcome from me too.

I certainly found Scrip's course an eye opener! Prior to the course I had no knowledge of how betfair worked at all. Although I've made good profits I can't really answer whether you ought to do it part/full time. I still have a full time job and try to be on betfair as often as possible.

I can definitely say that Scrip's course has benefitted me to the tune of s

The downside is that I'm constantly on various sites checking results etc. It's most annoying for the Mrs!! I guess I'll have to treat her more often!!

Harlosh - 11 Feb 2005 16:21 - 1103 of 10502

Anyone else having problems with Betfair? Changes from Today's Card to the Course I happen to be trading on at the time, showing all the races for that course only. Worst of all it keeps switching the refresher off also.

Kayak - 11 Feb 2005 16:41 - 1104 of 10502

Well that was the record for a FTSE change in the auction. Nearly 40 points! If you disregard the value at 16.30 which was already at the destination.

Piptrader - 11 Feb 2005 16:43 - 1105 of 10502

All very odd, but Betfair have just settled at the low figure!

Scripophilist - 11 Feb 2005 16:43 - 1106 of 10502

Missed it what happened?

Scripophilist - 11 Feb 2005 16:45 - 1107 of 10502

Just checked my transaction log, What the hell happened there!!

Scripophilist - 11 Feb 2005 16:59 - 1108 of 10502

My log says:-

4:29:45 - 5004.50 +4.50
4:29:30 - 5044.10 +44.10

Something odd happened in those 15 seconds. Any large stock movers?

Kayak - 11 Feb 2005 17:03 - 1109 of 10502

I suppose if you have the time and inclination you could work out the value given the weightings on http://www.ftse.com and the prices...

Scripophilist - 11 Feb 2005 17:05 - 1110 of 10502

Rumours are there will be a re-adjustment.

Scripophilist - 11 Feb 2005 17:16 - 1111 of 10502

And there it is.

Fundamentalist - 11 Feb 2005 18:16 - 1112 of 10502

Blondie

the course is well worth going on - it will open your eyes to a new opportunity - it certainly did mine. Initially i dont think i would want to rely on it as a sole source of income - you will need time to develop what strategies work for you and possibly develop some additional ones.

stuartreece - 11 Feb 2005 18:49 - 1113 of 10502

Hi everybody

I'm new to all this but have booked for the course on the 23rd Feb. I'm getting myself a bit confused though. In post 1093 above bakko states

"I've just backed at 1.21 and layed off at 1.07"

Am I correct in thinking if plyer 1 wins there will be a profit of 14 (assuming 100 stake) and if plyer 1 looses there would be neither a profit nor a loss - or am I looking at it incorrectly?

Any help gratefully received.
