How to profit from Betting Exchanges (BEX)

How would you like to trade a market where you get large regular price swings every 10 minutes in the afternoon, seven days a week. A
market where all prices are set purely by supply and demand, few transaction costs, no middle men and you only pay commission if you win? Where you can freely act as a market maker and where you have direct market access and where you can create a spread for others to take?

Betfair has revolutionised the betting market and created an open platform for exchanging risk on sports events. This market is now viewed much more like a traditional financial risk market than an old fashioned betting market. Smart users have realised that there are huge opportunities on Betfair because they can buy and sell risk in much the same way they would in a normal financial market but without the burden of cost or the restricted access that is usually associated with traditional financial markets.

Blondie,

I think the answer to that question is simply: whatever is on offer. But it depends on how much you are prepared to risk. Risking 20 on a football match isn't going to make you as much as 200.

Money management is just as important on Betfair as it is on the markets. If you try to make a lot of money very quickly with a relatively small pot you are likely to fail.

I detect from your posts an element of over eagerness to make money quickly. This may lead you to overtrade which will also likely cause you to fail.

Keep the day job and get rich slowly is my advice. I've tried the other way and failed.

Enjoy the course and listen carefully to Scrip. Much of what he say's is said protect you as much as make you money.

Blondie

if its any help so far today i have made 6.16 lol!!!!! As john says, it depends on what your pot is, though it is very feasible to make 8-10% per day imo

not had a good day on the horses, still Arsenal should be good tonight (though will get me in trouble with the missus)

Harlosh - 14 Feb 2005 17:46 - 1140 of 10502

Beat you today Steve, 17 profit. Looking forward to the Arsenal match. Any team news you may be aware of?

Fundamentalist - 14 Feb 2005 17:48 - 1141 of 10502

John

Toure should be back from suspension, Edu may be out having picked up an ankle knock in training

are you trading the snooker? the Stevens v White match has been very volatile - may look at tournament collapse later on

Harlosh - 14 Feb 2005 17:57 - 1142 of 10502

Havn't been doing but will take a look.

Horses were indifferent today, though nice to see the evenings getting lighter.

Re : Match tonight, I think the total goals market is wrong on Betfair. Pricing in too many goals. Some value in there but you would expect Arsenal to get a few.

On the match odds the price should slip to 1.07ish on an Arsenal goal in the first 45 minutes (can't be exact as I can only estimate the timing). Beware the early goal though as the price will move very slowly from there. Cross over point for the draw if no score is 63 mins. In other words at that point onward the draw becomes more likley than an Arsenal win. If no score by half time around 1.60ish HW and 3.23 for the draw, 14's for palace. Next goal market will be around 1.56 by HT if no score. Most likley time for a goal is around 30 mins. Arsenal leading 2-0 will see any value gone. About a one in 20 chance of a Palace 1-0 win.

I will be collecting data on the match so if anybody wants a copy after the match please email me.

(Liberal use of ish here as I am still testing, DYOR etc, You cat is at risk if it runs across the road, etc.)

What a sad state for english football - Arsenal name a squad of 16 without an englishman in sight!!!!!!!

Kayak - 14 Feb 2005 20:01 - 1147 of 10502

Kayak - 14 Feb 2005 20:05 - 1149 of 10502

Oh sorry, you mean race.

I can see you don't live in London :-)

Iain - 14 Feb 2005 20:34 - 1150 of 10502

Thats why I dont watch football any more. They should have some kind of rule, that you cant field a team that is not born within 50 miles or so, I imagine (in my naivety) that a whole lot of money would be ploughed into local sporting Academy if this were the rule.
You get the sport you deserve.
As Johnny Rotten once said" Ever get the feeling youve been cheated"

Kayak - 14 Feb 2005 20:42 - 1151 of 10502

You might be right actually Fundy, having looked at the player bios :-)

Fundamentalist - 14 Feb 2005 20:49 - 1152 of 10502

Kayak

i am right - im a gooner through and through - the starting 11 is 1 german, 1 spaniard, 1 cameroon, 1 ivory coast, 1 brazilian, 1 dutchman and 5 frenchman!!!!

they might all be foreign - but bloody impressive tonight! - to me they look a different side with Edu in the team - if only they had a keeper and a defense...............

Dil - 14 Feb 2005 21:31 - 1153 of 10502

FIFA are bringing in some sort of rule , 4 out of 16 have to be home nationality initially I think.

That'll b*gger Cardiff City's chances when we qualify for the European Cup :-)

Scripophilist - 14 Feb 2005 21:40 - 1154 of 10502

Fundy, Your boys are doing a great job of ruining Palace's goal difference, we want six, we want six.

Fundamentalist - 14 Feb 2005 21:42 - 1155 of 10502

6 scrip - i was hoping for 7 or 8

Scripophilist - 14 Feb 2005 21:56 - 1156 of 10502

I was hoping for around 10 then Southampton wouldn't be far behind Palace's goal difference.

Scripophilist - 15 Feb 2005 09:41 - 1157 of 10502

Looks like last month was a good month for football on Betfair, Just short of 300m in matched bets. Horse racing dipped a bit at 464m (I guess the time of year?). One thing stood out and that was the Cricket at 75m much higher than I have seen for a long time. American football is now getting bigger as well helped by the superbowl at 20m, Tennis a creditable 152m. Total of matched bets was 1.104bn
