Dominique Strauss-Kahn is being held at the notorious Rikers prison in New York after being denied bail.

The head of the International Monetary Fund is in a cramped 11ft-by-13ft cell - less than a week after staying in a $3,000-a-day hotel suite.

Instead of his marble bathroom, a king-sized bed and feather and down duvet from the Sofitel near Times Square, he has only the most basic supplies.

On arrival at the prison the economist was given rudimentary bedding, a drinking cup, soap, shampoo and toothpaste.

He was also physically and psychologically examined before being separated from other inmates in case he is attacked.

Dominique Strauss-Kahn at Manhattan Criminal Court

Mr Strauss-Kahn, 62, has been accused of sexual assaulting a hotel maid at the Sofitel on Saturday when she arrived to clean his room.

He allegedly emerged from his bathroom naked, dragged the maid from the corridor and then attacked her.

The economist was located by police after he rang the hotel to say he had left behind his mobile phone and told staff he was at JFK Airport.

He was removed from a flight by two officers minutes before it was due to take off and returned to the city.

Mr Strauss-Kahn in court as the prosecutors outline the allegations

His legal team insist he is innocent of the charges which include attempted rape, sexual abuse and unlawful imprisonment.

They proposed a $1m bail and said he could wear an electronic tag.

But Judge Melissa Jackson, at Manhattan Criminal Court, denied bail - claiming there was a risk he might flee back to France.

She said: "When I hear your client was at JFK airport about to board a flight, that raises some concerns."

FSA Fines Samuel Kahn GBP1 Million, Secures First Final High Court Injunction

Samuel Nathan Kahn - Date of birth 2 December 1970
The Financial Services Authority or FSA has fined Samuel Kahn GBP1.09 million and obtained a High Court injunction restraining him from committing market abuse.

MAIN FACTS:
-This is the first time the FSA has secured a final injunction from the High Court to prevent market abuse and also the first fine calculated under the new penalties system.

-Between March 24, 2010 and April 30, 2010, Kahn co-ordinated a scheme to deliberately inflate the share price of Global Brands Licensing PLC (GBL), a company quoted on PLU.S. Stock Exchange a Recognized Investment Exchange.

-Kahn orchestrated and controlled the vast majority of the trading in GBL's shares in March and April 2010, disguising his involvement in the scheme by repeatedly impersonating other people when placing orders to trade in GBL's shares and co-ordinating trading conducted by third parties.

-The trading moved GBL's share price from 2 pence on March 24, 2010 to 5.25 pence at its height on April 20, 2010.

-The profits from this trading were withdrawn from a third party's bank account at Kahn's instruction and delivered to him in cash.

-The scheme also involved a significant proportion of GBL's shares being donated to charities.

-These donations were co-ordinated by Kahn and aimed at illegitimately taking advantage of GBL's artificially inflated share price for tax relief purposes and for the purpose of facilitating boiler room activities.

-This aspect of Kahn's scheme was not fully implemented due to the suspension of GBL's shares by PLU.S. on 30 April 2010.

-Kahn has never worked at an authorized firm regulated by the FSA but he was the subject of an FSA investigation and enforcement action in 2007 for his involvement in overseas boiler-room activities.

-In 2008 the FSA made Kahn bankrupt after he admitted liability for claims totaling up to GBP3.7 million made by the FSA on behalf of about 800 investors.

-In light of Kahn's previous misconduct and his more recent actions in GBL, the FSA has obtained an injunction at the High Court restraining Kahn from committing market abuse in future.

-This is the first occasion on which the FSA has exercised its powers under the Financial Services and Markets Act 2000 to obtain a final injunction against an individual to restrain market abuse.

-Kahn qualified for a Stage 1 30% discount on the penalty amount under the FSA's settlement discount scheme.

-The fine of GBP1.094,900 reflects this discount.

IMF chief caught in car romp with tart By NICK PARKER

Published: Today
FALLEN IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn was caught with a hooker in a kerb-crawling district, it was claimed yesterday.
The 62-year-old Frenchman - who denies trying to rape a hotel chambermaid in New York - was allegedly busted by cops in his car in 2007.

He was said to have been in a "compromising position" with the tart in the west of Paris - thought to be the sleazy Bois de Boulogne.

The area is known as a haunt for scores of roadside prostitutes, many of whom are South American transsexuals.

Respected French newspaper Le Monde said the story was "leaked" by sources close to president Nicolas Sarkozy.

They insisted no action was taken against Strauss-Kahn.

The ex-IMF boss - on bail in New York - was set to challenge Sarkozy in France's next presidential election. And his political associates believe he is the victim of a stitch-up.

Meanwhile it was claimed friends of Strauss-Kahn have offered the family of the 32-year-old chambermaid a "seven-figure" sum. They live in an impoverished village in Guinea, West Africa.

A source told the New York Post: "He'll get out of it. The woman will get a lot of money." Other reports claim DNA found on the maid's clothes matches Strauss-Kahn.

Controversy increases over choice of IMF chief

Developing countries are expressing increased concern about the possibility of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) again being led by a European.

Following the resignation last week of Dominique Strauss-Kahn the French Finance Minister, Christine Lagarde, was being widely tipped to take over the post and was being backed by the UK Government.

However, representatives of the Brics countries, Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa said choosing a managing director on the basis of nationality undermined the IMF's legitimacy.

In a statement they said: "The recent financial crisis which erupted in developed countries underscored the urgency of reforming international financial institutions so as to reflect the growing role of developing countries in the world economy."

July 1 (Bloomberg) -- Questions about the credibility of the woman who accused former International Monetary Fund chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn of a sexual attack have placed the case in jeopardy, a person familiar with the matter said. Prosecutors in Manhattan plan to tell a New York state court judge today that their investigation raised doubts about the victims credibility. June 6 (Bloomberg) -- Harvard University law professor Alan Dershowitz talks about the case against former International Monetary Fund Managing Director Dominique Strauss-Kahn. Strauss-Kahn pleaded not guilty three weeks after his arrest on charges of sexually assaulting and trying to rape a Manhattan hotel maid. Dershowitz also comments on U.S. Representative Anthony Weiner's apology today for sending suggestive photos, Twitter messages and other online texts to several women. Questions about the credibility of the woman who accused former International Monetary Fund chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn of a sexual attack have placed the case in jeopardy, a person familiar with the matter said.

Prosecutors in Manhattan plan to tell a New York state court judge today that their investigation raised doubts about the victims credibility, said the person, who didnt want to be identified because the matter isnt public. Prosecutors disclosed the information to Strauss-Kahns lawyers, the person said. The New York Times reported the investigators findings late yesterday.

There will be certain disclosures made about the credibility of the witness, Benjamin Brafman, Strauss-Kahns lawyer, said yesterday in a phone interview. A court hearing scheduled for today will include a request for substantial modifications to Strauss-Kahns bail conditions, he said.

Strauss-Kahn, 62, is awaiting trial on charges of sexually assaulting and attempting to rape a Manhattan hotel maid on May 14. He pleaded not guilty and is free on bail under security conditions that include electronic monitoring and an armed guard.

The New York Times reported that investigators found the French politicians accuser had repeatedly lied to prosecutors and had possible links to people involved in criminal activity such as drug dealing and money laundering. The woman spoke to an incarcerated man over the phone within a day of the alleged assault by Strauss-Kahn and discussed with him the possible benefits of pursuing charges against him, the newspaper reported citing two officials it didnt name.
Townhouse

The former IMF chief is living in a rented townhouse in the Tribeca section of Manhattan, only blocks from the courthouse. Since his release from jail on May 20, he has been allowed to leave home only for legal, medical and religious purposes. He posted $1 million cash bail and a $5 million bond.

Erin Duggan, a spokeswoman for Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr., didnt immediately return a call after regular business hours yesterday. Earlier yesterday, she declined to comment other than to say there was a hearing scheduled.

Kenneth P. Thompson, a lawyer representing the woman, didnt immediately return phone and e-mail messages seeking comment after regular business hours yesterday. Thibault de Montbrial, a Paris lawyer hired by Thompson to search for other women Strauss-Kahn may have victimized, declined to comment.

Todays court hearing is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. before New York State Supreme Court Justice Michael Obus. At Strauss- Kahns arraignment on June 6, Obus had scheduled the next court hearing for July 18.
Midtown Sofitel

Strauss-Kahn is accused of attacking a housekeeper, a 32- year-old from Guinea, at the Midtown Manhattan Sofitel on May 14, grabbing her breasts and trying to pull down her pantyhose, prosecutors have said in court papers. The former IMF chief attempted to rape her and forced her to engage in oral sex, according to the indictment.

In a May 25 letter to the Manhattan district attorney complaining about media leaks in the case, Brafman and co- counsel William Taylor III said that, if they wanted to feed the media frenzy, they could release information that would gravely undermine the credibility of the woman.

The prosecutors office responded in a letter May 26 saying it was troubled by the defense lawyers claims they possessed information that might negatively affect the case and the womans credibility.
Forward Immediately

We are aware of no such information, Manhattan Assistant District Attorney Joan Illuzzi-Orbon wrote. If you really do possess the kind of information that you suggest that you do, we trust you will forward it immediately.

Strauss-Kahn was indicted on seven counts, including criminal sex act, attempted rape, sexual abuse, unlawful imprisonment and forcible touching. If convicted of the top charges, he faces as long as 25 years in prison.

Polls had shown Strauss-Kahn as the potential candidate with the best chance of beating French President Nicolas Sarkozy in next Mays general election. Socialist Party hopefuls have until July 13 to register for their primary, which is scheduled for October.

The case is People v. Strauss-Kahn, 2526/11, Supreme Court of the State of New York, New York County (Manhattan).

NM,

I agree with you Mme Lagarde appears to be highly intelligent, well mannered, competent lady, with a gentle sense of humour, which with the likes of BM she will need.

Looking and listening to interviews of her she comes over as thoughtful and not prone to knee jerk responses.

A good choice, good luck to her.

Dominique Strauss-Kahn arrives for a hearing at the New York State Supreme Courthouse
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Former IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn was released without bail at a New York court hearing for his sexual assault case on Friday.

At a hearing to seek changes to his bail conditions, prosecutors said the credibility of the hotel maid at the centre of the case had been thrown into question.

"I understand that the circumstances of this case have changed substantially and I agree the risk that he would not be here has receded quite a bit. I release Mr. Strauss-Kahn at his own recognizance," Justice Michael Obus told the court.

Strauss-Kahn faces charges including attempted rape, sexual assault and sexual abuse.
