Streaming Charts - Best of Breed (CHRT)

Felix(MoneyAM) - 18 Feb 2003 12:55

I'm currently looking at implementing streaming charts.
For these, we'd obviously like to have 'best of breed' functionality which
is at least as good as equivalent competing products. Of the various
websites that provide streaming charts (e.g. BigCharts.com, Lycos.com,
quote.com, and of course A***N) what features do people especially like?
What additional sites / systems do they use/recommend?
Any input appreciated,
Felix

I would like to say please..please..please leave in an option to switch streaming off. Other websites that have introduced streaming charts end up locking some PCs due to the streaming. This may because of firewall issues, or simply because of bandwidth problems. On public access PCs (such as libraries) streaming often doesn't work (although price streaming with moneyam.com does). I emphasise again that streaming is really only useful on intraday charts where things can change by the minute. When looking at a yearly chart hitting the Refresh button is often all that's needed. I'd rather have a chart that can be seen than a better one that can't....

Thanks for this feedback, brennanr.
Glad you like the ability to specify the timespans for ROC/
momentum/moving average.
To answer your questions:
We plan to keep the static charts and have the streaming
ones as an optional extra. In addition, I'm trying to
give the streaming ones a similar look & feel to the
static charts, even though they use a different display
technology (applets), and to make them as immune as
possible to online stumbling blocks like firewalls.
ROC is just (current price / price n days ago), which
mean-reverts to the value 1. The ROC graph is usually about the
same shape as the momentum graph, as you'd expect.
We do plan to add extra indicators / overlays, but right now
streaming charts are the priority... to say nothing of
day-to-day maintenance of the site,

Felix

hello

It would be useful if a moving average appears on the volume indicator. Be *very* useful if we could set the timespan for a volume moving average, although this would be bells and whistles..

OK brennanr, I'll put it on the wish list.
BTW beta streaming charts have just reached a new level of stability (I hope) so if anyone here would like access, please let me know.

Felix(MoneyAM), I would really like to test the beta streaming chart, and would love to get access please.

Felix(MoneyAM)

I use streaming charts extensively and would be very interested in Beta testing the Money AM ones.

brennanr and andycarr, I've added you. Should be able to see additional
Range option "Streaming". Rightclick to stop the bell if you find it annoying.
Note: this might end up as only a tantalizing sneak preview, since we may
be charging for the charts once they get out of beta.

Hmmmmm... they are free over the road. Mind you, they also don't work terribly well there.

andycarr - 08 Apr 2003 23:25 - 21 of 23

Thanks Felix

Will check the streaming out while trading tomorrow.

Felix(MoneyAM)

To stop the bell when using streaming chart what is it I Right-Click on? Also, I can't see any volume when using streaming.

At present with the non-streaming chart the data is only for up to the previous day. Can it be changed so it is more like A***N charts where the data is up-to-the minute?

Felix(MoneyAM) - 11 Apr 2003 16:42 - 23 of 23

Just right click anywhere in the chart menu.
You should get a menu with 'Toggle Bell' as an option.
Volume, etc aren't in yet - this is an early beta, only does simple
line charts at the moment.
