So Bernie gets his free place in a secure retirement home, but where is the money. Perhaps the feds should start digging on Mt Sion?

sorry to upset you (again), but i do not and never have kept a kosher home.
on a slightly more serious note, i think judaism, along with most other religions sets out a very good philosophy for life, though i do not hold with most of the mumbo-jumbo.
for myself, i think that when i die, the worms get me (actually my wish is to be cremated), and immortality lasts only as long as you are remembered.

cynic we hope you are wrong as we would hate to think Madoff will become immortal as he will certainly be remembered for what he has done to his victims, unless of course the money he and perhaps others stole can be found.

there's a very old joke about a Christian not buying a drink for a Jew because the Jews were responsible for sinking the Titanic

let's see if i can work a truncated version of the joke on here ......
guy in the bar offers a drink to everyone in the bar, "But not for that damn Jew over there.
"Why not?" asks someone
"Because the Jews sank the Titanic, and my grandmother died on it."
"Don't be ridiculous! It was sunk by an iceberg."
"Goldberg, Steinberg, Iceberg - they're all the same!"

Cynic, before I pick on you again. Out of interest you said that the "Jews" were held responsible for the plague because, they suffered proportionally less deaths. You put this down to "hygiene rules". Are you referring to management of food and its preparation, or "personal" hygiene? Just interested.
As far a cremating you, I would be pleased to light the bomb fire for you, if I am still around.
Don't wait too long.

Jews and personal hygiene do not go together, especially those jews with the black hats and curly sidburns. I was in Emirates Dubai lounge earlier this year with a bunch of them, they were smelly and looked like they never took a bath, also their clothes were filthy.

you got surprisingly close then!
i am uncertain of the rules governing personal male hygiene, but certainly women must go to the mikvah at the end of their period .... or at least i think that is correct
=======
after some quick research, the mikvah is for all and also includes the washing of cooking utensils.
though there is no mention of using soap - that was always an unlikely word to find in Deuteronomy! - the implication is undoubtedly that personal hygiene for all is and was a very important aspect of Jewish life.
just for the record, the western concept of washing ones hands, even as a doctor, is comparatively recent - mid 19th century - which is why there was such a high incidence of puerperal fever

Presumably Madoff won't have any problems with his ablutions in his new retirement home, although he may want to watch his back.
