MEDICAL MARKETING, A Speculative Punt That Might Reap Rich Rewards (MMG)

goldfinger - 01 Sep 2004 15:33

This ones a heck of a specualive investment but it seems that the institutions are willing to stomp up the cash to back it in the long term.

Heres the latest news from Killik stocbrokers on the company..........

MEDICAL MARKETING Joint Venture

We recently highlighted Medical Marketing (MMG) as worthy of attention. The company, in which I have a personal share holding, has this morning announced the formation of a joint venture, Genvax, to develop a novel DNA vaccine platform technology.

Human trials have been underway since 2001 in areas such as Lymphoma and Myeloma but the technology has broad applications in cancer, viral and bacterial infections (hence the term platform). The technology works on boosting the immune system by teaching it to identify hard to recognise cancer proteins as foreign and destroy them. Early results from the 25 patient trial in lymphoma are encouraging and evaluation of the result is expected by March 2005. Successful results should mean big pharmaceutical groups will start to take financial and commercial interests around that time.

This looks to be the first of a series of announcements due from Medical Marketing as it has a range of predominantly cancer trials moving into the clinical stage. (news flow could push the price higher)

The stock has made good progress in recent sessions up to the mid-80p level where the company is valued at just under 40 million. ENDS.

Please DYOR

cheers GF.

STOP PRESS * STOP PRESS * STOP PRESS
You heard it here first: Update on Gary Waanders. My broker has spoken to a contact at KBC and understands that Gary Waanders has tendered his resignation. I have just called KBC to verify this and have spoken to someone in his office:

44 (0)20 7418 8900

Conversation Summary:

Is that Gary Waaanders?
No, hes out of the office at present
Has Gary Waanders left the company?
"No, Not yet.
Is He going to leave?
I believe so".
Thanks
Maybe I have, er spoken out of turn here. Can I help you any further?
No thanks. You have been very helpful indeed. Bye.

So a reasonable assumption is that GW has resigned, spookily, but KBC Peel Hunt are muddying the waters by not ejecting him instantly.

So, a low target brokers note, factual inaccuracies, a bear campaign AND a mysterious resignation of the author that supplied the content to kick it all off. The plot doesnt just get thicker, its virtually treacle here.

That's it I'm getting fed up. A large G&T is calling I hope the postings were of interest.

The ramifications of KBC making Waanders fully retract the note could potentially have been huge- if this is true and I have heard it from other sources as well, KBC have used damage limitation- a note is subjective so Waanders was clearly made to rewrite it including new factual information which he had originally got wrong- keeping the same valuation is an opinion and as a result KBC have managed to somewhat cover themselves- but come on, the timing of Waanders resignation can hardly be a coincidence- what will be of interest is whether or not Mr Cawkwell or any other members or associates of T1ps.com took out short positions prior to the initial note being released.

MMI rallies

KBC Peel Hunt said yesterday there was no truth in rumours that the author of a controversial sell note on Aim-listed biotech company Medical Marketing International had been forced to resign.

MMI shares have almost halved in value since analyst Gary Waanders published a research report that claimed the company, which has a cancer vaccine in development, was massively overvalued and its shares were worth no more than 40p.

However, a spokesman for KBC said Mr Waanders had resigned weeks ago because he was joining another stockbroker that specialises in the drug industry.

MMI rallied 17p to 189.5p yesterday as false rumours circulated that Mr Waanders departure was attributable to inaccuracies in the note.
