Jews and personal hygiene do not go together, especially those jews with the black hats and curly sidburns. I was in Emirates Dubai lounge earlier this year with a bunch of them, they were smelly and looked like they never took a bath, also their clothes were filthy.

i am uncertain of the rules governing personal male hygiene, but certainly women must go to the mikvah at the end of their period .... or at least i think that is correct

though there is no mention of using soap - that was always an unlikely word to find in Deuteronomy! - the implication is undoubtedly that personal hygiene for all is and was a very important aspect of Jewish life.

just for the record, the western concept of washing ones hands, even as a doctor, is comparatively recent - mid 19th century - which is why there was such a high incidence of puerperal fever

showers in UK are indeed a relatively new preference to good old fashioned deep tubs, but for running water, try 1870's!
