FTSE + FTSE 250 - consider trading (FTSE)

cynic - 20 Oct 2007 12:12

rather than pick out individual stocks to trade, it can often be worthwhile to trade the indices themselves, especially in times of high volatility.

for those so inclined, i attach below charts for FTSE and FTSE 250, though one might equally be tempted to trade Dow or S&P, which is significantly broader in its coverage, or even NASDAQ

for ease of reading, i have attached 1 year and 3 month charts in each instance

AQP. Broker target 925. Have buy on the system at 820p. Not sure it will get that low, but if there is a selloff, then possible.

cynic - 22 Feb 2008 13:32 - 1231 of 21973

you are only 3p off that target now!

HARRYCAT - 22 Feb 2008 13:38 - 1232 of 21973

Might nudge the offer price down a bit then. 800p looks next support. Bet I miss the boat!

cynic - 22 Feb 2008 13:44 - 1233 of 21973

harry ... you either want to buy the damn things or you don't! ..... if you were truly happy to invest at 820, then do it

HARRYCAT - 22 Feb 2008 13:48 - 1234 of 21973

Of course I do!! I bought them ages ago at 550p & wish I had kept them, but how was I to know that platinum would go over $2000 an ounce?!!!
Might be tempted by your IEC soon also.

cynic - 22 Feb 2008 13:50 - 1235 of 21973

please buy 1m so price will rocket!

HARRYCAT - 22 Feb 2008 13:53 - 1236 of 21973

1m shares or 1m worth?

cynic - 22 Feb 2008 13:55 - 1237 of 21973

either will do - lol

HARRYCAT - 22 Feb 2008 13:56 - 1238 of 21973

If only! :o)

cynic - 22 Feb 2008 14:14 - 1239 of 21973

because i am open on these things, i will tell you all that i have very gingerly gone long of Dow at 13347 ...... common sense tells me it may not be the brightest move, though if Dow drops to around 13225, may buy more (and pray!)

BigTed - 22 Feb 2008 15:20 - 1240 of 21973

Very good of you Richard, to share your position, however, at this time i will not be joining you, due to the size (or lack of...) my nads... oh and i gather you mean 12347...???!

cynic - 22 Feb 2008 17:16 - 1241 of 21973

ouch!! .... serves me right ... gave back what i made last night
still, should not complain, as am still fractionally ahead (until Monday open perhaps!) today vs yesterday and certainly a good week overall

explosive - 22 Feb 2008 18:03 - 1242 of 21973

Just closed my short position, looks like a retrace is in order.

BigTed - 22 Feb 2008 18:05 - 1243 of 21973

Agree, today is not the day... and the pound wont give up yet either!

spitfire43 - 22 Feb 2008 18:13 - 1244 of 21973

dow below 12200 level and holding below. with so many people concentrating on this triangle, I wonder if it is really relevant. Because with so many investors using cfd or sb, and many taking short positions once support is broken, like now. wouldn't be at all surprised to see market spike up to take out the stops. Could the market not be manipulated in this way, falsing people to cover their shorts or being stopped out.

Or could I be talking B*L%*"KS

Falcothou - 22 Feb 2008 18:14 - 1245 of 21973

I noticed that gold and oil started going south when the Dow tumbled earlier on which may be of note when the BIG drop comes!

BigTed - 22 Feb 2008 18:49 - 1246 of 21973

Gotta admit, expected it to bounce back by now, certainly looking comfortable under 12200 at present, although i dont think there is sufficient bad news today to cause a big drop, i'm well aware the triangle has closed up, and 12200 prior to today was considered the bottom of the consolidating zone, when it goes i think it will go quickly but prob not today....

Falcothou - 22 Feb 2008 18:56 - 1247 of 21973

I have heard that the S&P manipulates false break outs to trigger stop losses spitfire so probably the Dow too!

BigTed - 22 Feb 2008 19:23 - 1248 of 21973

So would it work if you opened a position say long on Dow by CFD and hedged with short by spreadbet, then when direction clear, close the losing option...?!

explosive - 22 Feb 2008 19:40 - 1249 of 21973

Been playing the range over 12200 down to 12175 and back up, seams to have really narrowed now, anyones guess which way this will go..
