rather than pick out individual stocks to trade, it can often be worthwhile to trade the indices themselves, especially in times of high volatility.
for those so inclined, i attach below charts for FTSE and FTSE 250, though one might equally be tempted to trade Dow or S&P, which is significantly broader in its coverage, or even NASDAQ
for ease of reading, i have attached 1 year and 3 month charts in each instance

good luck gulf air ..... has a poor reputation locally, akin to "our" klm!
very surprised to hear that AD allows streetwalkers - sounds most unlikely in the extreme to me! ..... you'll often find a good selection of very attractive "professionals" in the hotels, but for sure they will all be "spoken for" :-)
change your $ for AED when you arrive in AD, as otherwise you'll effectively pay for a double exchange

Thanks for that. All I need now then is a few suitable basic phrases in arabic and I shouldn't get ripped off any more than any other traveller! ;o)

just do your homework, perhaps starting with one of the travel guides ..... avoid the "camel tour" like the plague - sounds great, but trust me, it's crap!

It's F1 w/e, which is why I am going, so don't need too much in the way of local amusements, but it is a w/e where pretty much everything from hotel rooms to hooker rates have doubled in anticipation of the super rich arriving. Unless some of my stocks increase considerably in value over the next few months, the locals are going to be pretty p*ssed off with my spending power!

Sounds expensive from what Cynic says Harry, what makes the middle east such a draw for this F1 as a venue?

It's just a convenient time for two of us to go. We have been to most of the European circuits and the Far East & South America are just too expensive for a short trip. It's the third from last race, so hopefully the championship won't be decided by then and also my mate is an avid Ferrari fan, so he's keen to see the glitzy Ferrari World building.
I suppose it all comes down to what we think it's worth spending our money on! Some do golf, some prefer trawling the bars of Bangkok and some like snorting petrol fumes!

Stan - because they want it there to promote the place, and chuck Bernie loads of dosh in paper bags to get the nod ..... they're trying to develop Yas island (where F1 circuit is) into another resort, but it'll be yet another rip-off quarter for the mug tourists, just like The Palm in Dubai and indeed, the whole of the Jumeirah strip
