Im of the same ilk - as i dont have a 9-5 job there is no benefit of a bank holiday and several downsides as you have kindly listed!!!!!

fundy,abersoch,pi**ed down most nights dry in the days,caught some nice bass/pollock/plaice.
a couple of the lads down this way are of to paris,the arc,4 days 159 3*hotel plus course ticket.1st/till the 4th october,i booked a nother trip to monte,charter october 4th/10 from liverpool all in 468 for 2 ,,,,,,no kids ,YES.
