Galleon Holdings (GON)

banjomick - 15 Jun 2004 08:48

INTELLIGENT INVESTING WITH BANJO,well sort of! (Ed-hmmmm-lol)

Galleon Holdings plc has three key divisions:Galleon Entertainment for entertainment type IP,Croco Worldwide for product IP,Phoenix for interactive TV services for broadcasters in China/South East Asia which includes Robot Information Technology (Lushy Assets ('Yunbo')) who are a wireless interactive platform service provider in China who will work alongside Phoenix to enable GON to hold on to a greater part of the generated revenue and so increase the profit margin......think that's the plan! :-)

This makes Galleon Holdings a 'One Stop Shop' to develop and complete new and existing IP's.

I will look into this further some other time but this article relates to the above and maybe to todays news and if I remember right this is China's challenge to 3G but will have to double check on this another time:

China Car TV Industry Report, 2007

Description: In recent years, along with the rapid development of the digital technology and network technology, the broadcast TV field is undergoing great changes. Digitalization not only brings opportunities of technical upgrade and business transformation to cable TV, direct broadcast satellite, and ground wireless TV, but also brings more transmission means and service modes to
broadcast TV, among which in-vehicle TV is one of the most popular business forms.
The annual growth rate of China in-vehicle TV market from 2006 to 2009 will surpass 50%. In 2006, the sales volume of China in-vehicle TV market reached 188,000 units. The figure will approach 600,000 in 2008 due to opportunities brought by Beijing Olympic Games, up over 80% year-on-year. In 2009, the figure will be expected to surpass one million.

banjomick - 14 Aug 2008 23:37 - 1259 of 1609

From 2 years ago and a very interesting read:

"The crux of the issue therefore surrounds the digital terrestrial standard, which SARFT officials have acknowledged will also constitute the cellphone television broadcasting standard. It is now widely expected that the Chinese-developed DMB-TH (Digital Multimedia Broadcasting for Terrestrial/Handheld) will be adopted as the national standard, possibly later this month. The main advantages of digital terrestrial broadcasting over 3G are in cost, speed and picture quality which mean there is little limitation on the number of users. What it lacks are the ability to individualise services and interactivity."

"DMB-based cellphone television trials are already in operation. In October 2004, SARFT authorised Shanghai Oriental Pearl - part of SMG - to set up an L wave band trial. At the same time, the Shanghai authorities cleared DMB for commercial operation in the city. In March last year, Shanghai Oriental Pearl launched its first trial operation and in November Oriental Pearl and SMG set up a joint venture company, the Shanghai Oriental Dragon Mobile Information Co. Ltd. (also known as Dragon Mobile or DMTV), with a registered capital of Rmb20 million, to roll out cellphone television services in the city, with Oriental Pearl having the controlling stake. Over the first half of this year the company has been working to set up around 30 relay stations that, according to company sources, will provide 95 percent outdoor and 80 percent indoor coverage throughout the city. Other major cities in the more economically developed parts of the country, including in Guangdong, Beijing, Sichuan, Shandong and Zhejiang are also working on their own trials."

Pheeeeeeeeew,getting there:

"South San Francisco, CA March 20, 2008 Envivio Inc., the leading technology provider of IP video convergence encoding solutions from mobile to HD, today announced that its 4Caster C4 encoders are being used in extensive broadcast trials in Shanghai that, for the first time, combine AVS video encoding with Chinas standard for digital terrestrial television broadcasting. This is the first large scale evaluation of AVS with the DTMB (GB 20600-2006) Digital Terrestrial Media Broadcasting standard to take place in China. Full commercial roll out of digital terrestrial TV services based on a combination of the two standards is expected to begin later this year.

The three month long trial broadcasts were organized and managed by Shanghai Oriental Pearl Company Limited."

So,I still need to confirm that MMTV (from todays news) is still part of Shanghai Oriental Pearl Company Limited, pretty sure it still will be.

DTMB is for home TV

DMB-TH is for mobile TV within China

Looking into this further there are five main standards for mobile TV,lol CMMB, CDMB, DMB-TH, T-MMB, and CMB..............................crikey!

485 Million to Receive Mobile TV by 2013
Wednesday, June 4th, 2008

CAMBRIDGE, UK The number of people receiving Mobile TV will reach 485 million by 2013 according to predictions made by Cantab Wireless.

Cantab Wireless Ltd has just published a new analyst report: Mobile TV Technologies, Country Cases, and Forecasts for 2008-2013.

This report argues that subscriber growth is anticipated to be strongest in Asia at first, especially in Korea and Japan. From 2010 onwards, Europe and the USA are expected to catch up. Especially in Europe the shortage of radio spectrum before the analogue TV networks shutdown may delay the launch of mobile TV networks in some countries, most importantly in the UK. Also, from 2012-2013 onwards, cellular operators may start providing mobile TV services via their upgraded 3.9G/4G networks, which will offer greatly increased capacity. They will become serious competitors to broadcast TV systems.

The report includes a thorough review of the various mobile TV standards. However, as the author of the report, Dr Juha Korhonen, points out: even more important than choosing the right technical standard is choosing the right business model. It is not yet obvious on how to make money in the Mobile TV business. Various business models have been tried and tested around the world, some successfully, and some less so.

Mobile TV business is a contested area between two established businesses, broadcast TV and cellular telephony. TV broadcasters believe that they should be in charge in the Mobile TV business because they are familiar with the TV business, they have established relationships with content producers and they also often have access to physical broadcast networks. Cellular operators, on the other hand, know the business of mobile devices. They have distribution channels for mobile TV receivers, which are often integrated into mobile phones, and they have contract and charging relationships with mobile customers. However, cellular operators typically do not have access to content, and moreover, they cannot provide mobile TV to masses via cellular networks since these networks currently lack the necessary capacity to do it. Therefore, both parties need each other and a successful mobile TV system has to find a business model which benefits both parties.

The report argues that in the medium term, broadcast Mobile TV systems will be popular. However, in the long run, point-to-point Mobile TV channels, delivered via upgraded high capacity cellular networks, will become a more popular service.

The main topics of the report include:

Technical overview of the broadcast mobile standards: DVB-H, DMB, MediaFLO, 1seg, MBMS, TDtv, CMMB, TBBM, DMB-T/H, CDMB, and CMB.
