Hi Tabasco - I have a Laying and a Backing System and there will be times where each system conflicts with one and other. Thats why its best to have two betting/bank accounts (well for me anyway!) Betfair or Betdaq accounts, one for backing and one for laying.

I hope that makes some sense to you...:-)

Hi Tabasco - As an ex Bookie/Odds compiler can you give any tips on what horses are likely to Steam/Drift in the market before the off from a purely trading perspective? If you can get more predictions right than wrong then we could be onto a winner :-)

Iansteamers and drifters are a regular play for my teamwe have in the past analysed and advised for various clients on early value[some you might know?] I can mark up a race tissue pretty quickif you understand an overound book[to exceed the total probability] you are halfway therethe other 50% involves knowing the actual animal itselfand that is work big time!!! although I am winding down my operations somewhat these daysI still get a buzz out of finding valuethe harder I workthe luckier I get and it is in my blood I very rarely post up for two good reasons

[1] We all get on firstand take the valuethe liquidity is a problem..

[2] I would not use this thread or users to influence a pricenot my style

btw I do get a lot more predictions right than wrongthe bad news is.. we wont be on to a winnerI work alone but wish you every success with your punting

No probs Tabasco fully understand. I would be more interested in identifying 1st and 2nd fav drifters/steamers pre-off say 5 mins or so. The amount of time I have witnessed a 1st fav become 2nd fav and vice versa in a matter of minutes before the off is something else.

What market dynamics change the markets ranking status so quickly? Is it just big players keeping their cards close to their chest then piling on the money at the last minute?

And the amount of times the market gets it wrong when you see 1st, 2nd and 3rd favs drifting by quite some marging then going into to win, sometimes I feel its not the market that has got it wrong but some big players in the know getting it right by deliberately forcing out the price to get far better odds?

It would be great to hear a seasoned veterans take on the above?

IanI could write pages on the subjectwhat I will say is the exchangesand Betfair in particular are now totally the Bookmakers guideany fool can become a Bookmaker!The on-course and SP return are governed through the exchanges
It is important to understand that the liquidity at small A/W meetings on the exchanges makes it relatively easy to direct a price in either directionand for small sums
Now I am not saying it happensbut let us take one of your steamersthe price might be 6/4 in the morning on the exchanges.. representing 40% of probabilityten minutes before the off you could have a rush of money on the exchanges making the runner 4/5 representing 55.56% of probability.you now have a marginfalse or not?
Take the second fav. as being chalked at 3/1...and the real get on horse using 5% of that margin gained could see the price drift to 4/1 or moreon course punters then have a gift manufactured through the exchangesIm sure it doesnt happen Ian?
