Iain, sounds like bad news to me. The latestXP service pack blocks updates for any copies of win XP which have used the 'unconventional' means to obtain a product key, for example to corporate keys which leaked out onto the internet. I think your only solution is to not do the download or to go and buy a legit copy.
Rizz, try the manufacturers web site for XP drivers (or a google search might find it)

It is possible that you have simply transferred a link. Did you use direct cd and drag and drop the files, as I've had that problem myself? If so the technique is to go into Easy CD creator and drag and drop the files that way, or, using Direct CD, having formatted your CD for direct CD, go into windows explorer, highlight all the files or directories you want to copy on the C drive, then click on copy. Then click on the drive you write to (W)to highlight it and then click paste. That usually works. If you already do this and I'm assuming you know less than you already do then I apologise! Let me know how you get on.

Seymour: thank you. I must admit, at this point, I'm too exhausted to try again tonight, and, as the purpose is to back up files so I can upgrade to XP, that is sounding a bit more complex than I realised, reading the posts immediately above this one! Clearly there are indeed problems on upgrades from W98 to XP. Not even so great with a clean installation if it won't recognize Adaptec.

Evening,
Has anybody had any problems with XP and patches? I have recently installed XP and need to update the software, the problem is I'm only on a modem connection and my laptop would need to be running for 6 months to download all the updates!!!! Does anyone know of a way round this? Can MS send out updates via a few million CD's?
Cheers.

Mr Euro
Recently had the same problem with a new notebook. On a V92 modem an 48k it took 5 hours with about 4 restarts.

I have a small problem, trivial but irritating. But that's between me and the Doctor.
About my laptop - I find that using my dial-up modem (whichever ISP I use), the screen shows "verifying user name and password" twice on consecutive lines. After exactly one minute of these messages appearing, I'm then let into the website and all behaves normally. Doesn't happen on my desktop, where I only get one line of "verifying username and password" and I'm stumped where to look to resolve it.
Any ideas anyone?

Thanks Croc, are the updates essential in your view or can I get away without them now I have my super duper security systems :-)

Mr Euro: I am just a few steps behind you in this process. Please keep a note of anything you learn....... I did notice the copyright on my XP programme ended in 2001 and I commented to the installer, 'Good grief, that's some update download'. He snarled.
Don't give up!

Talking about download times. we watched the latest Bond movie over Xmas which my 13 year old grandson had downloaded from Kazaa. How long did it take? Six days he said.
Then another day to convert the formats. It ended up on two CDs.

I have just bought a new base unit, 2.4ghz,to replace my p2400 and it has no operating system installed. What is the best system to use for trading? I have been using 98se on my old pc and it has been locking up at crucial moments which is why I have got the new one. If say I get xp installed can I transfer all my old 98se files over to the new system.
Thanks Dave

Does anyone have experience of setting up a wireless network? I currently use windows internet connection sharing and have a 100 Mbps network via a hub. To add a portable laptop to the set up I understand that I need a Wirless PCcard for the laptop but what about the other end? If I get a wireless access point such as netgears ME102 can I plug it straight into my hub via RLJ45 or is it cheaper and jus as effective to link a wireless point into my PC via USB or PCI?
Finally is the slower speed of wireless a problem when it comes to short term trading and running applicaitions such as CMCs market maker?
thanks

thanks David, I had looked at bluetooth but the range was a concern, one site said 100m and another 10m. If its 10m then I dont think it will do for me as I live in and old property with 3 ft stone walls.
Oh yes I also saw a suggestion that some kitchen appliances can interfer with Bluetooth. I presume you dont have any problems?
thanks

Snip, check in Tools/Options/Send tab that you don't have "automatically put people I reply to in my address book" ticked.
