(China Knowledge)
Hunan TV & Broadcast Intermediary Co. Ltd<000917> reported an earning growth of more than 800% in the first half of the year.
Profits for the company totaled RMB 2.7 million in the first half of the year. Its earning per share (EPS) is deemed to be RMB 0.01.
The company says that the one major factor contributing to the extremely good performance in the first half is the setting up of the Hunan Province Cable TV Network Group Co. Ltd. Rapid development of its cable TV network digitization service has stretched the group's potential.

Lets have a look at what is happening in China/SEA now and in the near future with a few figures thrown in for good measure:
Firstly it might be a good idea to give the reasons why GON are going down the China/SEA route, from January's year end results:
"Operational Strategy
Strategically we have focused on investing in our entertainment division due to the long term returns that we see in this area whilst also driving revenues through the organic growth of Croco our product IP division which has continued to build on earlier successes.
This year both divisions have generated income.Croco continues to grow and we expect our entertainment division to make a significant contribution to performance in the current year.
We have stated that strategically we would be focussing on cross-platform entertainment. With this in mind we turned our attentions to the emerging markets due to their significant TV and online audiences and high mobile phone penetration. This led to the acquisition in October 2007 of Phoenix Global Investment Limited,a provider of interactive television services in China and rest of South East Asia. Ownership of Phoenix will allow Galleon Entertainment's IP to be some of the first to break into China at a crucial time in that market's growth. It also presents opportunities to co-venture with other global media companies anxious to be operational in this territory.
This puts Galleon in a unique position in the marketplace, allowing us to form some interesting strategic alliances going forward. As well as being an owner and manager of cross-platform entertainment content, Galleon now has a business model and channel for distributing cross-platform entertainment into China and the rest of South East Asia."
Also from January's year end results:
"Galleon Entertainment - Phoenix Global Investment Limited
Phoenix specialises in the provision of interactive broadcast television services in China and the rest of South East Asia. Its customers are leading broadcasters in Asia such as Hunan ETV, Hunan Satellite, Guangdong Sports Channel (China) and Media Prima (Malaysia).Phoenix embeds its staff and technology platforms within the broadcaster and from here Phoenix provides the broadcaster with a 'one stop shop' for all interactive broadcast content. This creates a very cooperative business relationship with our customers allowing us to be a part of the broadcast and scheduling process.
Phoenix generates revenues in a number of ways. The most straightforward is through the sale of its interactive media platforms to the broadcaster.Following this Phoenix receives a royalty for the services it provides based on the interactive transactions that take place as a result of the shows that are broadcast on the platform. Since becoming a part of Galleon,Phoenix has been able to widen its discussions to include the provision of content and IP to television broadcasters. This is now creating opportunities to co-produce shows with broadcasters where Phoenix receives a share of profits from all commercial activities including sponsorship and advertising.
During 2008 we anticipate that we will update the market with new broadcaster
service deals and new content deals in South East Asia with particular emphasis
on China."
The next major happening was the acquisition of Yunbo in February 2008:
"Yunbo provides the mobile billing infrastructure for the product offering that Phoenix delivers to its existing broadcast partners. The Acquisition will allow Phoenix to retain the revenues derived from the collection of the SMS and mobile phone revenues generated by Phoenix's existing activities."
"Among Yunbo's customers are major domestic PRC companies such as China Tobacco Hunan Industrial Corporation, Hunan Media Group, Shenzhen Wireless mobile Science &Tech Ltd, and Da Guo Music Recording Studio.Yunbo derives its revenues from transactions involving SMS, MMS, IVR, WAP, ring-tone & ring-back-tone, and KJAVA games.
That's the quick history guide...........................

Super Soccer Star-I think there were 13 episodes and was broadcast on Guangdong TV Sports Channel (one of China's largest regional
broadcasters) with 50 million estimated viewers.
"The Super Soccer Star Show will provide a mix of football and entertainment as well as interactive content for viewers. The show aims to promote football skills and fitness in the teen age group and to appeal to family peak-time viewing.Soccer schools and coaches across the Guangdong province will send their most promising players to the show to participate in the selection process over the 13 episodes of the show. Contestants are eliminated during the course of the show with one of the final episodes being held in Chelsea leading to the winner being granted a place to train at the Chelsea Academy."
Galleon owns the Super Soccer Star show and format. Following the establishment of the first series it is intended to roll-out the format and the brand to other provinces in China and other countries in South East Asia.
So,potential viewing figures (Obv.just potential) for the first SSS were 13 x 50M=650 million
So,GON said they intended to roll out this format to other areas and true to their word,June 2008:
Syndication of Super Soccer Star in Shanghai region
Shanghai Sports Channel is expected to air the series later in the year. This channel reaches 11 million homes in the Shanghai region, with key programming including the English Premier League, Spanish Primera division and UEFA Champions League.
Super Soccer Star is the first of Galleon's multi-platform family entertainment shows to be launched by its Chinese operation Phoenix,a provider of interactive entertainment services to broadcasters in China and South East Asia, which was acquired by Galleon in October 2007.Phoenix has used the Super Soccer Star format to further develop its multi-platform entertainment model with a suite of new product offerings and mechanisms for both mobile and online activity.
The early success of the show in Guangdong has also instigated discussions for further series of Super Soccer Star in China with satellite broadcasters as well as a new series from Galleon's Super Sports Star franchise, focusing on a new sport. Phoenix is also in discussions with potential partners in Indonesia,Vietnam,Thailand, India and Middle East and is in final negotiations of a co-production agreement for Super Soccer Star in Malaysia with a leading terrestrial broadcaster.
So,potential viewing figures (Obv.just potential) for the Shanghai SSS for say 13 episodes is 13 x 11M=143 million
From June 2008 Interims:
Entertainment
Our first multiplatform entertainment property Super Soccer Star,an interactive family orientated football talent show, was launched in April with co-producers Guangdong Sports Channel and Chelsea Football Club. The show has been a huge success and is one of the broadcaster's top 5 rated shows. This has led to the show being syndicated by the Shanghai Sports Channel, which will take it to another 11 million viewers. We are in discussions with other national satellite broadcasters for a second series in China. We are also in final negotiations for a series in Malaysia and there are discussions underway in Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia.

Going back to April 2008 and the AGM and this splendiferous statement:
"We are delighted to inform the market that the positive trends outlined in our
annual report have continued into the current year resulting in an encouraging
half year for the Company. Revenues for the half year 2007/2008 will exceed that
of the previous full year."
I'm tempted to C&P the whole of the AGM announcement but will just post link at bop.
Other main bits from AGM:
"Currently we provide interactive services to 5 broadcasters and we aim for this
to be at least 10 broadcasters by the end of the year."
And funnily enough there is space for two more, how good is that?
Edit-there may be 10 or more already and not added as yet but too late to count...
Edit Edit-not reached 10 yet, just looking into Vizrt from the link below (9/9/08)

Partnership with RDF Media
Having validated the pipeline and demonstrated the flexibility of our business model we have sought access to a library of entertainment content and production expertise that we can exploit within China and SEA.To this end we are delighted to announce that Galleon has entered into an agreement to work with RDF Media to co-produce a select number of shows with leading broadcasters in China leveraging the best of RDF creative content and Galleon's business model and expertise in executing these shows in the territory.

'It is evident that we are steadily executing our business model in the emerging markets, particularly in China. Each of our divisions has continued to gain momentum and this will continue into the second half of the year.We are excited by the opportunities that we see ahead of us.'
Link at bop instead of C&P the whole 'A'

"In addition to entertainment content deals Phoenix continues to provide interactive TV services for broadcasters in China and South East Asia.Recently it signed agreements with Malaysian TV stations, Metropolitan TV Sdn Bhd and CH-9 Media Sdn Bhd,to supply its multiplatform interactive system as part of a multi-year service agreement to provide SMS gateway, interactive advertising and SMS campaign management. If we stay with the Interim Results (June 2008),link above and look at Croco, the savior of GON through the 'ard times!
Croco Worldwide
Croco Worldwide is our global toy division, focusing on designing and manufacturing innovative bespoke in-pack premiums for the global FMCG companies. The division continues to grow in terms of volume, value and also geographical reach. Our relationship with Pepsico is expanding well beyond Europe and our presence in Latin America has been bolstered by the successful test of our product IP Blasterz in a promotion in Mexico.
Our focus for the remaining months will be to secure regular business from this region and to expand our sales and distribution into Asia. Greater visibility of business and stronger relationships allows us to be more strategic about our investment in product IP and also manufacturing technology, all of which provide significant barriers to entry for any competitors.

Moving away from Croco which is a shame but they will crop up again relating to China/SEA and I am sure of that!
July 2008 sees GON/Phoeinx gaining further ground with their 'Interactive' content:
Agreement with Hunan Television in China
"Galleon Holdings plc (AIM: GON), an AIM listed entertainment media company focused on the emerging markets,is pleased to announce that it has secured a contract with Hunan Television ('HNTV') to develop and facilitate interactivity for arange of programmes to be broadcast on its Entertainment Channel.
Under the terms of the agreement, Galleon's Chinese operation, Phoenix, a provider of interactive entertainment services to broadcasters in China and South East Asia, will work with HNTV to develop interactive game play, functionality and content applications for seven shows to be broadcast on the Entertainment Channel over the coming year.Galleon will also be responsible for the billing and fulfilment of all mobile or telephone based interactive activity, which is enabled by its acquisition of Yunbo,a mobile service provider in China,in February 2008. Revenue will be earned on a profit share basis.
HNTV is one of China's leading provincial broadcasters with an audience reach of 67 million. It has a reputation for delivering cutting edge entertainment formats to the China market.
Commenting on the syndication, CEO of Galleon Holdings, Stephen Green said:
'We are delighted to be working at such a strategic level with another leading broadcaster in China. This is a testament to the expertise of the Phoenix team and its strong relationships with broadcasters in the country. The combined audience of these seven shows presents us with a significant opportunity to generate revenues through interactive channels and applications.'
So,that's seven shows of say 13 episodes with an audience reach of 67 million......this is where I get confused with numbers, they get too big! :-)
If we say 13 x 67=871 million for one show
So,potential viewing figures (Obv.just potential) for the seven shows equates go 6097 million--lolloping lolz

August 2008 sees another China TV deal:
Agreement with MMTV in China
Galleon Holdings plc (AIM: GON), an AIM listed entertainment media company focused on the emerging markets, is pleased to announce that it has signed an agreement with Chinese National digital TV broadcaster,MMTV, to co-produce a series of Galleon's Play Along Gameshows ('PAGS').

Asia, will work with MMTV to produce a range of highly interactive programmes or PAGS,which will include a dating show,a call-in chat show and a psychology show. These shows are expected to launch in September.Revenue will be earned on a revenue share basis.
In addition to co-producing these shows,Galleon has secured an exclusive contract

Commenting on the latest agreement in China, CEO of Galleon Holdings, Stephen Green said:

Notes to Editors:
Galleon Holdings plc creates and distributes multi-platform branded entertainment properties focused on the emerging markets, in particular China and South East Asia. The entertainment properties are designed to establish a direct, interactive relationship with the viewer.
Television in China reaches approximately 98% of the population of 1.3 billion. Mobile phone penetration is also high, with over 450 million subscribers and with over 300 million people online, China is now the largest online market in the world. Huge TV audiences and growing interactive platform access presents a substantial opportunity for Galleon to benefit from the popularity and demand for interactive entertainment and game shows. China is forecast to become the world's fifth largest advertising market.
In October 2007 Galleon acquired Phoenix, a Hong Kong based media solutions company, which specialises in the provision of interactive broadcast television services that enable broadcasters in China and South East Asia to provide interactive entertainment for audiences to access through TV, online and mobile.
In February 2008 Galleon acquired Yunbo, a mobile service provider in China, strengthening the Company's ability to provide Chinese broadcasters with a complete media solution for multiplatform entertainment. Galleon now has total control over the interactive content, its delivery to the consumer, data capture and the billing process.
Galleon develops entertainment formats for children, families and young adults. These include:
Super Soccer Star - an interactive family orientated football talent show. Produced in association with Chelsea Football Club. The first series, currently broadcasting in Gungdong province, China, has achieved top five show status.
The Limit - prime-time family variety game show. To be launched in Hunan province, China later this year.
Skunk Fu! - a comedy action animated TV show for kids aged 6-11.
Apollo's Pad - an interactive online animated sitcom targeting 16-24 year olds.
