FTSE + FTSE 250 - consider trading (FTSE)

cynic - 20 Oct 2007 12:12

rather than pick out individual stocks to trade, it can often be worthwhile to trade the indices themselves, especially in times of high volatility.

for those so inclined, i attach below charts for FTSE and FTSE 250, though one might equally be tempted to trade Dow or S&P, which is significantly broader in its coverage, or even NASDAQ

for ease of reading, i have attached 1 year and 3 month charts in each instance

skinny - 12 Sep 2013 09:52 - 12920 of 21973

Unfortunately not - I had it on my list but......

Shortie - 12 Sep 2013 09:55 - 12921 of 21973

Yeah I know, APPL is a monster, get it wrong and it can quickly cost you dearly... Its one of my favourite trades though as I've made a nice bundle trading it.

skinny - 12 Sep 2013 09:57 - 12922 of 21973

The annoying thing is that it was probably one of the most obvious trades recently - well done if you were short.

Shortie - 12 Sep 2013 10:10 - 12923 of 21973

Unfortunatly I wasn't, not had a position in AAPL for a few weeks now. Facebook is at a high I read so might have to investigate a short play there.

skinny - 12 Sep 2013 10:20 - 12924 of 21973

Post 12918 off 50 points since posting!

Shortie - 12 Sep 2013 10:26 - 12925 of 21973

Shortie - 12 Sep 2013 10:33 - 12926 of 21973

Just looks overbougt to me, fall back to 3940 looks in order. Not a sector I tend to trade through.

cynic - 12 Sep 2013 10:41 - 12927 of 21973

was thinking of taking profits here anyway, and your latest comments convinced me, so banked a very useful profit - many thanks

Shortie - 12 Sep 2013 11:18 - 12928 of 21973

Cynic, well done on your profit.

cynic - 12 Sep 2013 11:20 - 12929 of 21973

i confess i find it strange that NMX 3720 is misbehaving so badly, so i guess i'll just grit my teeth and hang on in there

cynic - 12 Sep 2013 11:38 - 12930 of 21973

was tempted to try the falling knife trick and could easily have bought at about 10080, but dither dither and easily missed the boat :-)

Shortie - 12 Sep 2013 11:48 - 12931 of 21973

Cynic, the eight stocks in the FTSE 350 Household Goods sector [NMX3720] are-

Barratt Developments [BDEV] Persimmon [PSN] Bellway [BWY] Reckitt Benckiser Group [RB.] Berkeley Group Holdings (The) [BKG] Redrow [RDW] Bovis Homes Group [BVS] Taylor Wimpey [TW.].

I assume your expecting a rally in these shares to think that the sector will climb further??

skinny - 12 Sep 2013 11:54 - 12932 of 21973

Shortie - there are more than 8 stocks.

ABBY, AGA, AIEA,BDEV, BWY, BKG, BVS,CHH, CFX,CRST,HVE,HEAD,JLH,MCB,PSN,PMP,RB.,RDW,SNCL,TW.,VCP,WGB

cynic - 12 Sep 2013 11:57 - 12933 of 21973

something like that :-)
i think the housing market has a lot of puff in it, albeit or indeed because it's starting from a horrible place, and that is also the feedback i get from a couple of estate agents i talk to

Shortie - 12 Sep 2013 12:07 - 12934 of 21973

I stand corrected, is this http://www.lse.co.uk/sector-constituents.asp?sector=3720&sectorname=household_goods_&_home_construction the full list?

Shortie - 13 Sep 2013 10:10 - 12935 of 21973

skinny - 13 Sep 2013 10:11 - 12936 of 21973
