Got a problem with networking.
I have broadband using a Linksys ADSL Wireless Gateway to connect Main PC, Secondary PC (both via ethernet) and Laptop via Wireless link.
Both PC's and the Laptop can connect to the internet, but can only get the PC's to network together.
Not sure how to get the laptop working on the network although it was working up until a couple of weeks ago.
What do you I need to check - settings etc.
Thanks

I am having problems getting my Norton antivirus to auto protect. When I try to enable it, it comes up with a message saying an error has occured in the script on this page. I have the latest version of Norton updated automatically and no virus(s) have been detacted when I do a manual virus scan. The message includes a URL res://:\progra~\norton~1\navui.dll/navstats.htm. Any ideas how I can enable autoprotect? It sometimes works but since the last update ofthe Norton antivirus it refuses to auto protect. Thanks in advance, HerbieS

First thing I would try is a complete unistall of Norton and then a reload.

Thanks Croc, loaded Norton 2004 antivirus from the site and scanned. Despite having automatic updates and frequent scans from Norton antivirus 2002 previously I was surprised to find over 200 files at high risk and around 300 others at risk. Norton 2004 appears to have removed them all.

RogerD or anybody else with a minute.
Last weeks fast movements in the market caused me some technical issues. I.E. since only running one laptop cannot get across to broker sites and sb site quick enough to trade and cannot see market when in broker sites or sb site.
My main question is how do you keep two or more windows active.
I know "Terminal" can achieve this but could somebody tell me how traderPC with two or three screens keeps active windows on different screens.
RogerD gave me some advice but it raised a question in that you can access a new window but it is only that which is active - if I go into my Hoodless Brennan site and login and then switch back say to Mam streaming stockwatch without logging off there is a possibility of being locked out. Certainly this has happened to me if I switch sites without logging off.
Not a tech buff so please bear with me and probably most here are aware that I live in the wilds of Scotland and cannot access info easily or ask anybody easily. Thanks

maddoctor, how much memory do you have in your laptop? At least 256Mb these days for having lots of windows and effortlessly switching between them. If there is a delay between switching windows and you hear the disk drive chattering then you are definitely short of memory.

Kayak , no probs with memory its this "active window" problem as described above.

Not sure exactly what you mean, but to create additional IE windows either type ctrl-N (which creates a copy of the current IE window) or click on the IE icon again (which creates a new instance, so you'll have to log in again). The former method is more convenient and efficient in memory, but also means that if one window crashes the others will too, whereas the latter method doesn't suffer from that. After you have more than one window, you can either switch between windows by using Alt-Tab, or you can fit more than one window onto a screen by dragging the edges or the corners of each window inwards to make it smaller and then moving it by dragging the title bar around the screen.

Kayak , thanks for your reply. Trying to make myself clear but not succeeding it seems. For instance I am watching live streaming stockwatch and want to switch immediately to my broker but at the logged in window and back again or on screen want live prices from stockwatch whilst meantime getting a broker quote , this requires two active windows. Switching as I understand it makes the switched window active and the one I switch from inactive. As I said above this may cause me to be locked out of hoodless brennan.Hope this is clearer.

Have you tried the stuff in post 1446, maddoctor?

yep , understand can get that from file - asking for advice before I try moving windows from a logged in situation on hoodless brennan since if you get locked out you have to damn well ring them up to get unlocked and with open positions this could be scary

Generally speaking you can run independent windows without problems, provided you keep them open of course. "Active" is a bit of a misnomer really, all the windows you have open will be active in the sense that they will be alive and updating, whether visible on the screen or not. The window that is in the foreground is called active, which just means that it is where your keyboard input and mouse clicks will go. If you have more than one window displayed, click somewhere on it to bring it to the foreground (the title bar will change colour), or use Alt-Tab, or the task buttons at the bottom of the screen.
I did use HB briefly over a year ago and I remember that the problem was that if your window crashed then it would still think you were logged on until its timeout expired 10-15 minutes later, preventing you from logging in again until that happened.
Suggest you get practice in creating additional windows while the market is closed so you'll have confidence for Monday!

kayak , appreciate your assistance . If I try it now and get locked out I will have to wait until tomorrow to get back in again I think , re ringing. Last time it happened I don't recall a timeout and when I rang they never mentioned it - they went to my account and unlocked it. Anyway will probably try tomorrow when data steaming to PC and see what happens. Thanks again

Not sure this is the right thread...but it probably has to do with things, which might slow your machine down and also general security
I have been looking at sites which do the following kind of thing, namely allow you to see all of your bank accounts, etc, at one hit.
The link is from
moneysupermarket.com
They say:
Get access to all your on-line accounts on one page with one password.
See how much you can save as your accounts are compared with products from the whole of the market.
All your security details are encrypted and stored on your local PC.
(I noticed they don't say what level of encryption, eg, 128 bit)
Go here to the section marked 'View my Accounts', click on it and then click on 'View Demo'

Doc, I use a similar method of accessing all my accounts but mine of from Egg who provide it to their customers. I understand that the banks (probably with the exception or Egg) do not like this sort of thing even though all the security data is local. My view is that they need to sort out their act before they complain as they have a ridiculous number of different login methods and this must lead to confusion. In the end I think we will end up with 2 level authentication probably with a smartcard or fingerprint reader but until we get that I will continue to use this sort of product.
By the way the security looks good, this is from moneysupermarkets FAQ security help page :-
System Login
Your View My Accounts username and password are used to encrypt your data using Triple DES technology based on a 192 bit key length. It is, therefore very important that you do not forget your username or password because if you do you will have to re-enter each of your account passwords.
Account Numbers and Passwords
All the login details for your accounts are stored securely on your computer and are never passed to the View My Accounts servers. This stored data is encrypted using Triple DES technology, which encrypts using your password for the View My Accounts service. Your login information is only held in your computer memory whilst it is required. The data stored on your machine cannot be viewed by any other system, including the View My Accounts servers.

I am having trouble with CDRW disk formatting. I'm using Memorex 700mB (8x-12x it says on the label). But when I format the disk I end up with less than 600mB.
I am using UDF 1.50 File system.
Thanks

psued11, regardless of your windows version if you can access the laptop BIOS you MAY be able to configure an auto startup time (my Dell desktops all alone this).
Hope this helps.
