I have been looking at sites which do the following kind of thing, namely allow you to see all of your bank accounts, etc, at one hit.

They say:

All your security details are encrypted and stored on your local PC.

(I noticed they don't say what level of encryption, eg, 128 bit)

Doc, I use a similar method of accessing all my accounts but mine of from Egg who provide it to their customers. I understand that the banks (probably with the exception or Egg) do not like this sort of thing even though all the security data is local. My view is that they need to sort out their act before they complain as they have a ridiculous number of different login methods and this must lead to confusion. In the end I think we will end up with 2 level authentication probably with a smartcard or fingerprint reader but until we get that I will continue to use this sort of product.

Your View My Accounts username and password are used to encrypt your data using Triple DES technology based on a 192 bit key length. It is, therefore very important that you do not forget your username or password because if you do you will have to re-enter each of your account passwords.

All the login details for your accounts are stored securely on your computer and are never passed to the View My Accounts servers. This stored data is encrypted using Triple DES technology, which encrypts using your password for the View My Accounts service. Your login information is only held in your computer memory whilst it is required. The data stored on your machine cannot be viewed by any other system, including the View My Accounts servers.

I am having trouble with CDRW disk formatting. I'm using Memorex 700mB (8x-12x it says on the label). But when I format the disk I end up with less than 600mB.
I am using UDF 1.50 File system.

psued11, regardless of your windows version if you can access the laptop BIOS you MAY be able to configure an auto startup time (my Dell desktops all alone this).

thanks, it's a dell laptop. I might be able to fathom it with that pointer. You have your setup automated ?

psued, may not be the same for your laptop but on one of my pcs, hit f2 as it starts to boot up, this give you access to the bios setup, once there look for an 'auto power on' function and simply set the time to whatever you what.

Probably the drive. Check its cables are well connected and that the parameters in the BIOS look correct before replacing it though.

Can anyone help? My Dell laptop has suddenly become difficult to connect to the net - frequently says no dial tone detected, but not always; also sometimes disconnects after a few minutes online (dial-up connection) - using the built in modem.

Happens at different locations and using different isp's, same isp connections on my desktop are fine so it has to be something to do with the machine. Do I

a) buy an external modem
b) replace the internal modem
c) do something else?!

Seymour, first I would try a different modem lead.

re post 1459 forgot to say that assuming it's a desktop PC, you probably have 2 IDE ports, so try to plug the disk drive into the other IDE port and a different power cable too to check whether it's the drive, power supply, or motherboard that is broken.

SC - couple of things. There are at least two different wiring patterns on modem leads, don't assume they're interchangeable. Internal modems (more accurately "Winmodems") provided with PCs often don't use the standard UK pattern. I've had one bundled by a(n otherwise) reputable supplier that wasn't even BABT approved.

Secondly, don't spend too long on this - good external modems are close to free nowadays - eg http://www.dabs.com/uk/productView.htm?quicklinx=2SZC

Thanks folks, Troll, I can't be bothered to spend too much time on it as you rightly suggest; Neil, thanks for the offer, trouble is I want it yesterday, have to go to PC world for something now anyway so might just get one - I can't access my am prices unless I use someone else's machine, or my work ones which don't have enough memory to run Marketmaker.

Now connected using my laptop and a nice little usb modem by sitecom. Nice thing was it was the smallest one on display, the only one they had, and it was a returned model so had 10% discount. This Dell laptop is slowly but surely falling to bits. Mind you it's had some hammer!
