FTSE + FTSE 250 - consider trading (FTSE)

cynic - 20 Oct 2007 12:12

rather than pick out individual stocks to trade, it can often be worthwhile to trade the indices themselves, especially in times of high volatility.

for those so inclined, i attach below charts for FTSE and FTSE 250, though one might equally be tempted to trade Dow or S&P, which is significantly broader in its coverage, or even NASDAQ

for ease of reading, i have attached 1 year and 3 month charts in each instance

cynic - 21 Mar 2014 15:56 - 14938 of 21973

as with a tv, just use the mute button!

=============

meanwhile, and as i think i commented the other day, the dow ought to be tumbling, but steadfastly refuses to do so, or at least only for a day or two
the "break down" number was 16198, and i guess it's still the same, but every time the index dips down through that, it recovers smartly
the question then arises as to whether 16525 or thereabouts will prove to be the next upwards hurdle

i've traded long in/out a few times over the last few days and managed to recoup some earlier losses, but i'll try to discipline myself to be out and stay out once (if?) the index gets close to 16500, or at least until the next direction is established

Cheers Rocky, its a map of the world now, still and silent.... 6569 doubled down

HARRYCAT - 21 Mar 2014 16:26 - 14940 of 21973

The manage add-ons route doesn't work!!! :o( (In Chrome)
Easiest to just mute the ad by hovering cursor over the frame and clicking the speaker icon.

skinny - 21 Mar 2014 16:27 - 14941 of 21973

I don't see it - not sure exactly why.

Shortie - 21 Mar 2014 16:30 - 14942 of 21973

Rockys fix worked on my explorer, it now looks like this.. Trust me Skinny, your not missing out on anything...

HARRYCAT - 21 Mar 2014 16:30 - 14943 of 21973

It's located to the right of the 'Add a post to this thread' box, under the 'Page 1 - 2 - 3 etc links. Sadly it doesn't remember the mute command if you change pages!

skinny - 21 Mar 2014 16:31 - 14944 of 21973

Harry - I'm not complaining - just closed a very quick short +10.

cynic - 21 Mar 2014 16:31 - 14945 of 21973

i'm sure it's a very silly Q, but why don't you just mute via the master volume control on your machine?
surely your don't need sound most of the day

jimmy b - 21 Mar 2014 16:32 - 14946 of 21973

You would think MAM would do something about it put the pop up on the home page ,what idiot put video on every page ???

Shortie - 21 Mar 2014 16:32 - 14947 of 21973

Rockys fix works on all threads, just checked... FTSE closed... ker-ching

HARRYCAT - 21 Mar 2014 16:36 - 14948 of 21973

You're right Cynic, that is the final solution which does work, but it's a matter of principle. The ad is annoying and they seem to be intent on finding ever more intrusive ways of pumping advertising at us. I suppose it wouldn't be so bad if it just plays once, but over & over & over &.................

Shortie - 21 Mar 2014 16:39 - 14949 of 21973

I like it still and quiet, no picture is the best as its still annoying.. Maybe topless women would have been a better ad for this thread..!

cynic - 21 Mar 2014 16:39 - 14950 of 21973

it is not a requirement that they make a noise either :-)

skinny - 21 Mar 2014 16:41 - 14951 of 21973

I like a bit of Ride of the Valkyries for trading the FTSE :-)

or for Shortie

HARRYCAT - 21 Mar 2014 16:43 - 14952 of 21973

Yeah, well all you get at the moment is some daft b*gger trying to sell you Cillit Bang or similar cr*p!

Rocky - 21 Mar 2014 16:48 - 14953 of 21973

Those are a nice couple of 'add-ons' worth having!

jimmy b - 21 Mar 2014 18:18 - 14954 of 21973

What no one has mentioned is if your using mobile internet it uses about 5 times the GB , i am at the moment using mobile ,i use about 150GB per day ,today i have used just over 500GB ,if i go to a site i can switch off the video but these are on every page and you can't switch them off ,,,,, i will be off MAM until this advertising has been turned off ,there is no need for a video to be played on every page ,no other site i have ever been on has had a new video on every page .
The usage is worse than watching a youtube video as you flick between pages .
Unfortunately i have no option but to use mobile broadband at the moment.

Rocky - 21 Mar 2014 18:36 - 14955 of 21973

jimmy, the box to the right has now reverted to playing just silent animations rather than full video. If it stays like that, it should use a lot less bandwidth. Let's hope MAM have got the message. ....Now I must go out and buy some Cillit Bang!

Rocky - 22 Mar 2014 03:46 - 14956 of 21973

OK, did some research into this and found the following solution. For IE, go to 'Tools' - 'Manage add-ons' - click 'Tracking Protection' then in the pane below click 'Get a Tracking Protection list online' In the page that opens I selected the second entry down 'EasyPrivacy' by clicking the 'Add' button next to it. Make sure it it then enabled in the 'Manage Add-ons' entry list.
That will zap the add box completely and peace and quiet will resume.
Hope this helps. I imagine a similar fix can be used for google Chrome. If I get time I'll look into it.

I did a bit of research for 'Google Chrome' users and came up with this:
In Chrome to the right of the address bar click the 'Customize' button then select the 'Settings' option then click on 'Extensions' on the left side. - Click 'Get more extensions' There is an app called 'Adblock Plus' which claims to zap annoying ads. Presumably if you install that it will do a similar job. I don't use Chrome so haven't tried it myself. Hope this helps.

skinny - 22 Mar 2014 06:07 - 14957 of 21973

Rocky - just for info, I use Chrome and don't have that extension installed.

I don't get the ad that is so annoying people.

I do get this on IE, so I guess its something else blocking it in Chrome.
